He made several pure playmaking passes leading to high danger scoring chances.

That was something I was looking for in his game as an indication that he was really figuring out the flow, speed and timing at the NHL level.

Then he rips off and finishes that beauty of a one timer, against a goalie who was saving everything in sight.

This is the player everyone touted at #1.

I was at the game last night. Laf was the best skater on the ice. Every play he was working hard forechecking and setting up plays. There was an energy flowing from him that was excited, poised, and determined. I expect things will only improve from here.

If he can improve his skating I don't see why he can't be a PPG+ player.

He was driving play all night. Should bode well for the future. Could become our Huberdeau after all.

I think thats the most important thing. We saw him lead out there and make an impact as a play driver.

It was also one of the first times I saw defenders start to back in when he rushed with the puck. He had more space to operate and make plays, but he also was very decisive and quicker.

Its not that he's skating faster, he's is skating with more purpose. It's subtle, but its pretty amazing the difference it makes in making space for yourself to make a play.

Yea the goal was nice but that chance Gauthier almost converted on that was set up by Laf was just as important.

Now I want Kakko to come back ASAP and prove his doubters wrong too.

And yea he was moving with a plan. Some skating improvement would still do him a lot of good.

He had a couple others too, feeding Kreider etc. Looked like a different player. Amazing what confidence can do.

As far as Kakko goes - I already saw him make that leap. Whatever ailment he had really messed with his game. For a while he was one of the Rangers best forwards but not getting any points. Im really hoping he can get back to that level this season.

That 1T would look sick in the bumper spot on PP1 and he has the skill for deft touch passes in that position. With how much teams cheat Mika/Bread they don't take advantage of the bumper because Strome can't 1T.

Laf is making me eat my words from the break.

I have to admit that, given the 5v5 struggles and running into two straight Hasek impersonators, even though the stat line isn’t there, I am finally seeing those coveted “flashes” and rather consistently at that. He looks SO much better. He has made at least a half dozen, maybe a dozen really stellar passes the past handful of games and could easily have 4+ assists if we were converting on even half of them. Some of them have been subtle, sneaky, creative passes reminiscent of the way Fox finds lanes and makes feeds you don’t expect. I will be ecstatic if he keeps playing this way because it WILL translate. And he’s been managing to get on the board despite the team offense struggling. He’s shooting a bit more. And he’s winning some puck battles and definitely engaging in tons more puck battles. Really loving Laf’s game recently.

Him and Mika are starting to develop a nice chemistry. They're getting comfortable with each other and it's really starting to click. Lafreniere is also noticeably more confident now and he's consistently moving his feet and with that confidence he's starting to flash his skill and actually look like the dynamic player we expected. It's always been about him finding that confidence and really working up to that consistency where he's moving his feet non stop and he's not hesitating and deferring but instead dictating pace and trying to make plays, which comes with the confidence. It's been slower than we would've liked but his progress is undeniable.

I just hope the recent struggles overall don't lead Gallant to mix up all the lines because the Kreider-Mika-Laf line needs to stay together.

Lafreniere is finally putting it together. I REALLY hope Gallant leaves him with Kreider and Mika.

Kreider-Mika-Lafreniere
Panarin-Strome-Kakko

Should be the top 6 going into the playoffs and then you try and make some acquisitions for the 3rd line.
Considering how well Kakko played with Strome and Panarin earlier this season, and now Laf coming on lately with Mika and Kreider really does balance out that top 6. We just might have a damn good top 6 taking shape here once Kakko is back. I also hope we can get a young 3c to further balance out the depth, shift Chytil to wing on the third line and just push everyone else down.

It’s ridiculous that this hasn’t been tried at this point. And yes, the PP is already good, I get it. But it can be better, and developing and increasing the confidence of this team’s highest ever draft pick is very important.

Even 4 on 4. Put him alongside Mika or Bread. Much more dynamic.

I think it's fine to try him there given where the team is in the standings right now. If it doesn't work you can always go back. But having a lefty in the bumper doesn't really work with the construction of the powerplay. He won't really be able to one time passes coming from Panarin on the right side since they are coming from across his body and Mika in the left circle is the shooter on the unit off of Fox passes.

There's a set play where Kreider or Zibs sets up the bumper when the rotate by the goal line.

I'd rather it be Laffy than Strome getting that touch.

Any way around it?
