JT has 22 pts in 30 games as a leaf (not counting the game against MTL) in the playiffs.

To go from ppg in the reg season to ~60 pt player in the playoffs is a huge drop off.

He isnt worth 11M in the reg, and in the playoffs he falls off to a decent 2C
Now do 34

Where does JT get his points? He is slow of
Foot. Yes he is elite level smart but he doesn’t do the things we need him to do like going to the dirty areas. At this point he is a LW that can fill in at C if needed and will play even strength and PP. Another 11 million dollar winger essentially.
He is still one of the best forwards on the boards in the league in winning or controlling pucks.

The cap will be a bigger issue when 34 and 88's news deal kick in. Unless we move one or more of the 3 amigos, or LTIR JT, another possible solution is to get Johnny to agree to a trade to Arizona after July 2, 2024 with the promise we will resign him July 1, 2025. Leafs pay JT's bonus on July 1, 2024 and he is owed less than $1m in base salary while Zona gets the $11m cap hit.

Interesting! Wonder if we could do it for 2023 - pay his bonus then trade him plus $10M cash for a pick or two. Vegas would only be out $1M or less each season, we free up cap space, and resigning him for $1M for 2025-6 lets him retire as a Leaf (and possibly win a Cup then).

Can’t trade cash and the rest is the fanciful wanderings of fantasy gm’ing. Why in gods name would JT do that? He’s a real person, not a line of coding.

I'm sure you're right - you used to be able to, but not in the cap era.

JT might be willing to do it if he really cared about the Leafs, and wanted the chance to win a Cup here (without giving up most of his paychecks).

Just idle speculation in the dog days of summer.

That wouldn't have been a decision Dubas could have made himself.

It's pretty unbelievable they torpedoed the team that fast.

A lack of foresight is an indictment on everyone who sat at that table and decided there was a shortcut to success.
Tavares rushed the rebuild.

You dont UFA splash when you dont know what kind of team you have or when your core isnt signed.

Florida steamrolled the Leafs, Vegas steamrolled Florida, Leaf’s would’ve been out in 3 if it were possible
Pretty much every single person I know stated the same thing....You could see pretty quickly that Vegas was way out of our league and we would have got stomped had we made it that far.

If we could learn to start diving properly, circumventing the cap and punching players in the head for fun then I feel we could really go the distance
If thats what it takes and other teams are doing it then whats the problem....do it. Complaining about other teams not playing fair is not helping.

Imagine the folks who take this seriously?

people actually think a perfectly healthy Tavares would agree to this nonsense?

I’m predicting JT scores 150+ points over the next 2 seasons… then signs a team friendly contract under $2 million.

the haters will continue to hate.
Nobody hates Tavares....most think quite highly of him from what I see on here. His contract and ev production are not great for a team so top heavy and with so little room to navigate. We can all see his slow decline and it just heightens everything. Like how the fck is this team gonna be able to move forward with a real shot at the cup. Not sure they can the way things are structured. When looking at all the top guys, for better or worse Tavares contract sticks out like a sore thumb. But I digress...we have him for 2 more yrs at that cap whether we like it or not so just utilize him the best we can and thats that. whatya gonna do?

Don't blame Tavares - Dubas tried to rush the rebuild by signing him.
^

That signing is what doomed this team for the past 5 years. For whatever reason Dubas took Matthews and Marner to negotiate with Tavares, like they were apart of management or something. Both guys said they won't sign til after Tavares signs because they want the same money. Just a dumb decision all around, don't think I've ever seen that before.

He inherited Matthews/Nylander/Marner as RFA's and butchered the roster with bad deals.

Since 17-18 regular to playoffs:

Marner 1.15 to 0.98 - drop of 17
Matthews 1.19 to 0.89 - drop of 30
Nylander 0.85 to 0.82 - drop of 3
Tavares 0.98 to 0.71 - drop of 27
Is all I'm saying, everyone rags on Mitch and while he may deserve some of it, the other guy beats them all in slugaciousness, Mitch doesn't lose quite as much of his shine.

I like Tavares. Loved the signing. Ultimately though, we can allocate those resources elsewhere. I will say this, if he manages to close out his contract here being a point per game player that won't be so bad either. I can see him coming back for significantly less to close out his career.

Fans have no idea how hard it is to win the Cup. He had some solid looks against the Panthers and was pretty dangerous, but he just couldn't convert like the rest of the team. It happens.

I don't think it would be that difficult trading Tavares personally. A lot of teams would be looking for a point per game center. At one point people thought Phaneuf was untradeable, even David Clarkson.

Absolutely. Matty and JT didn't perform anywhere near their regular season rate, Mitch not as far off, and Willy hardly at all.

Matthews was our best player against Tampa. 5 goals and 9 points, had a point in the first two games of the Florida series then hurt his hand in game 3 and went scoreless after that. He was also playing really solid defense too. If you only watched the last 3 games of the playoffs then I could see how you would view this assessment of yours as the truth.

LTIR him for the season.

Boom we get an awesome 3C in the playoffs.

It is gross negligence if you are a GM and not using the LTIR loophole to "play within the rules" (legally cheat)

And who fills the giant gaping hole at 2nd line center?

I prefer the other Vegas style solution (MAF) where we tell him thanks for your time and interest, now GTFO.

I know it can’t happen, but one can dream

Well tavaras is the only core 4 to get his raise legitimately
I Harbour no hard feelings towards him
But if we run back a core 3 post tavaras contract at upwards of 35 million.
Well that's just insane
