Sanford was here during what may be the lamest offensive system I have seen in 10 years.

If not ever. Even in all our dump and chase years, at least we hit and forced turnovers and got quality chances. We didn't even hit in the Sanford era.

He was not alone not scoring. Kuz, Bura, Willy, Eller, All D except Alzner....

We switched to a fast pace offensive system just as we sent down Vrana to Hershey. Vrana looked absolutely magical with Kuzy, he'd be having a Burt-like run if he stayed up with the Caps.

Vrana will add so much speed to the bottom 6 in the playoffs, can't wait to see him up in the NHL for the playoffs.

Vrana could use another cup of coffee before the playoffs. Indeed things have changed a ton since he was up.

I have to think Eazy happened upon likely some of the best practices to witness. The behind the scenes transformation of our offense.

I'm just as big of a Vrana fan but can't see how he gets in without th injury bug. Connolly and bura playing to staying in the lineup and playing well. And I don't want Vrana on the 4th line

So we do nothing but let league figure us out?

Not making a move or thinking moves need to be made in summer only are failing methods. Seriously what the hell does GMBM do during the year? Literally seems like nothing at all.

Every Cup winner recently has made some pretty significant moves during a season where a new player has really improved their team. There's a reason Hawks, LA, Pitt, etc aren't afraid to make BIG moves if needed - it's because it's worked for them in the past.

Caps saying they don't think they need to make any trades or make any splashes in-season is just dumb to me and keeps proving to me that GMBM doesn't get it. For a decade now we've had Ovi in his prime and haven't traded a first rd pick to add someone to really better the team. Unreal.

When I watched those practices, I knew something was changing, that they were working on moving the puck around better. I had no idea that they were scrapping the old system and going with something entirely new offensively.

They did go big and add Martin Erat at one TDL.

They need to keep doing this too. Last year we stuck with a system and when another team (Pitt) trumped ours - we were screwed.

Giving teams different looks is never a bad thing. I say keep mixing it up.

I am glad your trip down was rewarded in that way. I have been there countless times and have never seen anything out of the ordinary.... other than Korn and his creative ways. That write up you did, was awesome.

I heard JoeB on local radio this morning, and he said that he thinks TJ Oshie has been our MVP thus far.

I have said it a few times now, and will say it again after Trotz's latest comments. Our deadline move was getting Eller last summer. A 2nd round pick moved is almost synonymous with a deadline move.

When you lead the league in points and have another shot at the president's trophy, it can't be easy to make a big splash at the TDL. I'd be interested to see what kinds of moves teams that have led the league in Ws at the TDL have made. When you've been steam rolling teams like the Caps have, what exactly do you do?

Lose in the first and second rd is what caps do.

For a decade now the Caps won their division or the league like 7 or 8 times. Have always made minor in-season moves - always get same results in playoffs with basically same goals for and against each year in playoffs.

That's a good point. A top team shouldn't need as much as other teams. More desperate teams should be more willing to offer up more and outbid us on anyone BMac is kicking the tires on.

I think in recent years adding players at the deadline, while loudly applauded because we like action, hasn't helped our cause much.

When it's so difficult to find a RW for Ovi, its not easy to add a top 6 type guy that will be guaranteed to fit. When we struggle to find effective pairs, there is no guarantee adding a top 4 is going to cure all that ails us. So maybe its best that deadline adds are lower tier guys that can collect dust until needed.

I understand wanting to give them games, but when you are the best team before that add, giving the new guy games can come at a price. That guy cannot push you over the top, because you are already at the top. He needs to be insurance, not a guy forced into the lineup.

And in the past the years we HAVE made big TDL moves things didn't work out so well either.

Dino/Rouse for Gartner/Murphy ALSO Malarchuk for Johansson- we were leading Patrick division at time of trade and won the Patrick division. End result? 1st round exit (It wasn't until the next year that this trade paid dividends)

Oates/Tocchet/Ranford for Allison/Carter/Carey - missed playoffs

Zednik/Bulis for Zubrus/Linden - We were on a 6 or 7 game winning streak. We finished the season losing 6 of 7. End result - 1st round exit

To act like a "BIG SPLASH" increases chances of success is intellectually dishonest.

Fact is it has a lot more to do with luck/team chemistry/getting hot at the right time and NONE of these things are resolved with a big splash.

It takes time for players to acclimate. Just look at the difference in Winnik from the stretch last year to this year. Look at Eller/Connolly at the beginning of this year to now.

If you make a big change in the team, you are saying that you don't believe in that team. On a smaller scale its like trading Holtby for Carey Price. You are saying that Holtby isn't good enough to get it done.

When the group of players you have on the roster have done all you have asked of them this season and are the best team in the league, how do you sell to them that they are not good enough?

You cant buy yourself out of being the Caps. No matter how juggernaut/murders row this team is, they still carry that weight of being the choking Caps. The Caps need to beat their own rep. Their own history first. I think they win the Cup if they can do that. Adding players wont get that done. It will only add to the weight

We're not soooo much better than the other teams that not beating them is just us flat out choking. Right now a series between the Pens and Caps would be a coin flip, and chances are the Pens will be making moves to increase there odds. God forbid they find a way to move Fluery and get an extra 6 Million in cap space. I'm all for bringing in an extra top 6/9 forward without moving out one of our own guys, and that's highly doable.

Or you're being realistic about just how challenging it is likely to be and believe the benefits outweigh any downside. This is not the first time they've had sustained regular season success. It's not a question of whether they're performing well enough right now collectively but how much better can they continue to get? Is there a roster spot that's already maxed out? Is there a specific roster deficiency that needs to be addressed from a tool or strength standpoint? What do the divisional opposition add to close the gap and how does that in turn put the focus on a specific area of play? The rest is a lot of non-sense I doubt the players or coaching staff ever think about. Certainly Trotz doesn't believe it.

I'm not expecting anything remotely like a Duchene but this may be their very best shot and it would be regrettable if they let it pass without doing all they can. You never know what level of turnover awaits them in the summer, particularly if MacLellan is content letting his free agents test the market without any attempts at a discount until the 11th hour. I'm sure whatever they do won't be flashy but that shouldn't mean nothing at all.

Trotz has a point that players acquired over the summer have an advantage integrating over the course of the season. A Connolly added at the deadline would be way behind the Connolly they have now. There are also some advantages in not making additions that force rotations and disrupt consistency. That's also a big reason why I doubt they start sprinkling in Hershey players unless they absolutely have to. It's true they won't want to disrupt a good thing mostly but there should be room to accentuate it a bit better or at least improve depth. I don't buy it when they say the Hershey options are adequate. They are maybe passable but it's going to take a bit more than that when the intensity gets amplified.

What big splashes did Pitt make last TDL? I honestly can't recall any.

Their "splashes" came during the offseason and early in the season where they were struggling for a playoff spot. Bonino, Kessel, Fehr were brought on in the summer. Hagelin and Daley earlier in the season when they were struggling.

Last year we brought in Williams and Oshie in the offseason. This year Eller and Connolly.

Just b/c we didn't do so at the TDL doesn't mean we didn't make our own "splashes" just in a similar fashion that Pitt did last year.

Thanks for helping make the case that MOJO should be expendable this summer. His 4.5 could be put to better use.

We're still on this mythical scrapping of the whole system? If indeed this HUGE change happened, where's the commentary from anyone following the team? Nothing in the Post, nothing on any post game show mentioning it. Sure some changes have been made that are working for now (that happens a lot over a long season). The league will eventually adjust to any system change, but you can't adjust to players who are simply playing better/really well. This is either the sneakiest system scrapping we've ever seen, the media people following the team are clueless, or this is getting completely overblown on these boards. Nothing from Locker or May, the two guys who can talk technically about systems and things leads me to believe this is being overblown. In fact, if some major changes have occurred, I'd love to hear someone with experience in the league dissect them. Someone tweet those two and stir up a hornets nest!

There are the two moves they made, or splashes. Them happening before the deadline is just silly nitpicking, I'd prefer we acquire a player closer to now rather than on March 1st as well.

So Eller and Connolly don't count? Bonino and Kessel don't count for the Pens? Just because these guys were acquired in the offseason as opposed to 20-30 games in the season?

Who's really nitpicking here?

Why would they talk about their system to the press? If the press can't detect it that doesn't mean it isn't happening. For all they know they're just "playing better" and "going to the net" and "shooting more" and "moving their feet". That and repeating a few buzzwords like "heavy game" that are given to them by the coaches is about all most of them know, or are willing to talk about. Who beyond May ever really gets into Xs and Os?

They DO talk about the weave, though, and they have been since it became obvious that the grinding style of pinning the puck deep was mostly abandoned. The details surrounding and leading up to that may be a little less obvious, and may just be a little too specific for media people/editors to think very interesting for their audience. Not everyone is an HF diehard. ;)

You've got to be kidding me. This is the era of sports over-analysis. This is all some big secret everyone in the press knows about but nobody is talking, or they're too dumb to see changes? May and Locker are plenty knowledgeable to be discussing such a HUGE thing that has seemingly righted the ship in DC. IMO, the best teams simply start to gel around Christmas time and later, but yeah, sure some system tweaks have occurred, but not some large completely new system. It feels like Randy has been screaming about it enough and they're winning, so the groupthink is falling in line.

I want to see technically what's really changed and I'd love to know if people in and around the team give much credit to that, or are they largely just playing better as a group and in some cases as individuals.

If Trotz is simply telling his D to be more active, is that a complete system overhaul?

Back in 2011 I recall a game vs the Ducks when we lost in OT 2-1. That was part of our 8 game losing streak.

At the time I immediately identified we were trapping. (just like the game against the Pens in 07 where Hanlon went to the trap)

A few weeks later on a Q&A someone asked Tarik about something along the lines of the team trapping. Tarik is actually pretty knowledgeable but he was luke warm in his answer.

Sometimes its hard to detect in hockey since its such a fluid fast paced sport. Even something as obvious as a trap.

In football its easy to see if a team is blitzing or just sitting back in a soft zone.
