Jim Hughson has a high voice? To me it is more low monotone. I am in the middle with him, don't love him, don't hate him.
I think he’s confusing yelling with a “high and stiff voice”

It's partly directed at you and partly directed at the discussion going on earlier with The Panther, I thought we were continuing that line of discussion. Apologies if I confused you. To him it seems as though we should give priority to people that belong to a group that's been historically at a disadvantage when hiring. That would mean we're just trying to equalize the end results when instead we should be trying to equalize the path to that result, if that makes sense. By forcing equal outcomes you're discriminating against certain people, and two wrongs don't make a right. I believe you agree with me there. You talk about how the path each person takes to reach their goals can be easier or harder or have more obstacles. I think we both agree that we should be trying to remove those obstacles instead of simply acknowledging them and then trying to "make up for it" by giving them priority in the hiring process.

But I am acknowledging it, I just disagree with the methods that people are putting forth to solve it. More discrimination to fight discrimination is self-defeating.
Agreed. But hiring based on non representation is about equalizing things once there is more representation less priority hiring. Hextall is about the barrier women aren’t represented. So now a barrier is addressed and in future can be more about qualifications.
Also the 15 year eg what if the man with 5 years spent 10 years caring for a loved one and the field is health care. Isn’t there some advantage to multiple perspective than just grades. Just 15 years in same job. Don’t get me on the topic of school and the flaws of it often just being memorizing and regurgitation. So there are other qualifications experiences that may prepare more than just on job and school.
Also the travelling may provide more an education on the international market, business practices that can be applied etc.

Versus just time in same job. Also travelling can give a perspective on international market, different business practices can incorporate.

Nobody is equal. The sooner you get past that realization, the sooner you will get beyond the discrimination that you are espousing.

What, who am I discriminating against?
Also it’s not about people being equal it’s about equal opportunities.

If you are promoting anyone based on sex, gender, race, or sexual orientation you are discriminating against those who do not fall into your guidelines. Just as if you wouldn't hire someone for those reasons. Clear now?

Ignoring your blatant bigotry in hiring, do you seriously think these rich businesses care about representation? All they care about is keeping the money flowing, while pitting regular people against each other so they don't fight against the system that keeps them down.

Hextall was hired because some board members at ESPN decided they needed some good PR when they joined up with the NHL. They ignored qualified job seekers and choose someone with no experience, over even experienced women. The answer why is obvious, they know she's a terrible broadcaster (is it debatable?) and that people will hate on her because of that. They can respond by saying it's sexism and put the heat on those who voiced their opinions. No loud voice would remain criticizing ESPN, but instead people cancelling other people. As long as people keep subscribing to the NHL network and leave the TV on during commercials through cable, there is no reason for ESPN to replace her.

What system are you referring to capitalism? I am in favour of looking at other qualifications other than just grades and work experience. It wasn’t so much about the hextall as a theoritical I was responding to.
We’ll only break the system as you say by taking a more holistic approach to candidates. Everyone from a unique background enriches the workplace with a different point of view.
diverse walk of life. That I think representative hiring is a good way to break down the system, men’s clubs have led to many jobs and once there is a more diverse workplace the better.people have if we don’t overfocus on the flaws of grades which have their own historical bias and a certain path and encourage diversity.

So if there are two equally qualified candidates you can’t try to hire for diversity? That having as many different perspectives doesn’t lead to better decisions?

In my opinion no one is equal. We are all unique humans. You can be better or you can be worse. That's all.

Yuck, I knew exactly why this thread looked so long so I was avoiding it but after browsing the last two pages the finger wagging is worse than I thought. I've never heard Leah Hextall so I have no idea but Cassie Campbell is easily the worst colour announcer I've ever heard. Am I not allowed to say that now without being accused of something?

Incidentally, some demographics don't get treated equally.

So accepting the inequality of treatment of others usually comes from a point of privilege. Especially when trying to make a false equivalence of discrimination.

And I'll respond with the fact that demographics are racist.

No. Discrimination is discrimination. If you want to to say it's okay to to promote based on criteria you define based on race gender or sexual us<ser

Everyone has a unique background regardless of what they look like, why do you put people into set groups and see diversity as skin color or gender? Hire the most qualified people, don't put people down who worked hard just because of your bigoted views. I would get angry if I ever found out I lost out on a career I worked hard for, because the person hiring was you.

Also again, anyone saying "unique background enriches the workplace with a different point of view" is PR speak. Because an actual large business owner like ESPN wants people who don't speak out, work overtime, never call out and never bring up unions. In other words, another brick in the wall. You're clearly speaking from a management or hiring perspective from a small business where the above means nothing.
