oh good to hear on rykov. I personally love this kid. I think he's a stud. he may force his way onto the roster.

I have had fox penciled in for a while. but I cant see both shattenkirk/pionk returning I think one is gone.

Skjei
DeAngelo
Staal
Fox
Hajek
Smith
one of Shattenkirk/Pionk
Rykov

that's 8 Dmen however Smith can and probably will be considered a 8th D/12 or 13 forward so I can see rykov being with the big club.

Ideally. I'd love for both shattenkirk and pionk to be moved so we can bring in Myers or trouba

Im going to be pissed of they start calling him "Foxey". Hockey clubs are for the most part terrible with their nicknames. It's almost always a "Y" at the end. Of course...Fast being the exception. "Quickie" is a fine nickname.

This kid goes to Harvard. Hoping for something like "Smaaaty-Pants"

I really don't like Myers and he's about to hit 30. He's not worth a big long contract that someone is gonna want to give him

I have mixed feelings about the trade. A part of me hoped that the Rangers would skip Panarin and Fox, struggle for one more year in the hopes for another good draft in 2020. It was always rumored that the Rangers were his first choice, but he ultimately wanted to play on a team that he had a shot to make the NHL squad, which is very questionable with the hurricanes. Assuming the Rangers weren't 100% sure that Fox would only play for them, or that Fox wouldnt be scared off by the large defensive prospect pool, which only gets larger next year, this is a trade you have to make.

Rangers get a top prospect for a 2nd and 3rd (or a 2nd)...I don't see what the issue is? Is it because we could have waited and gotten him later for nothing? Or because he was taken in the 3rd round instead of the 1st round? Price seems fair all considering. This teams prospect list is sick.
I’ve been posting since January that Smith would be bought out this summer (in the likely event that he is not traded) That's not speculation on my part. I’ll leave it at that.

This is the kind of vision we are talking about when it comes to Fox. This is the play I immediately thought of when the trade was announced.

Now, in the NHL that guy most likely has his stick tied up, but we're not looking at the exact play, but the type of play and the situation.

At that point, USA was down by 1. 3rd period, roughly half way through. Best on best with Canada playing USA. It was a great deflection by White, but it was a perfect pass. He came through in the biggest moment for his team.

These are the kind of plays he can make. Now, we'll need to make sure he is getting 1PP at some time this season. Maybe not off the bat, but we need to see him in that role.

Wonder if for the Worlds if Drury will ask if he gets paired with Skjei. Would be a great time to test that out and see how it works.

I think it bears repeating:

If the Rangers are aggressive in this draft, it will come with a significant cost, it will likely result in fewer picks, and it will assume a degree of risk.

How high the cost, and how many picks it requires, is unknown at this time. A lot will depend on final positions.

For example 18 and 28 might get you 14. Likewise, getting to 12 might require 18, 28 and 58. So you have to be prepared for that possibility. And that is only an option if several scenarios fall into place over the next week.

The alternative is moving a known quantity in Kreider, and then potentially having to use a pick (or picks) to move up again.
I'm in COMPLETE agreement that quality is absolutely vital now. I realize depth is always a need. But I really want to add elite / border elite to this group. I am completely ready to deal who / what we need to, in order to do this.

Hell ****ing yea!!!!

Top pair potential dman. I'll GLALDY give them our 2nd round pick for that, that pick would be VERY unlikely to turn into a player that Fox can be.

After Kakko will be sitting nicely having the #1 prospect pool in the league.

Honestly, we just got our second top-10 pick. Fox has a better floor AND a better ceiling than most of those available in the 8-12 range. Plays a more rare position too. RDs are the most difficult ones to acquire.

This board always pisses all over itself whenever these great NCAA players come to us. They always vastly under perform compared to expectations

This board always pisses all over itself whenever these supposed great Dmen come to us. They always vastly under perform compared to expectations. Doubly so if they're offensive defenseman

I'll believe we actually won this trade when I see him being a good dman for us.

Of course they do. People here set unrealistic expectations from day 1. It is impossible to live up to them.

I'd say Hayes performed pretty well for us.

Hell no. I'm not even bitter about Matt Gilroy, Kevin Hayes, Tim Erixon, Jimmy Vesey, keith yandle and Kevin Shattenkirk. I'm just not buying the hype because this place does not know how to evaluate these NCAA kids or offensive Dmen.

Hayes is the only one who at least roughly matched expectation...although it wasn't until the last year or two that he did
Stepan, McD, Kreider

Something's gotta give on defense. 4 RHD isn't going to work. Hopefully Pionk is the odd man but I think it's more likely that we see Shattenkirk go.

Pionk played last year as a 23 year old late blooming rookie. He may improve. Likely will. Shattenkirk is only going to get worse. If we can get a second for him, it's a win-win. Go with 3 young RDs: ADA, Fox, Pionk.

He is on NYR roster today, so, actually, per the English language, that is precisely speculation.

Maybe you are confident in some inside info, maybe you think speculation has a more squishy definition which implies lack of rationale (such as inside info).

But actually, apparently since at least January, you have been speculating regarding Smith's future w NYR.

What this DOES do is take a way a possible valuable chip to help the Rangers move up in the first round. That #37 overall pick has some value

We have 1 or 2 more second rounders, depending on what Dallas does. We can still move up.

Rangers waiting until he becomes UFA would be taking a big risk. Not only that, but signing him this summer vs this summer makes 0 difference in terms of ELC control, as his standard ELC would be 2 years next off season anyways. Gorton has tons of draft capital to work with, and by moving this year's 2nd (and next year's 3rd, possibly 2nd) he skips 3 seasons of development. With that in mind, much more worth it to ensure he comes here AND is developing in our system. This is what I would call "accelerating a rebuild", if only just a bit.

Yeah, and we wouldn’t only have to wait until next summer, we couldn’t exchange a single word with him before 16 August. We would have to have an open spot for him waiting without knowing if he was coming or not.

Not that happy with what we gave up considering all reports were that he wanted to sign as a ranger. Whatever though, not the end of the world. I would have no complaints whatsoever if it was the Tampa 2nd rounder. Hopefully Gorton can recoup a pick in trading Pionk?

if we aren't going UFA righty D which I hope we are, I trade pionk and keep shattenkirk to mentor tony and fox. that's the best guy to mentor these kids how to play to their strengths.

I don't think so.

It is worth the price to have him in our system, developing the way WE want. I'd have preferred Tampa's pick but meh. I think it is a pretty fair deal.
Bingo. Plus, this is the type of move that all of El Jeffe's asset acquiring over the last 2 years allows us to do without it really impacting us all that much. We'll still have at least 2 1sts and 2 2nds after moving this pick and we add a kid who is a stud.

Love it.
