Acciari hit by Dillon - 5min major (suspended 3 games)

Its fine to suspend for the hit, the problem comes when Dops gives him 3 games, compared to Gallaghers targeted hit giving him 5 games. It makes absolutely no sense, the severity cant even be compared. Parros needs to go
This is also how I see things, and it seems to me that DOPS must see in a way that is completely different. It's so radically different that any explanations they may give wouldn't even help to close the gap.

There is a difference between a player taking the opportunity to injure a player, and the unfortunate combination of circumstance and techniques (both players) that result in an injury we all want to become less frequent. For me, it's like the difference between citing someone for reckless driving (Dillon) vs. intentionally running someone off the road (Gallagher). That distinction is not in their conceptual toolbox.

If they really wanted to avoid head injuries they'd have some sort of baseline standards, like maybe 1 game automatic for hit where there is head contact resulting in injury, no matter how clean and beautiful the hit was. Then 3-5 for hits like this and 10+ games for the downright dirty stuff.

Now you can get 3 games for this and a similar suspension for blindside hit clearly targeting the head or elbowing a guy in the face.

It's not hits like this where I'm baffled with the DoPS, it's the ones that are downright dirty with zero excuses. For those it seems ridiculous you might get off with 1-5 games whereas the player targeted will probably miss more like 10 games (if it was his 1st or 2nd concussion) or possibly have his career ended especially if he has suffered many concussions in the past already.
Couldn't agree more. Rule 48 needs to go. Make it like high sticking. Your sticks hits a guy by accident... Still your penalty. I'm positive all these 'unavoidable' hits will reduce significantly. Just like clutching and grabbing from the dead puck era is gone.

Too extreme. 5'8 player skating with head down should not be immune to contact.

Well, you still don’t get a high sticking penalty if you’re following through on a shot so it’s not all inclusive.

I honestly can’t believe there is so much debate about this hit. The point of contact was 100% all in the head. Was it malicious? No, but you can’t do that. Blaming the guy getting hit for not avoiding it is just par for HFboards.

I agree that what happened there is a penalty by the book, but three games?

I love Acciari, but he puts his head down and goes nose-first into a guy skating perpendicular to him. What is Dillon supposed to do here? Not play hockey?

Thoughts and prayers to Dillon's shoulder. I hope it's okay after the vicious face first assault from Acciairi.

All of the Acciari blaming reeks of “well, what was she wearing?”
Okay, so he should have just allowed the player through to the defensive zone simply because he's diving in head first for absolutely no reason?

Okay so let's make all players skate head forward and they all are immune. Nice, free road to the net.

This is more akin to jumping in front of a car as it's approaching and blaming the driver for not stopping in time, even though there was not enough time to.

DoPS puts out a short video clearly explaining the suspension, some of this debate would clear up if people watched it.

They saw it as an avoidable illegal check to the head. Acairi was bent over for a while and he didn’t make any sudden change in direction/ positioning right before the hit. Dillon hit him squarely in the head, not shoulder/core.

People complain about lack of suspensions but suddenly a suspension for a textbook illegal hit to the head is bad. Ok.

I find these ones very difficult. I 100% support not targetting people's head. At the same time, if I was a coach, I would not only be instructing my player to make that play, I would be expecting it and holding him accountable to it. This isn't throwing an elbow or even a shoulder at a target, it is closing off a lane and being an impediment to forward progress. Pretty text book. The only problem (at least in the brief glance I took) was Noel leaning forward, face first. We've seen it many times.

I always look at NHL suspensions in two distinct ways.

1) Is it justified on its own. In this case hell yeah.

2) Is it in line with previous punishments. It never is because DOPS is a bunch of morons.

As a Jets fan I don't really have a problem with a suspension. He checked him, shoulder to head. The real issue is with the lack of consistency with the DOPS. They are all over the map on their decisions. If this was the standard for a head shot to a player who put himself in a vulnerable position by a player who has a relatively clean record in over 800 games then so be it. That's fine. But it isn't the standard. I have no idea what the standard is, because there isn't one.

C'mon dude. What a childish f***ing comment.
Children need to have things explained to them in childish ways to learn perspective.

If you’re not one of the people that was judging this incident without thinking about their biases and ignoring logic then my comment wasn’t directed at you.

I’d like to see how people react when the shoe is on the other foot.
