I will never trade a talent like Kirby Dach for "maybe" win the lottery day. Habs can win Bedard even if they are not in bottom 3. Trade a talent like Dach at 21 years old by a young team like Chicago, that's stupid. DeBrincat ok I understand that, but Dach?

He is no Bedard, but he is going to be a really really good hockey player, PPG potential is 100% there with his talent.

The while point is that it's not just a chance at Bedard. It's multiple years at the bottom. That's how the Pens - and the Hawks - built their cup winners. (Kane, Toews, Seabrook, etc..)
You do not trade away young talent like dach and debrincat to help you finish low. You can still finish bottom 3 with those guys in the lineup. Ice an echl level defense. Trade away goalies if they're posting over an .890%

If they were 27,28, sure. But trading away 21 and 24 year olds is just tanking and I hope they end up like Arizona or Buffalo before the emergence of dahlin and Thompson

Purposefully making your team as bad as possible is not a recipe for success.

And don't worry, we will be bad for longer than most posters expect as well.

Draft results vary a lot and are not always super impactful, nor always busts.

Those same ranks for the last six years 2017 to 2022 would yield:
Timothy Liljegren
Jesperi Kotkaniemi
Dylan Cozens
Alexis Lafreniere
Mason McTavish
Conor Geekie

That's pretty meh.
For a tank to be successful, you definitely have to draft well. Substitute Brady Tkachuk for KK and those look a lot better.

But yeah, the draft years meant the Oilers had to tank extra long until they finally got McDavid and Draisaitl. Only an idiot GM couldn't win with those two. We'll see what happens with Buffalo. I'm glad stage Thompson and at least Tuch are working out. Otherwise they would have gotten nothing for Eichel and O'Reilly.

Btw, with the shrewd moves HuGo are making, like Romanov for Dach, unprotected 2023 pick for Chiarot, and Monahan and 1st for nothing, I don't see this leadership group needing an excruciatingly long rebuild...

I've been thinking will be a bubble team in 24-25. With our window really opening in 25-26 until the end of the decade.

Dach will be 23/24
Suzuki will be 25/26
Cole will be 23/24
Slaf will be 20/21

I have to assume that that is 4 top 6 players, plus potentially Dubois and our pick this year. Then you add in potential players that could still breakthrough, Mesar, Beck, Roy, Farrell along with two/three top picks this year and we're heading in the right direction up front.

Then on D some combination of Guhle, Barron, Xhekaj, Harris, Mailloux, Hutson some combination of them will yield 3 top 4 defenseman. Then you grab one via free agency in 24 and if Monty starts trending well we'll be cooking with Gas.

Leafs in 24-25 may be losing Matthews or Tavares and replacing them with a cap of just matthews
Boston won't have centers anymore
Tampa will have Stamkos at 35, Kucherov at 33, Point at 29, Hedman at 35 yeah they have Vasi and Sergachev as well but they won't have any young guns coming and will need to lean towards FA more and More

Florida, Buffalo and Ottawa will be some variation of competitive
Detroit I feel is in no mans land, especially if they lose Larkin.

That leaves a fourth spot open competing with FLA,BUF,Ott and TOR

No, they did not "have to tank" Tnaking means constructing a roster to lowe o purpose.

Edmonton tried to win. They hired free gents, changed coaches, etc.

They just sucked and got to draft high as a result.

Draft preference is only a PARTIAL compensation for playing poorly.

As I've said before, the diffeence in calibre drafting 5th or 28th, while noticeable, is far, far less than the difference in roster quality between the 5th best team and the 5th worst team.

Playing poorly to get high draft picks is a low-odds choice.

Raphael Diaz for Dale Weise.

Dale Weise + Tomas Flesichmann for Philip Danault + 2nd round pick(Romanov)

Romanov + 98th pick for 2022 1st(Frank Nazar)

2022 1st(Frank Nazar) + 66th for Kirby Dach.
