I will gladly listen to leah hextall over joe buck, jack edwards, mike emrick, chip caray, and ed olyck.

Yeah she is absolutely awful and really does make the experience worse. That said, at least she's not doing PBP this year(I hope anyway), between the glass is a lot easier to listen to.

It was so annoying this summer when the story came about sexist hate and all that stuff. Like I get it, some shitheads clearly crossed a line with personal threats and sexist stuff, but the reality is she just isn't very good at her job. Nothing to do with being a women for 99% of people that dislike her, she's simply bad at her job and doesn't understand the game of hockey. Case in point of her not even knowing what a delay of game penalty is tonight. Plenty of Male commentators get plenty of hate as well for being awful. Jack Edwards gets plenty of hate, Pierre McGuire is apparently quite disliked.

There was a partial schedule posted earlier today that had her doing pbp for i believe a Nashville game

She's reduced to a Jar Jar Binks level of annoyance.
Ah yes, the inclusive community of Star Wars where new actors are always welcomed and treated fairly.

I love Star Wars but the fans are the f***ing worst when it comes to these things. Some actors got the worst of it.

Star Wars fans do have issues with new actors, but Jar Jar Binks issue is something else completely lol. He’s actually a pretty good comparison for Leah

Once you realize its literally only HF nerds and eternally grumpy twitter warriors that complain about her, you'll realize shes not bad at all and its all in your head.
What other large demographics (by the hundreds of thousands) of hockey fans are you taking into account that we aren't aware of?

I knew that was coming lol. I keep hearing that argument and it's complete bullshit.

The fans found the character so annoying it transferred to hating the actor.

Leah is more than fine in between the benches.

It’s only when she does play by play that I think she’s a rough listen. It’s because how shrieky her voice gets when she calls a goal or a big save or something exciting happening in the game.

I thought hating the actor had to do with people finding the character racist or stereotypical of a specific country/ethnicity and he was associated with it (like blaming him for going with it)? Or because the character was just bad and they stupidly blamed the actor. He wasn’t crapped on because he was black and they didn’t want a black actor, at least from what I remembered

I don’t follow Star Wars or their fans super closely, idk what it was with the recent guy; because a main character was black? Or was it because they were hinting he was gay? Or was it because they hinted he was but then made him not gay? I honestly don’t know how people get so invested in that shit lol. Idk what was his issue with the company or what fans issue was with him.

Jar Jar Binks was extremely grating and idiotic tho, he was an attempt at comedic relief that probably was liked by kids more than adults at the time

Edit I re read your post and I don’t know what we’re disagreeing about, but yea I feel jar jar Binks hate was different. Not sure where Leah is factoring in any more lol

I had the game in the background and the only time I noticed her was when the stick went into the box. Was entertaining, I don't see the problem with her.

We're actually on the same page haha.

Some SW fans are just idiots because they cannot differentiate between hating a character/actor or critize the guys who wrote the script. In case of Jar Jar it was a bad decision by the directors although I've never found him annoying and I actually like the fictitious lore around him being a Sith Lord but that's personal preference. I'd take the stupidest role on SW if I had the chance. Resorting to hating the actor/actress is piss poor human behaviour.

The other actress you mention, I guess you mean Kelly Tran? Again, this was a bad script decision but she got so much hate for her role as Rose (t'was the name of her character iirc), it was unbelievable. I'd consider myself a really big SW fan and thought the character she played didn't add a single ounce of quality to the movie but do I end up sending her death threats? f*** no but some "fans" did.

Sorry if my initial post came across as salty but I had some heated discussions about this topic already.

Enjoy your day.

Her voice just isn't very dynamic which makes her not great for a national broadcast. She probably needed a few years of regional broadcasting to really figure out her bread and butter "Leah-isms" to describe situations faster and more routinely.

pray that some no-name girl doing games in the NCH or something is really really good and knows what she's actually talking about and has a good voice, boys, cause it's only a matter of time before they bring her back upstairs if there isn't enough waymen in a broadcast. This is them giving her a training arc for 4 games before she's back, calling it now.

If I was going to be positive about her performance I'd say she looked pretty halloweeny, like a evil henchman from Austin Powers.

I know Leah from her 2 years in Boston and she is an EXCELLENT rinkside reporter

If you listen to her tapes her play-by-play skills are good BUT she doesn't have the vocal cords to rise above crowd noise.

It really do be interesting how people out themselves.

Like, outside of a Don Cherry trademark suit, male broadcasters don't get judged on how they look no matter how good or bad their PBP work is, unless it's extraordinary like Burke's hedgehog hairstyle.

For minorities it's rarely ever just how good or bad they are in their fields, always having to be judged additionally on what they look like or what they do outside of just the job they perform.

Leah isn't perfect but there are other broadcasters who are male and suck just as much in their own ways and get way less flack and have been on the air for so much longer, and definitely don't get shit on for extracurricular details such as how they look.

I think if a male commentator came in in October with a distinct goth look it would get a comment lol

Also amongst caps fans, Joe B’s suit of the night is a thing, and it’s not a Don Cherry thing. Dudes legit super stylish lol

Most just dress within the range of “plain” or “normal” for sports broadcasting which wouldn’t get much of a comment

October, when it's basically "Halloween the Month", where women (especially) like to dress in accordance with the holiday?

Or is it because men generally are expected to dress blandly? Blue, grey, black, white with a dash of red or something colourful... But not too colourful because that could imply something like having personality or individuality.

Isn't discussing Leah's work ability enough without including what she looks like?

Basically, considering there's probably around 100 major broadcast personalities from local to national broadcasts, the disproportionate dislike for Hextall and Cassie Campbell is noticeable to say the least.
Not saying the ladies are perfect at what they do, but the negativity surrounding their performances is vastly disproportionate versus the men who are entrenched in their positions and in some cases are just as bad and also don't have to deal with additional commentary about how they look, for example.

I’m not criticizing her, I’m just saying it would get a comment. It’s not necessarily “outing” the last poster you quoted that he acknowledged her Halloween vibes in a seemingly positive manner (it obviously wasn’t his main purpose here, but I didn’t read that as “she’s dumb for acknowledging a fun holiday” unless I misread the tone). You veered off into something else based on that.

Honestly I see way more for Hextall than for Campbell tho I have seen that too, seemed like more before. Maybe there’s something actually there too but I don’t know if I’ve watched her call a game. I know all female commentators don’t get the same hate Hextall gets. Most don’t get nearly as much, Hextall criticism is pretty pervasive online, not just yahoo comments.

I don’t doubt the sexist ones will obviously come out, but it’s oversimplifying and even condescending how some automatically lump anyone and everyone’s criticism of Hextall, and lump criticism of Hextall with criticism of any other women together and brush it all off.

Plenty of people online and in my circle have complained about multiple aspects of her PBP. I’m sure there are sexist people who wouldn’t give her a chance and I’m sure there’s as many white knight types who will go out of their way not to acknowledge any criticisms of her

Oh, I'd say the tone and wording of the post I originally quoted was already pretty crappy. I just bolded the most obvious part.

For sure the overall post wasn’t positive, about her Halloween vibes that was a throw in, but I still read that partmore as him implying an appreciation of fun “but it doesn’t make up for the rest”. Definitely pissy just not a criticism of her look lol.

Miscommunication to some extent
