After Ovi, who needs the Cup the most to cement their status?

A player like Jean Beliveau just got some looks at #3 and #4 in the HOH Top 100 project. Perhaps it's a long shot but he argubly has the best resume by age 31/after 14 seasons than any player outside the Big 4.

OV hasn't been ranked in that project yet BTW, Crosby was #12.
then number 4 is cancelled for crosby if you bring up JB

OV will be soon enough

Kinda depends on what "cementing status" means in this case.

Thornton or Marleau could win it but they're not the leaders of the team. Does it matter as much then?

Ovie wasn't exactly as important as he maybe was before in his career but still won the Conn Smythe (deserved or not).

So I think being an important player (top5) and winning the Cup is what actually matters.

Even if it was maybe not deserved he was still easily the 2nd or 3rd best player of his team. He played a big role.

I don't. He's a surefire 1st ballot hall of famer without it. If he gets the cup at this point it'll be a nice Ray Bourque moment, if he doesn't he'll be among the best to not win one.

While he is a first ballot hall of famer, that asterisk for being one of the best not to win one stings a lot of ex-pros. It will be that little seed of doubt that always haunts their legacy.

Of course it doesn’t. Context is everything. Always is, always will be.

Speaking of this, I came to think about Ladislav Kohn when a thread about best Leaf winger ever came up on this board. (for some reason I thought he would become something in the late 90s, playing on Sundin’s wing perhaps, don’t ask why)

So, ended up on the guys wiki page and there he is on a photo with the Cup raised over his head in his hometown (in Czech Republic).

Turned out he played 4 regular season games one year with Detroit. (when they won the Cup, must have been 02)

4. Regular season. Games.

And he’s with the Cup in his hometown in Europe, raising it over his head. In a fairly big crowd of people.

Wow. That's a blast from the past.

I somewhat remember Scotty Bowman having some odd affinity for Kohn. However, it was overshadowed by his also strange affinity for Jason Williams.

IIRC, Kohn made the team out of training camp because they had some injuries, but was the first sent down when someone got healthy. He never got into a game. He wanted out after he wasn't recalled for two weeks. They then assigned him to the Espoo Blues in Finland. Kohn's absence is probably what led to Sean Avery getting a pretty extended look that year.

His 4 games came after Espoos season ended with 3 weeks to go in the NHL season. Kohn served as a warm body while the Wings rested veteran guys after they locked up the Presidents trophy.

Along with Sean Avery and Jason Williams, Kohn then became one of the Wings extra forwards for the playoffs. However, Williams dressed for all 9 of the games that their regular forwards missed.

Apparently all the Czechs from that team (Hasek, Fischer, Slegr and Kohn) planned their days with the Cup around each others and celebrated while some big flooding was going on there. That is likely where the Wiki pic came from.

Kohn was given a qualifying offer, but never signed. The Red Wings then sent him to Calgary for future considerations during the next seasons training camp.

Jumbo Joe is the correct answer, and it couldn't happen to a more loved guy around the league.

If my team is out, and SJS are in, that's who I am cheering for.

Team wise I hope to see TOR or MTL win a cup, it would be good to have the OG's of the game, and the fans of both places deserve it very much.

If I had a sentimental favorite it would have been Jumbo Joe until he assfaced Oshie. Can’t vote for Hank either being a Ranger and all.

Request denied, no soup for anyone!
