84, 87 and 07 are the three drafts that really jump out to me as the gold standard.

If we go by hall of fame production. Only 84 has one with Patrick roy, but the first 4 rounds in 87 all produced top line players, which is crazy.

You are spot on...the 84 draft led to the 86 Cup without a doubt. The 87 draft was instrumental in the 93 Cup win

Norlinder was always inconsistent, everywhere. The idea that he was some great defenseman in Europe is bogus. He had some great stretches, but he was never consistently very good. The prospect pool was much weaker back then, and the regime at the time was eager for some successful prospects. He's back in Europe now so maybe he puts it all together. But as a prospect he was always a small offensive D-Man who had never consistently produced offensively, so in other words, he was always a longshot.

Engstrom has a better frame and a much more solid base of skills than Norlinder. The only reason anyone is comparing them is because they are both Habs drafted Swedish defensemen. Their games aren't similar, and Engstrom had a much better Euro career pre-ELC.

Norlinder should be compared to other small offensive dmen who haven't ever had great success offensively, like Corey Schueneman or Kale Clague. Problem is, they are harder to find because most of those guys never make the NHL...

Some good points, but I would not compare 5 ft 9 Mete to 6 ft Norlinder, size wise.

For sure. Norlinder's more similar to guys like Clague and Schueneman in terms of smaller skilled dmen who never really excelled anywhere consistently offensively. Mete was all speed and skating (and was ultimately a better prospect and NHLer).

I believe that 2022 can be better than 2007 if Slaf, Hutson, Beck and Engstrom reach their full potential, Slaf and Hutson are elite//star talent, Beck can be a elite 3C and Engstrom top 3-4 two-way D, maybe top pairing D.

It's going to be depend of Beck and Engstrom. I prefer Slaf to Pacioretty and Hutson to Subban. Beck and Engstrom vs McDonagh ?!?!
