Nice little scouting report on him. I think that's what I see in him as well. The lack of elite playmaking is one of the things that keep me from thinking he has true top pair upside. It's not like it's bad, it's just not crazy high end. If he was anymore offensively skilled, I'd say he'd be a top pair guy all day.

What you still have is a fantastic D prospect.

He creates with his skating and his shot, his first pass is great too. He can still be very productive with those skills alone but I would expect Adam Nicholas will work with him on using his shooting ability to open up the playmaking game.

Same growth should be expected out of Mailloux.

Guhle Reinbacher Hutson Mailloux Trudeau Engstrom Harris Xhekaj Konyushkov Struble Norlinder Barron

Gonna be hard to predict the best of the bunch.

Guhle Reinbacher Hutson Engstrom Xhekaj Mailloux might be it with Struble, Harris or Trudeau being the swing 7th man.
lol it's so crazy. I would've thought Xhekaj might be somewhat disposable (relatively)but seeing how much he seems improved this year was really heartening. I know it's early but he moved so well and the puck skills are there.

Oh I think he can too I'm just not sure if the offensive tools are THAT high end. Top pairing high end. There's potential for him to show more as the season goes on. He's silky smooth but deceptively strong. I'm only trying to point out the tiny not even flaw that I see in his game.

He's become one of my favourite prospects.

Yeah every time I watch him I'm like.. uhh, I don't think I can project a future Habs defense without him on it.. and he's able to play the right side.

I don't envy the Habs brass on how they sort all this out but they have more than enough ammunition on defense prospects alone to make a big splash.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's something to be had with Buffalo.

No kidding it's going to be tough. Harris is a guy that is often pegged as a throw in trade piece, and yet even with his lack of production, MSL is giving him and Guhle big minutes. So no, he likely isn't a trade in throw in piece. Kovacevic is also getting minutes. And then we have Wifi and Barron. And more guys pouring in and challenging over the next 2 years.

They need to be given as much of a chance as we can because we have to be right on who stays and who goes. And the coach and GM may have different views. MSL may like Harris, and he may be a less physical kind of Josh Gorges, but do you keep him over a guy with more upside like Barron ?

Yes, will be tough for sure.

I think the sorting is that some of these guys may have to prove they’re the man to beat the others out. It’s been a while since we’ve had clear talents need to prove themselves to make the roster. It may really be beneficial for development, as much as it might mean we have to let go of guys we wish we didn’t.

Pecking order for me right now (obviously can change based on future play):
Matheson
Guhle
Kovacevic
Xhekaj
Barron
Savard
Harris

If that is your order of wh is most effective all around as a dman right now, I more or lo less have it the same.

But when it comes to who I see as most effective long term, my list is very different.

And a great skating dman like Matheson could still be really good for the next 8 years or more.

And Kovacic was always young enough to be part of the fure. Now he's playing like a dman that looks like a very effective stay at home dman long term.

Is it ever crowded back there. Clearly not everyone who is deserving and who we'd want to stay can stay. Hopefully Hughes can pull off some good trades.

good to hear i know not alot of people know him because he plays overseas but i think he will be a big part of our def in the future

I talk with other fans for other teams here in the Halifax area and they talk about others like Reinbacher, Hutson and Roy is coming. I keep telling them, we have a bit more than that in the pipeline and don't forget this name... Engstrom. Kid can play and at both ends too.

One thing I was pondering about is our waiver challenge as the years move forward. We are facing that with Primeau and Ylonen this year and I'm sure it's going to get cluttered even more once all that draft power starts to filter into Laval. It will be interesting to see who we might loose on waivers and if there is another expansion draft. That could hurt us... depending on timing. I rather another expansion draft sooner than later. 3 years or less. Anything more than 3 years, we will loose someone we prefer not too.

Yes my list is about right now. That's why it does not include any prospects.

If I had to take a flier on what the D-corps would look like 2025-26, I would guess:

Matheson, Guhle, Barron as the top-3.

Xhekaj, Struble (sophomore), Reinbacher (rookie), Engstrom (rookie) making up the bottom 4.

Savard, Harris and Kovacevic traded by or before TDL 2025.

Mailloux on final ELC year, learning how to play RW down in Laval, maybe cup of coffee in Montreal.

Hutson an AHL offensive specialist that needs a lot of sheltering.

Trudeau a Laval Alternate Captain, glue guy for that team.

Russian guys still in Russia.

A forward line with Hutson at LW and Mailloux at RW could be really dangerous. 😄
