I said nothing whatsoever about "handing" things to anyone.

It sounds like you're a survival-of-the-fittest enthusiast, as regards human societies. Some of us prefer a more humane approach to societies. It's just a different perspective.
Survival of the fittest is more humane than the "humane" approach in the long run, since in times of crisis competency is actually incredibly important.

You must have a sub zero understanding of hockey if the commentator even matters in the slightest to you. Do you need them to narrate every move on the ice for you, otherwise you won't understand?

She's done a great job in my opinion.

This is like saying you have zero understanding of sports if you don't like having Anderson Cooper as an anchor on TSN.

Yuck, I knew exactly why this thread looked so long so I was avoiding it but after browsing the last two pages the finger wagging is worse than I thought. I've never heard Leah Hextall so I have no idea but Cassie Campbell is easily the worst colour announcer I've ever heard. Am I not allowed to say that now without being accused of something?

Well, first off, I'd probably accuse you of being a Canadian becuase of how you spelled 'color', but that's neither here nor there.

I think if you just come in and say that you listened to Hextall/Campbell call and game and didn't enjoy it, you shouldn't get too much pushback.

But there are definitely folks who are up in arms, going on about how it's a disgrace to hire a female when there are more qualified men. For me, that falls a bit flat when there are plenty of male announcers who suck at their jobs, but these same people aren't up in arms about those guys.

I don't care that she's a woman, she is inexperienced and lacks energy to be good right now, but that doesn't mean she can't improve. Of course, NHL is male hockey, and 99.99% of commentators before her have been men, so she will be judged by the fact that she is a woman. It can't be easy trying to break into such a male dominated area, so for that reason she has my sympathy. However a lot of the criticism in this thread is valid, we can't give her a free pass because that's not fair either. Mediocrity can't be ignored and shouldn't be dismissed as sexism. Some people are not cut out for commentating, I would be terrible at it and have just as much hate as her if not more.

Some people will unfortunately be sexist, but that should not be an excuse to accept terrible casting. No need to rush a hire for the sake of diversity. It's like putting a 16 year old on a first line in the NHL, they wouldn't be ready and nobody would expect them to perform well. Have her cast games in some lower level leagues for a few seasons and go from there.

I mean she's still not very good, so there's still stuff to talk about.

Jack Edwards still gets threads every now and then due to how ridiculous he is
Leah is brutal but I would honestly take her over Jack f***ing Edwards any day of the week that guy I just cannot stand when its a bruins vs habs game.

Steven Wright doing play by play and people saying stop picking on him it's not his fault he has curly hair.

I caught some of that Ducks/Coyotes game she was doing, the Shattenkirk goal call sounded hilarious..like actively trying to sound like an SNL skit or something. That is all I can add to this thread.

I'll give her pass. More I hear of her, more I like her. She seems to know what is going on imo. I bet some "old school" turds just dont like to hear woman voice during game.
