Stars fan here, with an Ovi appreciation post. Always appreciated him “from afar,” and then really came to understand during our family’s time in the D.C area (2017-2021) just how truly unique a player he is. Remarkable what he’s doing in general, and then at his age—the guy is in a category all his own.

I’m especially enjoying how he is quieting all those “old boys club” people who were dogging on his game for years, instead of just appreciating it for what it is.

I’m rooting for him to break Gretzky’s record. I don’t know where he’ll end up in the all-time rankings, but I’m guessing top-10. Is that too high? Top 15?
Top 5- easy!

Wasn’t he the writer that wanted us to trade them to the Rangers for a bunch of third liners out of the league now

Yes. Then after his 30 goals season he said Caps fans would be ok with trading Ovechkin which was what needed to happen but that Leonsis wouldnt do it and was a loser

If you give Ovie the lowest #5 goal totals from above he finishes with 875 goals after his age 40 season.

He started with 730 goals this season at the age of 36.

There is very little doubt that he breaks the record assuming he is healthy over these next 5 seasons.

Crazy talk. Crazy. But its happening. Its thrilling!

If he misses 2 games this season and 4 games in each of the next four seasons that gives him 370 games left to play over the duration of his current contract.

If his goals per game from here on out drops from his current .614 to .40 starting tomorrow for those entire 370 games, he would end with 897 career goals.

If he stays healthy for the duration of his current contract then the record is pretty much his.

If we took his GPG average from the season before and after each of his two lockouts and his half a season lost to covid, I wonder where he would be right now? Sorry too busy to do the calcs myself ATM.

Paper napkin calcs says he'd be pretty darn close to 99 right now.

First, not a Caps fan (though I had a vintage Mike Gartner jersey back in the day) but I come in peace to confess that every time I skim the evening's scores and I see that Washington has scored, I check to see if Ovi got one.

Tell me, is this my life until he breaks the record? At least, reassure me I'm not the only one outside the hardcore "The Great 8" club?

The world is watching and rooting for him. Including Gretzky! We’re seeing history!
