After reading Marc Dumont's article on Newhook it looks like RHP has way more upside than this guy.Get's knocked off the puck easy, hard on himself, hard time finding open space, oh but wait he's a great guy and who knows maybe we have a Chris Wideman in the making, not particularly good at anything but just a great guy. :banghead:

Every team has four centers, but then you knew that.

Newhook may be played as 2LW, depending on Monahan's heatlh, while also having the ability to play 3C in the short term as well as 2C in the long term. At 22, I certainly would not write him off, especially with that speed and set of hands. As I mentioned elsewhere, part of his low stock is due to the Avs coach preferring vet players, which is the main reason for this opportunity. Bednar was in win-now mode, after a Cup win, despite the downgrade in goaltending, so he was disinclined to nurture young talent.

Moreover, I take solace in the parallels between last year's reactions to the Dach trade and this one. I suspect that there is significant overlap in the naysayers in both groups.
I’m not writing him off, he’s a good player and he was even my choice in 2019

To be fair, pretty much everything you say about Michkov comes across as a barb at this point. I think you’ve sublimated some animosity from your overseas colleagues, perhaps unintentionally.

Actually if I am being completely honest, I find this whole "THEY WOULD BE SO STUPID TO PASS ON MICHKOV, EVERYONE ELSE SUCKS!!!!" thing to be so f***ing obnoxious that I can't help myself. I have Michkov on my draft rankings at 5.

This is incredible revisionist history if you think the majority of people didn't think highly of 70% of the players I listed there.
You’re the one who listed those busts as evidence that this year’s 31st and 37th are tenuous in what is a talent rich draft, all because some different clueless and incompetent management contingents acting more than a decade ago in some cases, made drafting blunders. What solid non-revisionist precedents, I tells ya!

you just have to ask him to

and he's going to drop the time at which they were born, the name of their coach when they were 8 years old, and what grade they got in their 2nd math exam in their last year of high school

I so miss when he did the drafts...

Those were the absolute BEST.

Let's see him for ourselves.

RHP may end up having more upside, but that may end up being because RHP is damn good.

Also, I should add the new management has shown fairly decent pro-scouting in year one targeting Dach, Matheson, Kovacevic, Monahan, Barron. I think they deserve some rope and trust on this one.
I’m down with Jeff Gorton and Kent Hughes. They haven’t given me any reason whatsoever to doubt their knowledge since they joined us.

I find the price a tiny bit steep but I will give them the benefit of the doubt and trust their expertise. It’s definitely worth the shot and I hope in the right environnement Alex Newhook can blossom.

I agree that we’ll have to reserve judgment even if a lot of us don’t like the move at first blush.

do you think this trade happens if the Fla trade was a lottery pick? or even a top-18 pick?
Not lottery. But 17th? Yes. It does. Clearly. Newhook for 17th pick. No doubt. Might have even be easier for both teams to explain it. Avs say that they actually got the same pick he was drafted in. And Habs say that, like I read here, the 17th pick is actually Chiarot and we ALSO keep pick 37th.

31 and 37th is actually what a pick around 18th should be the value of.

Pretty neutral on the trade right now. Not a fan of it but ill go with a wait and see approach. Newhook is still only 22 and may have some untapped potential. Well see i guess

Sure, but there is also the factor that Caufield, Dach, Suzuki need support now not in 4-5 years.

31+37 unlikely to make an impact in the nhl before that timeframe.

They don't have excess nhl ready assets to get in established players (as evidences by the Dubois saga). This is the way to bring in young players that could possibly join your already young core.

It's such a reasonable gamble.
This is the way

honestly it shows me they don't have as much faith in the scouts if they don't see the talent available at 31 etc. I don't think the people on this forum are far off on their talent evaluation and I agree there are franchise players in the goaltender and D postion with the 2 picks we just gave up. We are missing out on filling 2 positions with by taking on Alex f***ing Newhook. I actually prefer the scouts here to the scouts hired by Montreal, they hosers here usually get it right.

This post is amazing. The armchair scouts around here are almost never right but you're so mad you're reimagining history and living in your own crazy world.

A franchise talent at goaltender at 31 or 37, amazing. Goalies are a dart throw at best but this message board has got it figured out. Lololol ok buddy.

I don’t mind the hyperbole and it can be entertaining at times but man, how many times do the same individuals have to say the same thing ad nauseam, and in some instances assorted with incantations and cult-like mantras?

We get it and we got it. And thank-you, I think.

Not saying you are. My statement is focused on your contention that he's not an area of need, when mine is that he aligns with one of the team's most glaring areas of need: high-quality centers, of which we have only two, and maybe 2 1/2, depending on Monahan's durability.

I don't have much faith in the 31st and 37th picks so I don't really understand why people are calling this a fleecing. Last year was an actual deep draft and we got lucky with players of Beck and Hutson's caliber. I just don't see it this year and we've drafted enough busts at that range that I couldn't give a crap.

Here's hoping Newhook takes it to another level.

I like the potential and offensive upside if Newhook hits. He is also 3 years into his development.

The 31st and 37th would be 2-3 years away from contributing meaninfully to the club. Hughes is obviously looking to bolster the club for 23-24

The armchair scouts here usually nail the draft, most scouts just watch video anyways like we do. The head scouts and GM travel, I know a few scouts in the W and they rarely travelled the last 3 years, and it made no impact on their decisions or rankings.

BTW a ton of franchise goalies are later picks, this isn't exactly breaking news
