My memory must be failing me then, because I remember more talk about how he got “figured out” on the rush coming down the LW, which is how Oates came up with the “brilliant” idea to switch him to RW.

I rewatched all his goals from that year, his wrist looks fine to me.

Anyway there was clearly more to it than just a wrist injury, because that went on for 2 years.
You don't remember any period of time where Ovechkin's thing was basically to shoot a mile wide or dead center and then take his glove off and flex his wrist around a lot? We won't know what it was because he seems to take a lot of pride in showing up and appearing invincible, but he didn't look the same.

Now that you phrase it like that I vaguely remember something of that sort. That was 2011-12 under Hunter right?

It’s hard to say. I think it’s been a thing at least twice outside of little blips on the radar, and I want to say one was a Trotz era thing with a big fat forearm bruise. One was definitely a “dark years” thing though

Thought you guys might get a kick out of this.

I just found the dumbest comment about a hockey player ever on FB (about Ovi):

With the amount of time he's spent on the power play and the number of shots he takes from the left dot. If he didn't break that goal record I'd laugh. Too bad he won't break all time goals, or even be in the top 50 in shooting percentage. Costco of goal scores, bulk shooter.

My response:

Shooting percentage is completely irrelevant, this isn't the NBA. Most big time scorers are volume shooters because no one has a high shooting percentage consistently in the NHL. What a stupid post.

You can tell who doesn’t watch him. The Caps PP has been a tire fire this year and I think he only has three one timer goals. People act like he’s just a PP turret who is useless the rest of the game when he’s actually leading the league in ES points.

Also, in order to be a volume shooter you have to be pretty good at, you know, being able to get your shot off which is not an easy thing to do when teams game plan around stopping you from shooting.

That’s common in the FB or YouTube comment sections. You can tell who doesn’t watch and/or is a Penguins fan

I also think the average FB commenter knows 1 million times less about hockey than the average HF board member.

I think the same guy has been posting that stuff on the mains here. There was somebody this weekend slamming Ovechkin for the amount of shooting he does as if shots on goal is a bad thing. Its the same ole Ov is selfish and Ov is one dimensional crap that has been going on for a decade by the haters.

First things first. In order to be a volume shooter you have to get open for the shot. Both to get the puck and to get the shot thru. Right? So, for a good while now the entire building has known that the Capitals want to get the puck to 8. With the entire opposition guarding against that, he still gets open and gets the shot thru. Its a basic that he is ridiculously good at.

That Backstrom and Carlson get him the puck thru that so often should brighten the spotlight on them too, though it doesnt

My wife isn’t really a poster but she’s a big follower of her favorite football team’s Facebook page and the stuff people say on there is really the stuff of legend. I don’t know how she reads that stuff. Facebook pages are generally the worst place on earth for sports commentary… it’s like the collection of people banned from message boards like HF so they go to Reddit and get banned from there and then they all end up on Facebook.

Im starting to think that's at least Ted Lindsay however scoring race ends.
I don't think there is any chance of Ted Lindsay for Ovechkin. Points just don't tell the full story. There are several more impactful players currently in the NHL. He would have to have a dominant Art Ross run to be even part of the conversation. I just don't see him being on same level as some of the other younger NHL stars we have currently. Nothing wrong with that.

Who currently deserves Lindsey more? The two from Edmonton had very similar seasons so far. Impossible to say who is better players this year. Matthews is tearing it up scoring wise but not much else to write about. Kadri? Dont think he will keep up all season and his reputation is not the best throughout the league. If season ended right now Ovi sweeps all 4 awards.

With how many games are being postponed you can't really just blindly look at the stats. In few months when everyone has about the same games we can start discussing the actual nominees. But even today you should ask yourself is Ovechkin the best player currently in the NHL. When voting will happen, lets say McDavid and OV are tied in points I don't see a world where OV wins and rightfully so. Everyone knows that the current OV is not at the same level as #97. NHLPA voting is different to sportswriters one where narrative has tremendous power.

2 points

1. The teams that have to make up a lot of games will do that in very compressed periods. Thats not an advantage. Lets say there are 5 game 7 nights and a player gets COVID and misses them all? Ov has already had his compressed period. His results are in the bank.

2. If Ov and McDavid are tied you see no way Ov wins? I see it just the opposite. Who is voting for McDavid?

After I wrote this I was just thinking in the kitchen that this just might be the best case scenario for him. I guess there is a chance he could snatch it with this happening. What I'm saying that OV adds very little to the ice outside of his points, which are obviously great and major part of his game. But overall there are better players in the NHL, several of them.

What does Mcdavid bring to the ice besides points that Ovi doesn't bring?
- Ovi has edge in physicality
- Ovi has edge in leadership and experience
- Defense? I would say they are not far from each other, neither one is contending for Selkes.

I bet if both are tied at the end of the season Ovechkin win the Lindsey nearly unanimously. The age gap will play a huge factor regardless who is voting media or players.
