Romanov is a punishing/ physical defenseman. Good defensively and has a good shot power . Could be better in the offensive zone but I think he has untapped potential.

The young D core and prospects could of been

Ghule/Reinbacher
Romanov/Mailloux
Hutson/Xhekaj

2022-2023 Regular Season

Vs Dach

Big center with skills. Tough to knock off the puck, good speed/abilities while carrying it. can be put it all together and stay healthy ?

One full season since the trade. Some people miss Romanov?

Xhekaj is already better.

Romanov was and is an expendable guy

Loved Romy
Miss Romy

But 6"4 centers like Dach don't grow on trees.. he'd be a Unicorn if he had Matthew's shot and better FO%

Romanovs do grow on trees (and like someone said, Xhekaj has completely replaced him already and is twice his size)

Romanov is a good player and we will only know how good he can be in a few years. I disagree that Xhekaj is as good today, but I kind of agree that he replaced Romanov in an acceptable fashion, at least in the physical department (where he is even more intimidating, despite not being as well rounded as of today).

Dach is just a unique skillset that was lacking on the team and Habs will be so much better because he is there than what Romanov could have done for the team, especially when you consider the depth at LD on the depth chart and prospects.

We may not all have realized it at the time of the trade, mostly because we weren't sure what we were getting with Dach, but this trade was a slam dunk.

Romanov is OK, take a look at the NYI board to see what they think of him, it's not pretty, love the guy but he's a 4 at best , NYI playing him too much fans think he's a bum

Just read the NYI board and can't see how you came to that conclusion. Most love him ( always a few haters ) and say he filled a team need that would not have been available with the draft pick. My read is that they view him as a 3-4 D that will only get better with time and adds that physical element that Dobson does not. Did not see "bum" or equivalent wording mentioned once.

That part of the year ehh?

The fact is that the habs don't need more defensemen. They need forwards. Whether you personally like Romanov or not doesn't change the calculus. With the plethora of D prospects in the pool it's likely one or more of them end up developing into a superior defensemen to Romanov.

It's a no brainer trade. Romanov's contributions to his current club are irrelevant.

Romanov is a fun player to have but he's kind of like Emelin meaning when a game is getting chippy he throws a borderline legal huge hit that really sends the game into chaos, but he won't fight and we had a soft team so it always backfired

With Guhle, Harris, Xhekaj, Trudeau & Norlinder all incoming + having signed Leskinen, as well as having someone like Struble in the pipeline, they also still had Fairbrother, they were deep at LD. So they were able to trade from a position of strength to address a position of need.

The Romanov became obsolete as soon as management deemed Guhle ready for the NHL - and I have a feeling that such move (leveraging a cost-controlled RFA defenseman to fill a position of need) will become a distinctive modus operandi for the Habs' in the years to come considering their promising D pipeline:

Legend: * = Potential keepers / Player = Potential trade asset

Expiring ELCs/RFAs to renew / sell before 2024-2025 : Barron* ; Xhekaj* ; Lindstrom

Expiring UFAs to sell before the end of 2024-2025 : Savard ; Kovacevic

Expiring ELCs/RFAs to renew/sell before 2025-2026 : Guhle* ; Harris* ; Struble ; Trudeau

Expiring UFA (2026) to sell/renew before 2026-2027 : Matheson*

Expiring ELC to renew in 2026-2028 : Reinbacher* ; Hutson*

Expiring ELCs/RFAs to renew/sell within 2026-2028 : Engstrom* ; Mailloux* ; Konyushkov

2027-2028 Prospective Lineup (Notwithstanding future draftees... and the fact that a few amongst Engstrom/Harris/Xhekaj/Barron/Mailloux will be traded in "Romanov-like" trades) :

Guhle (25 yo) / Matheson* (33) - Guhle* / Barron (25) / Mailloux (24) / Engstrom (23)
Hutson (23) - Reinbacher (22)
Engstrom (23) / Harris (28) / Xhekaj (27) - Barron (25) / Mailloux (24) / Harris

Norlinder played an exhibition game in Sweden, Grant McCagg says this means he isnt coming back.
Agree with what you are saying though - we coudl afford to let him go, and he probably got traded with a good value

Regarding Norlinder, McCagg is the only one who said he played an exhibition game in Sweden. He didn't say with what team, though. And no one else, particularly Patrik Bexell has yet to mention this (and he's the reference when it comes to European prospects).

People like Arber because he fights, be honest.
Of course, but he also brings more offense than Romanov does. Good enough skating, good passing, good shot that gets through traffic, physicality, what's not to love?

Needs work on the defensive side, we can all agree on that. But I think he can carve out a nice career, similar to Souray's, maybe.

I agree that Romanov, while being “elite” in physicality (hitting), was redundant to us because we have plenty of quality at LD. Matheson, Ghule,Hutson, Xhekaj, Harris , Engstrom.

It was the right bet to make for Hughes to trade him for an high potential C like Dach. Dach also showed some great attributes at the end of last season.

It would have been nice to keep both , but we had to give to get.

I’m fine with a gamble like this even if it doesn’t pay off. You gotta have a GM that gambles a bit. Especially if he’s dealing away from a position of strength.

So far it’s paying off with still likely more to come.

Trading redundant asset for talent is good. Even if Romanov is good, he's already replaced by some other guy we will also need to trade for another forward to make room for a better defenseman. Now we are progressing.
