I still can't wrap my head around the notion that a professional player would willingly sit out an entire regular season, especially one perfectly healthy, to help out a team's cap situation.

If we could learn to start diving properly, circumventing the cap and punching players in the head for fun then I feel we could really go the distance
You’re catching on to the playoff thing. Now the players just need to figure it out.
Also, keep Keefe away the PP or it’s all for naught.

It's a tall order, to expect this player to help any team in the playoffs. Playoff success requires a couple more gears. JT is a regular season player, nothing more..

We need to convince him to retire. Dubad is an idiot and we need rid oursleves of the horrible idea that Tavares is a captain.

Every big market team should consistently use the year-long-ltir-but-miraculously-back-for-playoffs strategy if they can make the playoffs.

Florida proved it yet again -- just make it.

LTIR him for the season.

Boom we get an awesome 3C in the playoffs.

It is gross negligence if you are a GM and not using the LTIR loophole to "play within the rules" (legally cheat)

To go through LTIR you have to get past medical criteria vetted by the NHL. It's not that easy to con the system.

With an 8 month recovery?

It’s not his personality, it’s not his lack of speed, it’s not his inability to play in his own end, it’s his AAV.

111 points won VGK its division and conference, whereas that same total garnered Toronto a distant 2nd place in the Atlantic and a finish lower than that in the East. This is a case of different teams having to go through different paths in order to succeed.
Vegas would have still made it to the Finals and won! Enough of the excuses for this team, they have failed for 5 consecutive seasons with these 4 core forwards, 7 consecutive with AM, MM, and Nylander. It would be a different story had they won a few rounds along the way, but they have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that they cannot get it done when it matters the most.

The only thing you can do is ask him to waive his NMC. There is no fooling the system here.
Treliving didn’t sign Tavares and has no attachment to his signing or responsibility in the vision that brought him here. It’s straight up telling Tavares we need money to sign this and this and we are going in another direction. If he says no, all you can do is suck it up for 2 years.

not sure what is crazier, thinking a PPG C is a 3C or thinking you can just LTIR someone for fun.

If someone got injured and we can time it for game 1, I hope we do but we can't just do it because we want to.
JT has 22 pts in 30 games as a leaf (not counting the game against MTL) in the playiffs.

To go from ppg in the reg season to ~60 pt player in the playoffs is a huge drop off.

He isnt worth 11M in the reg, and in the playoffs he falls off to a decent 2C

More than he is now? Scary thought.
Just a little trivia question.
Where do you think this scary bad centre who was near league leader in faceoffs finished for goals from the centre position? True centre so not including Willy, Verhaeghe, Nugent Hopkins types.

JT was 11th
points he was 15th

For those painting Tavares as a bad player you are incorrect.
Bad contract and bad players are very different.

I suggest last summer Matt Murray should be put on LTIR and ice all year and I'm going to suggest the same thing again this year.

But at least there are and were valid reasons why this might fly in the eyes of the NHL due to his history.

You can't put healthy players on LTIR simply to cover up GM mistakes.

It may be a huge drop off but PPs and goals go way down in the playoffs, as well as the calibre of players you are playing against goes way up.

It stands to reason you point production will reflect this.

I wasn't necessarily arguing either for or against this point. Rather, I was intending to suggest that Toronto doing with Tavares and LTIR what VGK did with Stone - if one in fact believes anything truly nefarious took place within the latter scenario - isn't likely to result in a similar outcome unless one believes the two teams are essentially of equal calibre otherwise.

"Passed all tests thread" will live on forever as the best thread ever on this board.

Now that we know the ending its even better still.
Resurrect it.
We never see that poor kid who started it anymore. I think that thread broke him

so still not a 3C which is what was said...

Matthew Tkachuk becomes a low-end first-line winger in the playoffs based on how you evaluate players.

Without the 2 series of him playing really well, I bet he looks more like a decent 2nd liner.

We know Tavares is overpaid by about 2 million (maybe more).

It’s fine when Vegas and Tampa do it, but the second we do something like that we’ll get screwed. Especially with all of the media attention, hate from other fanbases, and Bettman etc.

I’m positive the reason the Leafs didn’t do something similar with Muzzin in 21-22 is because of how big a scandal it would be and how quickly the league would move to change the rules. This is the same league and media ecosystem where Matthews and Bunting got day of hearing announcements and the Leafs playing an ATO goalie for a minute as a feel good story was scrutinized.

Muzzin LTIR was just mismanaged by the previous management staff. I’m sure his medical history would have justified everything considering he wasn’t even healthy for camp fitness testing on day one and suffered a career ender 4 games in.
