WTF did we get into?

The Avs forced Newhook at centre and it didn’t work?

Lemme guess — apologists and enablers will be charging in with « MSL and Nicholas will fix him ».

I'm willing to see how Newhook does, he was one of the players I wanted in 2019. The wildcard is the strength of the draft. They traded two top 40 picks. If this ends up another Girard/Debrincat they'll be criticized and with good reason.

Overpayment and the move also feels rushed and unnecessary, I don't like it.

Hughes sure loves his redemption projects but he won't hit on all of them, I wish he had kept the picks this time. Bottom line is this year was beyond garbage and we'll end up with Newhook and Leonard as consolision prizes instead of game breaking talent. Tomorro
2 years of tanking with all the dreams of top line players, we end up with Slaf, Dach, Newhook, and Leonard/Reinbacher/Dvorsky. Can't say much outside we can only hope.

Other piece that's I think important here is that of Newhook's 30P, 28 came at even strength and his per 60 numbers are pretty solid. I don't think they're making this trade with the intention of using him as a 3C, to me this is to plug him in on the wing and see if you can unlock the speed and offensive upside that way.

I don't think this is exactly a consolation prize/reactionary move for missing on Dubois either, they just simply wouldn't have had the cap to do both so once Dubois was off the table they went with plan B (and this likely means we're going to eat another bad 1yr contract for another pick, likely Josh Bailey or Tyler Myers).

Farrell will never make it
Mesar will never nake it

Nothing worrying
Farrell and Mesar are prospects BUT it is worrisome that we picked a very valuable 26th overall pick for a player we are already thinking one year later that he won't make it. If it was a 4th round pick like Farrell, fine, but a 1st round pick. Ouch.

People keep saying a 1st and a 2nd but the 1st was 31 overall lol

If the Florida pick was in the mid first I’d be questioning it, but 31 was well outside the drop off of the 4th tier of this draft. You’re talking about guys who probably never make the NHL or if they do are dime a dozen players.

Newhook has star upside, he’s an elite skater with high skill, high IQ, and a great shot.

I just hope the trade was done analytically rather than emotionally. If it was a trade based on the latter, HuGo is not going to work in this market.

If they see something they can unlock in newhook, fine. I just don't want it to be reactionary to the pld fallout..... Even though I wasn't in favour of going after pld in the first place.
Ya mean like when Bergevin screwed up the KK debacle then traded that 1st for Dvorak ?

I was hoping Hughes would keep of of these two picks (late 1st or early second rounder) to pick a good prospect goalie. I hope he has other trades up his sleeves to do so.

As for Newhook, I don't see where they gonna fit him. Suzuki anmd Dach are the first two centermen, Beck is not that far to the 3rd line center duties either. And Monahan and Dvorak are still around.

Unless he packages Newhook + ???? to Winnipeg for Dubois ?????

Best of luck to Newy with you guys.

Didn’t work out in Colorado. They tried him at Centre and it didn’t click. Maybe it was too much expectations early in his career to do so for a contending team.

Hopefully he improves in Montreal and it’s a win-win for both teams.

It's fine if ppl don't like the price but this talk of this being a Bergevin style trade is really out there.

Don't even waste your time with "trade evaluations" here.

HFHabs is, by far, the most clueless fanbase on this entire site when it comes to players who play on other teams.

For many, many years, this title was held by the Maple Leafs Forum, but about ten years ago the tide started to turn and a lot of great posters from the Habs Forum left or got chased out and have been replaced by a strange hybrid of extremely opinionated posters who somehow don't seem to care if they actually know what they are talking about before they form their opinions.

Just go back to the original Dach trade thread. I just gave up on responding on the day of the thread because it was plainly obvious that they didn't have the faintest idea what kind of player Dach was, they simply went to his hockeydb page and then started complaining.

You're wasting your time.
