Making me eat crow, he’s coming along faster than I expected after being promoted to the top six

.
. The problem is that our fans don’t have patience. I don’t think they realize how much covid effected a lot of young players development. Plus unlike other teams the rangers had a pretty much set top 6 in his rookie year so now he is getting the opportunity in his second year and showing fans that a tiny bit of patience will lead to gratification

Crazy what happens when you put your 1st overall in a position to succeed and play him a lot with good players. Gallant should've never taken him off the top line at the start of the season because they were good then too. The main difference is that they stopped shooting 4% as a line and started getting bounces to go their way.

It's still funny how the kid can't manage to buy an assist at 5v5 or on the powerplay, but they'll come if. he keeps playing at this pace

Laf right now looks like he’s starting to take a little more control

he still occasionally makes the boneheaded play but he’s 20. I’m excited for the next few years as he continues to grow
He finally has chemistry with his line. Being stuck on the third line never helped. I said since day 1, he needed to be developed on the first line since the jump and let him grow through his pains. Now we're seeing what he's capable of.

Laf is currently 4th in EV points amongst 2020 draftees despite only really getting going in the last month or so. The three guys ahead of him (Lundell, Raymond + Mercer) have all averaged anywhere from 2-5 min more ice time per game. Overall, given that he was the #1 pick you'd expect him to be at the top but I think he'll be there soon enough.

He's looking better and that's good, but I'm not going to shower him with praise because he makes a passing play and/or gets a secondary assist and/or does things that you would expect from any NHL'r (from susperstar to bottom barrel). At least his game is headed in the right direction, but still below my expectations for a #1.

i dont understand this - he was clearly in over his head to start the year. he didnt want the puck, he was forcing pucks back and basically out of the play most of the time. moving him to the 3rd line put him in a position where he felt more ownership of making things happen. you could see he really started moving his feet and holding the puck. sure gauthier and chytil robbed him of probably 10 assists but he really was able to build some confidence on the puck. i would concede he was probably ready to get bumped into this spot 10 games or so earlier than he was - and kakko was really not much of a factor there but gallant was probably hesitant to move him to rw after the early experiment being a flop. besides it being good for him and preparing him to move back to the top line as a confident player on the puck and adding value to the line, its not the end of the world he played 25 games or whatever on the 3rd line as a 20 year old. i do think its time to move him onto the top pp for strome but thats not gonna happen with the way the pp is clippin even though strome adds nothing to it. next year...

Do we use buzz phrases like "on pace" to cherry pick and justify a player's overall weak performance with spurts of okay performance for 12% of the season to players performing at said pace for the entirety of the season?

It reminds me of all the "on pace" main board posts about such and such player on pace for such and such, and it ages well because that player then suddenly stops performing at said pace. Lol.

He's 20 and his career spans 110 games. Of course if we're looking for trends, we're going to need to look at smaller samples.

Looking at what he has done over the last 5, 10, 20 games and comparing it to the performances of notable players is just to provide context for his improved play. You're using subjective terms like "weak" and "okay" and other people are using quantifiable items.

This is living proof that the "HE'S GOTTA EARN IT APPROACH!" is flawed when you're talking about high draft pick, high potential players like Lafreniere.

Lafreniere was only given this opportunity out of sheer necessity. Gallant's hand was forced into doing two things he never would have done otherwise:

1. Shift Lafreniere from his natural position to RW;
2. Give Lafreniere big minutes with top players but also against top competition.

Neither of these things happen if Gallant had literally any other viable option available.

We need to start making smart decisions not just out of necessity and desperation but because they are smart decisions.

Kakko should be getting 18+ minutes a night when he comes back and that should continue indefinitely, regardless of results. These kids are the future. They are more important than any individual game result. Stop with this Hunt nonsense. If Panarin and Strome have a problem with it then bash their heads together like Moe and tell them to deal with it.

The nonsense is thinking how players play should not have any reflection on their playing time and role. Both Laffy and Kakko have been given a lot of quality ice time. Some other players would have been sent down with their lack of production. Our franchise has been very patient with them. You dont just throw them in the deep end of the pool and watch them drown. You let them learn how to swim. Both guys have played top 6 minutes before they earned them. I'm optimistic and Laf and Kakko but lets not get ahead of ourselves. If Kakko had another name people would be pulling their hair out complaining that he is dragging down our second line. He is a better option than Hunt but lets not pretend that he has produced like a top 6 forward.

Lol. I'm just being real man. Like I said before that last post. I'm glad Laf has been producing as of late and I hope he continues, but I have no delusions about his overall productivity nor am I going to revert to the second coming of jesus excitement like I was when we drafted him. My own little cent among the cents here. :)

What would Laf need to do between now to the end of the post season run to change the Rangers priorities and lock him up to a long term extension? Is it even possible for the Rangers to give him a contract and have a 2nd line center for the breadline?

I mean, I get it. You don't think his overall play in the season has been weak and/or okay? Because just like you can quantify his last 10 games, why can't I quantify his first 10? Or next 10? Or the next? Why is it quantifiable for you and not for me? Because you don't like me being negative about his production? Because I can definitely quantify some shit stretches and stats for Laf, just like you an quantify stretches where he's produced.
