I think it was a very reasonable take at the time. All indications were that he only wanted to play for us, and two 2nds seemed very steep for a guy that we were probably 90%+ to have in a year anyway; also saving a year on his ELC.

Obviously if we had the benefit of hindsight, and knew how good he was going to be, nobody would have made a peep.

I know no one knew he would be this good but there's no reason to play with fire. Imagine if we didn't make a trade and he signed elsewhere. Most players don't play for their childhood favorite team I don't think it's a given he would have signed with us.

That would have been a terrible outcome for sure.

What the conversation came down to at the time was:

Cost of trading for him
Two 2nd round draft picks
One ELC year while we weren't contending

Cost of not trading for him
Probably a <10% chance of missing out on him.

Certainly not cut and dry, but Gorton's decision not to take the chance has definitely been justified.

Even if we hadn't traded for him, he probably is still a Ranger right now; but given what he has become, no way would it be worth the risk again.

IQ is extremely underrated. Gretzky wasn’t the biggest or fastest or strongest. Gretzky was the smartest hockey player to ever play, and it turned very pedestrian physical attributes to the greatest player to ever play the game. Fox isn’t a physical specimen. He isn’t fast or strong. But he’s smart. Not as smart as Gretzky, but one of the smartest players in the game today, and it’s carrying him to greatness.
Not only that, but he has some of the silkiest hands in the NHL. Sure, he won’t always be flashy, but it’s that puck control combined with near-generational IQ that really makes him one of the top defensemen in the league.

Watched Fox in college and then at Canes rookie camp. In my eyes, he was the best player on the ice, even then. I kept pointing him out to my son and he kept making play after play. It's who he is.

If we had waited a year, he would have only signed a 2 year ELC since he would have been age 22.

Kind of weird that Hedman is so good at limiting attempts against not so good at expected goals. So basically he limits total shot attempts against really well (by playing in the offensive zone?) but when he does allow them they are pretty high danger?
