So we went from a GM who hired everybody he ever had a beer with to a GM who trades for guysfor whom he acted as an agent or coached.

We paid up a couple of real high picks in a deep draft. , and he is om the small side. Nor sold on this trade at all and am getting perplexed with the ex client thing. And Sakic sigh.

Hope Hughes is right,

I was hoping Hughes would keep of of these two picks (late 1st or early second rounder) to pick a good prospect goalie. I hope he has other trades up his sleeves to do so.

As for Newhook, I don't see where they gonna fit him. Suzuki anmd Dach are the first two centermen, Beck is not that far to the 3rd line center duties either. And Monahan and Dvorak are still around.

Newhook is a winger/center type that can play center if you need him too. I don't consider him a true type center.

Well, i think this officially closes the PLD talks.

I like Newhook. He'll get more of a chance to play a big role in Montreal than he had with the Avs. Seems like another Dach type move, which I loved last year. Let's see how this plays out!
Having tried Drouin and Hoffman with Caufield/Suzuki there is absolutely nothing preventing us from trying Newhook.

are we anywhere near the same situation then we were in when we traded for Domi?
We had finished 4th worst in the league and drafted 3rd overall. Domi had played 222 games with Arizona and had 36 goals and 135 points playing with Arizona.

Anyways, the situation is irrelevant. Getting bent over is always bad.

Farrell and Mesar are prospects BUT it is worrisome that we picked a very valuable 26th overall pick for a player we are already thinking one year later that he won't make it. If it was a 4th round pick like Farrell, fine, but a 1st round pick. Ouch.

What's happening with Mesar should tell us about the value of those 31st and 37th picks...

I don't think most on here were impressed with the Dach trade when it happened including myself.Hugo know what they are doing.Give it a chance

I think there was an emotional element to the dach deal because Romanov was charismatic and a fan favourite. People generally accepted that dach had interesting upside though.

We'll just have to agree to disagree bud. I hate this trade with every fiber of my being lol. We'll see how it plays out.

I don't like the trade but I also know that these things take time and that most fans don't know half of what they think they do so most of the time it's just a bunch of noise. Either Hughes is going to build us into a contender or he's not and we'll be f***ed for more years until someone else takes over.

But even if you think this is the worst trade ever, it's still very clear Hughes has a plan, which right off the bat makes the situation very different from MB who clearly didn't know what a plan is.

In that case
That’s only semantics. We’re a rebuilding team that has traded off a 1st and a 2nd in a deep draft. There will be fallers and we’ll bite ourselves.

In reality, we’ve shipped out quality roster players — they just had yet to be named.

Friggin’ Sakic — Hughes learned nothing from his past dealings with him.
in that case we should just wait for those not yet named that we might add . As no way Dvorak is not traded now .

I didn’t like the Dach trade when it happened but obviously like it now. I feel worse about this trade, but will definitely give it a year before calling it a loss

Not sure about this one. We have plenty of Newhook type players in the system. Why not use those assets for a young RD with size?

Terrible deal. Sakic fleeced HuGo.

Newhook is top 6 or bust. Soft, weak, never wins puck battles but isn't a sniper who can put pucks in the net.

He's not going to be good enough for top 6 - even on this team.

Enough of that shit.

It’s Le P’tit David era all over again (but with better talent).

Newlook, huh? More like an old look, one we’re all too familiar with.

People keep saying a 1st and a 2nd but the 1st was 31 overall lol

If the Florida pick was in the mid first I’d be questioning it, but 31 was well outside the drop off of the 4th tier of this draft. You’re talking about guys who probably never make the NHL or if they do are dime a dozen players.

Newhook has star upside, he’s an elite skater with high skill, high IQ, and a great shot.
Hughes could had used that pick to get out next franchise goalie.....

It would be hilarious if Newhook ends up producing more than Vilardi and Dubois next season

Dubois hasn't been a strong point producer for years, Vilardi is already a better offensive player.

Honestly, stick Newhook with the kinds of players Dubois plays with on the PP, in a set-up that uses him and give him the ice-time, and he'd produce the same. Dubois' value comes from his size and how he uses it.

Very steep tho
Eller for two second picks, which were then flipped for Shaw.

Seems like the rate for middle 6 players scoring 30 points a season. The difference this time around is that Newhook is 22 and Eller and Shaw were far older.

The value seems fair.

Newhook hasn't done much since drafted and I don't think there is a lot of demand for his services. Why did we send a late 1st , an early second, and a B prospect for him? What hurt more is 2023 is a deep draft and the 31st and 37th may get us prospects who can be as good as Newhook in a couple of years.
