Oh boy, here we go...

The Canadiens absolutely do not have plenty of Newhook type players in the system.

Player that can skate like Newhook are rare in the league, let alone any system. He has Paul Byron wheels, and it's not just straight ahead, he's fast and elusive going North/South or East/West. His skating is very high-end and its what largely sets him apart from other players and it's also an enormous factor in mitigating the detriment of his size.

Pretending he's similar to what we already have is simply admitting that you are not at all familiar with Alex Newhook, which is totally fine.

Please name the players in the Canadiens system that are like Newhook. It should be easy to do, cause you claimed there are plenty of them. Just give me... say, three guys in the Canadiens system and how you think they are similar to Newhook.
avs board says he is not a great skater?? is that sore grapes from them?

I think it’s a worthy gamble for Montreal. He’s got a good shot and was a quality teammate. Not as good of a skater as some think, but he’s got talent.

Can you elaborate on your issues with his skating?

You've obviously seen a lot of him, I'd love to hear your take on why think his skating is overrated.

Thanks!

70pts players don't get you a late first and a 2nd, they usually don't get traded.

This is a gamble similar to Dach. I'm personally not a fan of. I wonder what it means for Beck moving forward when we already have Suzuku, Dach and Newhook down the middle?
Maybe Beck will be part of the price to pay to get Dubois ????

My only question about this trade is who's getting traded away? Because Habs have 13 forwards signed + 2 RFAs (Newhook/Gurianov) and no place for RHP, Ylonen or another else in the Rocket who might be ready for the NHL.

Colorado was very deep in Newhook’s 1st season. This year their depth was awful. One of the worst in the league Imo.

Newhook actually started out the year as the 2nd line centre. He ultimately went down to the 4th line in the playoffs.

He didn’t really fit Colorado’s system, as they are a pace/pressure team. Perhaps in Montreal he’ll feel more at home.
Maybe he got out of shape after winning the cup, happens all the time (Savard lol), but he absolutely is an elite skater.

With the Monahan contract, and the addition of Newhook, it looks like we're taking all chances away for RHP, Ylonen Farrell,Roy,Beck and whichever stud forward we pick at 5 from playing in Montreal at the start of the season regardless of anything they could do during training camp..... while Gallagher, Armia, Hoffman and Dvorak get their guaranteed big juicy minutes of floating around.
At least a couple of these floaters need to be sent away this summer for any of this to make sense.
Ylonen won’t compete with Newhook for icetime.

Roy and Farrell likely don’t have much of a future with the Habs. They need top6 TOI and are undersized.

Beck is too far away to worry about and if he comes it’ll be as a middle6er first.

Gallagher, Armia, Hoffman, and Dvorak will only play good minutes if there aren’t better alternatives. Don’t worry about that.

Farrell and Roy need to start in Laval.

Beck is still Junior Age.

RHP's spot is his to lose.

Ylonen needs to beat the vets but if he does he will be on the team. He will not survive waivers.

Dvorak and Gallagher are NHL players, even if overpaid a little or a lot.

Armia and Hoffman have their work cut out for them to get a starting role.

I think they are going to correct the mistake from last season and barring trades start Slaf in Laval to build his confidence back up.

? - Suzuki- Caufield
Newhook-Dach-Monahan
RHP-Dvorak-Anderson
Armia - Evans -Gallagher
Pez - Ylonen

Hoffman and Pitlick on waivers or to Laval

Or they try Slaf on the top line if they don't bring someone in as a reclamation project or cap dump for assets.

Don't hate the trade but was looking forward to grabbing a goalie with one of the two picks they gave up.

I'm not too sure how we'll be a contender if we're populated by 5'10" smurfs.
This seems pretty dramatic. I was looking at your list of our short forwards from earlier and Caufield is the only guy that's really a lock to remain with the roster. RHP is a nice late bloomer but that's a player that comes and goes, not someone we need to plan around being here for 5-6 years. Mesar/Farrell are prospects who haven't proven anything, and Gallagher is basically just gonna fill a 3rd line checker role until he finally breaks down for good and goes on LTIR. If we end up with an overabundance of 5'10 skilled wingers that's a good problem to have and we can cross that bridge when we get there.

I would be more concerned about this if we didn't already have Dach and Slafkovsky on the roster, I just don't really think that Caufield, Suzuki, Newhook, Dach, and Slafkovsky as 5/6 of the guys plausibly pencilled into the future top 6 is really an issue in terms of size, particularly given the Habs are shaping up to be pretty big and mean on defence.

For everyone asking how he couldn't produce on a good Colorado team. *shrug*

Was it because he couldn't hack more, or just typical "young prospects need to earn his icetime" thing?

We'll see.

As for people complaining about size... this team just drafted Slaf last year and added Dach. I think they're just going for the best players they can find at the price they're willing to pay.

We had MB focus on "meh biceps" for so long, and now we complain about going for skilled players?

Having tried Drouin and Hoffman with Caufield/Suzuki there is absolutely nothing preventing us from trying Newhook.
There was nothing preventing us from driving a harder bargain or trying elsewhere, either.

This is not a competitive team’s top6 barring incredible and unheard of growth from all the listed players
Unheard of growth is a bit harsh, but yes definitely need to see considerable growth. I don't think it's competitive either, but until we get lucky with the lottery and our scouts can actually find star talent outside the first like everyone else, this is the best we can do.

Maybe a little column A, column B.

I read somewhere (this could be completely false, please check me if I'm wrong, lurking Avs fans) that Bednar is pretty old school when it comes to young players (a guy like Makar aside, obviously).

I'm not big on the size thing either tbh. We've got decent-sized guys throughout the lineup.

Your quick to judge Roy and Farrell; they both absolutely destroyed all opposition in their respective leagues. I'll hold out for a while before making that assessment.

Do you think it’s typical for a rebuilding team that lacks high-end talent prospects to trade away the 13OA in one year and the 31OA and 37OA?

Dach was a good addition, will Newhook follow? If Newhook ends up contributing to our success then we won’t be drafting top5 next year will we?

It’s a genuine question because it sure as hell doesn’t seem like they plan to tank ever again. Are you happy with a haul of Mesar, Slafkovsky, and whoever they pick at 5OA for first round picks from our tank-era?
Trading mid round to low picks for young talent absolutely counts as rebuilding. If he was trading those picks for vets, I'd say it doesn't make sense. But a 31st for Newhook? For sure that makes sense. If they believe there's more to this player, then I don't see how a late first hurts us.

We've still got our high picks that we're using to get the best in the draft. I've got no issue with that at all.
