Scott Wheeler has a lengthy article on Raty in the Athletic (paywall). Here's his conclusion:

I expect him to become a solid 40 to 50-point player (dependent on linemates and luck, obviously) in the prime of his career if developed properly. That should be what you’re working towards, and I think that can be done with a focus on making it happen down the middle, even if he only tops out as an average skater.

Does anyone know who was Horvat's skating coach, that helped Horvat correct his stride and edge work and increased his pace?

Atu appears to need some training with a skating coach of this calibre.

Kathy McLlwain.

You'd assume the dude has already tried this angle, and if not then that's a bit of a worry as well.

Not many folks have Horvat’s work ethic. Also, much of Horvat’s skating problem was technique rather than ability. He had athletic and powerful legs but choppy strides and wasted movements. From junior to now you can see he’s lengthened his stride quite a bit and generates way more power off his initial push.

There are plenty of skating coaches that NHL teams use all the time.

This magical Horvats skating coach is always brought up when a prospect has skating issues.

If it only was that simple.

He's 20 years old and playing his first season in North America. He now will have access to all the resources he needs to improve, and based on how detailed he is with his game, he will definitely improve his skating.

So a slightly less offensive Bo Horvat who's better defensively?

I'm game.

Pay whatever to get Barb Underhill out to the Westcoast and have a bunch of our players work with her.

Early returns on Raty pretty much as advertised. He's got some creativity and works well with his wingers. And he does find himself in scoring areas a lot of times.

But even at the AHL level you can see that he needs to pick up a step on his skating. He really can't separate himself from his checker. He's still only 20--so that could still happen.

But I guess the bottom line is this any time a player falls into the second round of the draft, there's bound to be holes in his game to work on. And he's in the right place in Abbotsford to work on them.

If he's got any work ethic at all he will become a good skater. Has long legs and good edges just needs more power and to lengthen out a little bit of a choppy stride.

it's really in his hands. I expect he will be just what were expecting Filip Chytil lol

Yeah but he's only in his first year in North America, and they don't have skating in europe.
Am from europe.

Can confirm this.

Well, yes, that's because they don't have skating. Skating is a byproduct of freedom.
This is not true.

I am mandated by my socialist dictator leaders to write this response.

Having a very poor start to his Canucks career - I actually watched him live a week ago and there were flashes of potential but as many have commented man does he need to improve his skating. Always behind the play and more or less neutralized by his foot speed (or lack thereof). On the plus side I thought he was good defensively and was responsible and aware of his duties as a centre.

He's honestly looking like a long-term project right now.

People were pencilling him into the 3C role in the NHL next year and frankly he looks nowhere close to that and looks like he'll need substantially more AHL seasoning.

I'm not going to look too much into things this season. Next season is going to be telling though. Will he have a good offseason and come back a little stronger/quicker? Does he solidify himself as a legit top 6 player next year, or does he just kind of stagnate? Seems to have the defensive awareness to become an NHLer, but if he doesn't start to show some advancement in other areas of his game by say, xmas, it will be pretty disappointing and not a good indicator of future success.
