Crazy how he has 9 and 10 more ES points than McDavid and Draisaitl while playing with no one of their caliber and also less ice time at ES, as a 36 year old. He would win the Hart hands down if the season ended now. I’m just curious about how he’s pulling this off and if it’s remotely sustainable.

And just tied the all-time PPG mark. When it's all over, that record will be in the stratosphere.

Jeez. To think he will probably retire as the greatest goalscorer of all time and he will have done all of it only in a Capitals uniform. He also brought the first championship in the team history.

Leonsis should build a statue for this guy haha

His trainer has told me that he’s taken antibolic steroids, Novacaine, Nyquil, Darvon, and some sort of fish paralyzer.

Florida fan passing by. Crazy he's leading the league in points as a 36 year old against prime McDavid and Draisatl

I'm curious, what's different this year than in the past few years? Has he changed his game a bit? or is everything just going right for him (Linemate chemistry, etc)

Whatever the reason, hope he keeps it up!

Ovechkin is doing something unthinkable... I didn't think it was possible to play so cool at the age of 36

To me, he looks like he's letting the game come to him more than over the rest of his career. I know that sounds incredibly cliché, but Ovechkin has always been the type of player that attempted to impose his will and high energy on the game regardless of the situation. He was aggressive and played at a high pace, even when he didn't need to, and at times, even when it was disadvantageous.. As a young player, when he was elite athletically and the hands were quicker, that approach let to absolute dominance.

This year, he's playing more controlled and picking his spots to be high-paced and aggressive more judiciously. He's much more willing to slow the game down. Combine that with the elite hockey sense he's always had, the all-time shot and shooting instincts, and the excellent puck skills, and you get what we're seeing.

Puck handling and control look crisper because he's not always trying to do it at high speed and in tight situations. There's less trying to beat a defender and more trying to avoid defenders beating him. He looks more creative because he's allowing the play around him more time to develop.

TL;DR: He's adjusted to being old.
