After Ovi, who needs the Cup the most to cement their status?

Thornton and Lundqvist like Ovechkin before them are both HoF locks and don’t really need a cup. Winning one would be a nice bonus and if you do it in Colorado it earns you a free jersey retirement :D

Marleau winning one would add another compiling stat to his CV for HoF - but I’m preparing already for the disappointment of his induction so I don’t think a cup would be the straw that breaks the camel back.

Luongo, Karlsson, Giroux, Stamkos - I think these guys will be fine regardless. Maybe not a first ballot HoF inductees, but they’ll get there eventually when their career is over.

McDavid, Kucherov and others - too young to worry about a cup yet, they will have enough chances to either win one or build a nice CV without one.

Weber, Suter, Price, Benn, Seguin, Bobrovsky, Tarasenko, Rinne - these are the guys that really need a cup. They have their ups and downs but their career really could use another highlight to put them over a top.

This. McDavid needs a deep playoff run (and preferably a Cup) to get into that stratosphere.
That or he sacrifices some of his skill and ability for two-way play and becomes a perennial Selke candidate that has the Oilers near the top every season.

Outside of him, Joe Thornton, John Tavares, Henrik Lundqvist, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Carey Price come to mind from people where a Cup would cement their legacies.
And Pride of the Senators Mark Borowiecki, of course.

What exactly are you saying here? The Oilers would be better if he focuses more on defense and used in a much more defensive role? That makes no sense.

Why do some look at the scoring leaders and wonder how much better their teams would be if they didn't sacrifice defense for offense?

The way I see it Lundqvist doesn't 'need' a cup to cement his status as a playoff performer, which is usually what cups mean. He did all he could that run they had against the Kings, but his team just didn't score. He also has a pretty good track record in do or die games. Thornton on the other hand probably only has a season or two left and a cup would add a lot to his resume.

while it would be great if thornton wins it, it is not needed to "cement" his status at this time. he is one of the legends of the game and first ballot HOF, and every night he plays he's passing all-time greats on the charts. the other night he passed lemieux's assist total.

gotta go with another player that doesn't have the same level of accomplishment yet. mcdavid maybe because he is still so young but he won't need it in a few more seasons.

For forwards it's Thornton for sure.

For defencemen it's Burns and Karlsson right now. Both are among the top active dmen in the league and both haven't won a Cup and now both are playing on the same team.

For goalies it's Bobby Lou, Hank and Rinne. All 3 have been to a Cup final and none of them were able to pull it off.

Mcdavid is gonna be compared to Sid for most of his career. If he can get 1 or even 2 Cups he might well be considered the better player when all is said and done when you consider he's probably gonna win a lot of individual hardware if he stays healthy.

Crosby could cement himself as the #5 player all-time with another Cup or 2 with a look at #4.

Crosby isn’t touching the big 4.

Does he have a shot at #5 all time? Absolutely. But he’s not getting into the big 4 absent some unprecedented second half surge to his career which doesn’t appear to be the case thus far.

Has a cup
Yup, totally forgot he already played in 10-11 season with the Bruins and had a pretty good 3+4 stat line in 13 games (even having a 4 point game). I still think a cup win as a 1C will do wonders for the perception of his career - but maybe he’ll manage to make it regardless. Anyway he doesn’t belong in this thread.

I guess you can replace Seguin with Tavares on that list - than again, maybe Tavares has done enough already to be a hall of famer.

there is no way he is touching number 4

the crosby love has to stop right here daver. the only one looking at 4 is you

A player like Jean Beliveau just got some looks at #3 and #4 in the HOH Top 100 project. Perhaps it's a long shot but he argubly has the best resume by age 31/after 14 seasons than any player outside the Big 4.

OV hasn't been ranked in that project yet BTW, Crosby was #12.
