man, we all know if Sakic offers. you a player in a trade, you just run away, you are getting hosed.
Dealing with Sakic, you’re in the matrix. The bullets are coming at you fast and furious and you need to learn that slo-mo bending backwards technique to outlast him.

We had finished 4th worst in the league and drafted 3rd overall. Domi had played 222 games with Arizona and had 36 goals and 135 points playing with Arizona.

Anyways, the situation is irrelevant. Getting bent over is always bad.

How in the world could you think the situation is irrelevant? Were the Habs rebuilding then when the had Price, Weber, etc.. vs the roster they had this year. It matters a ton. Clearly Hughes thinks he's getting a player today that in a few years will be a good bit better then he is now. Domi would make zero sense for the Habs

I get it, hopefully it will work out and I'll be eating crow. I do have faith in HuGo so hope it works out. Fingers crossed. We'll see.
I don't. So far we lost Toffoli, Lehkonen, two pretty high picks, and they were unable to move Hoffman, Gally, Armia. Mesar and Rohrer picks are puzzling.

If people are freaking about this trade, i can only imagine what tomorrow is like when Reinbacher or Leonard is chosen. For what its worth, im ok with either tho i would take Michkov

Might need to steer clear but dont think i can, i like the punishment

Trading draft picks for Newhook instead of prospects is the most disappointing part of this.

I hope Newhook kicks on and hits a new level with the Canadiens just as Dach did but our prospect pool must be worthless to give away a pair ofvaluable picks in the 30s for Newhook of all people.

Shift some of the deadweight prospects out and let’s reset. Farrell and Roy will never have a spot on the Habs at this
Hughes could had used that pick to get out next franchise goalie.....
That’s what bugs me. It’s a deep draft, and if not a goalie, there’s intriguing possibles up to and beyond 40.

Maybe it’s part of something else that’s brewing.

We just traded two picks in a super deep draft... I'm not loving this. Newhook was pretty far down the depth chart, but Colorado had a lot of injuries last season and he couldn't take advantage.

I really hope we trade 5 for 7 and 22 now.

Newhook, somehow, is worth more than Lehkonen.

Okay.
At the time of the trade I would have gladly taken Newhook for Lehkonen.

But reports were Newhook wasn't on the table.

We'll see what kind of a talent Newhook is. McGuire thinks he could break out to be a 60-70 point player.

I think there was an emotional element to the dach deal because Romanov was charismatic and a fan favourite. People generally accepted that dach had interesting upside though.

I
Exactly, when you trade for a former 3rd overall 3 yrs ago you can think that there is 1st line upside and top 6 at least and on the moment I was not happy because I liked Romanov but 30 min after that I was happy they went for the homerun. I will maybe change my mind on Newhook. I think Hughes traded 31 and 37 because he thought no players in that range have Newhook upside of middle 6 player. I do trust Hughes in general tho

I like this move. Newhook is fast, is skilled and has a good shot. Like him as a winger. Disgruntled fans can bust a nut saying he couldn't crack the top 6 on the Avs but dayum, talk about the holy molly expectations he had to answer to, at age 21-22. No shit. I'm not sure on which wing he plays but he might already be our 2nd best winger in the depth chart.
He mostly played centre

I hope Newhook turns it around it really seems like this trade happened due to Hughes personal relationship with him. I hope that is not the case. As many have pointed out he has had some putrid linemates so If he can play with more gifted players hopefully that uncovers his potential.

i like the deal but i don't like what it means for who we might pick at #5, we added another small forward when we have a lot of similar players coming up and a few already on the roster

i think this deal means that we're way less likely to pick Michkov at 5

PLD haters must love this move, 2 years younger, 6 inch smaller, half the production and full of potential !
Definitely happy the Habs dodged the PLD bullet.

Hopefully Newhook can take a step forward next year. He's 22 so 3 years younger than PLD, will be much cheaper to sign and was much cheaper to acquire. Newhook had a pretty solid rookie season. Last year was his second year and he was underwhelming. Hopefully the change of scenery will be good for him and he can fulfill his potential here in Montreal.

Doesn't this smell like mediocrity? What if Smith is available at 5, doesn't Newhook become redundant? I don't get it.
Smith won't be at NHL level before another two full seasons. Newhook can play on a wing. Not ideal size though.

Newhook production and linemates, by quarter.

Points came when Rantanen was being double shifted.

Not sure how it will work out, my gut says overpay however picks are often over rated on this board and majority of late firsts and after dont even pan

The odds that the 31 and 37 picks end up as good or better than Newhook are pretty slim.

Newhook is going to have a long and productive NHL career. Whether or not he reaches a higher potential offensively is an open question. He will get a shot to play up the lineup clearly. But with the wheels he has and the solid possession metrics he’s already put up at the NHL level I think we are talking about a solid third line type of forward is his floor.

Low risk, high reward move in other words. A lot like the Dach trade last year. Well done HughGo!
