Questions like this doesn't really make sense as it depends entirely on what you do with the extra cap space.

Example:
Matthews + Panik = 14.384
Aho + Nyqvist = 13.954

In that specific example, I'd rather have Aho and Nyqvist as they make a much better duo than Matthews and Panik, for about the same money. I don't see how you could really argue that either. But, you can do the same the other way and 'waste' the extra space on a bad signing like Branden Tanev instead.

Point is, that extra space can make me lean Aho, or Matthews depending on how it's used.

Just putting this out here...

I think Aho is better, or at worst right on par with Matthews. Therefore right now it's an rather easy decision.

Eh I'll take Matthews but it's much closer than Leafs nation would like to think it is. Especially when considering contracts.

I still want to see a full healthy 90+ point season from Matthews though because I'm confident that is where Aho will be next year.

Aho had 400 more minutes of ice time including a minute and a half more per game. That's a significant difference.

Matthews is gonna explode in produciton if he can just stay healthy for 82 games.

I think thats the number one reason for taking Aho here. I think youre going to get 30-35 goals, better defensive play and better health from Aho compared to a slightly higher goals per game/points per game from Matthews with worse defensive play, worse health and a noticeably bigger cap hit.

Matthews team is also better which I think accounts for some of the difference in production. In 2 years from now when Svechnikov is running on all cylinders, the gap in production points wise probably closes up.

Matthews is definitely the better player right now but I dont think its enough to make up for the health and contracts

Matthew's is definitely the better player. That should be obvious.

But 3 mil better? Taking contracts into consideration I'd rather have aho I think.

Edit: crazy that ~2 years ago posters were arguing that W. Nylander was better then Aho. Now we have Aho beating Auston in a poll lol

I have Aho. Matthews strength is in his goal scoring ability that is for sure. I just like Aho's playmaking ability and is still putting up 30 goals. They are the same age which is nice to compare players. Aho kills penalties which could skew some stats in terms of ice time and points. Matthews injuries maybe overblown but at the same time Aho has put out the best season out of the two. That cap hit is a little much of a difference too.

I would still go with Mathews. He has a superstar quality to him, a confidence and leadership that I think will take the Leafs to the cup one day.

Love Aho too, fantastic player and so exciting to watch. But Austin for me. I say that as a Canucks fan (hard to say something nice about Toronto ;))

Aho is borderline superstar.

Lmao, in what world (outside of Toronto) is Matthews better than Aho.

He's not even the best or 2nd best player on his own team.
really?? any objective fan can see that Matthews>Aho

Aho + Teravainen = $13.85 million combined, 159 points combined last season

Matthews = $11.6 million on his own, 73 points

That's where the contracts come into play. The Canes are paying their top two forwards COMBINED only $2.25 million more than Matthews makes on his own.

It's not Matthews' fault at all, good for him for getting paid. But there's no way Matthews and whatever other forward they could have on the roster for $2.25 million are ever going to add up to 160 points.

That additional cap space could be spent on Brandon Tanev, or nothing, if you're Carolina. I kid, sort of. Cap space is only useful if you put it to good use.
