In Nash's and Hagelin's absences, coach Alain Vigneault and GM Glen Sather have other options to address their forwards' deficiencies. Vigneault can start by making good on his promise to demote either Benoit Pouliot or Mats Zuccarello from the second line to give second-year forward J.T. Miller, 20, a more prominent role.
Sather has an open roster spot - due to Nash's being on injured reserve - and approximately $2.25 million of cap space due to Hagelin's unavailability on LTI. So the Rangers GM could recall Chris Kreider, 22, for example, and give the 2012 playoff darling the opportunity he deserved out of a training camp in the first place.
Kreider didn't play well most of the preseason, but it turned out he wasn't in a position to succeed, either, on the left wing of Richards and Nash, who both drifted aimlessly for the first several games.
