Random question, does anyone else have hobbies with no practical value but just want to pursue for their own sake?

Like I kind of want to learn to play bass, with no intention of joining a band or performing at all. I also want to learn German again, but have no plans to travel there.

It's more for intellectual stimulation and whatnot.

If it makes you happy and isn't hurting anyone else...why not?

My only real hobby is crochet, which does have practical value to an extent, but I just picked it up for enjoyment.

I would love to relearn Gregg shorthand but that would serve a practical purpose at work lol.

I wouldn't mind learning another language although I have zero plans to travel anywhere. But I don't see myself putting in the time required to do so.

Intellectual stimulation is never a bad thing. Go for it :)

Guitar and bass, never intend to play for anyone but me. When I was younger, I learned to pick locks purely as an intellectual exercise. Used it only once, when a coworker locked himself out of his office.

I would say your own enjoyment or intellectual stimulation is indeed, value.

Snow brings out the worst in humanity. I ran to Whole Foods earlier and the number of people I saw that made zero effort to clear the snow off their cars was astounding.

And my asshole neighbor (huge asshole) pulled his car into the middle of the clear street to clean off his car.

I HATE PEOPLE SO MUCH.
I'm always amazed at the people who drive looking through a little spot they cleared, as well as the idiots who plow their driveway across the road leaving mounds of snow in the road

Why bass? Just curious. I'm learning guitar. I set personal goals to try and learn new hobbies and see what I develop an interest in.

I love building cabinets for no reason other than it’s pleasing to me.

Listening to music I like I find myself more jamming along to the bass line than guitar lately.

If I had all the time in the world I'd also learn guitar and possibly violin. I played saxophone through school and got good at it, though don't have an outlet for it. I have dabbled with piano and guitar in the past but never got fluent on either.

Makes sense. I've been thinking about picking up a cheap bass as well. I'm enjoying guitar. Trying to learn how to play golf as well. That's been less fun.

I spend so much money on bird seed each month...I even bought the birds safflower seeds for Christmas.... trying to train them to eat out of my hand....
We love the birds too. I am trying to train the chickadees, it works along the trails but I haven't had success at home yet. Also Nuthatches!

Bass is fun. Different, but fun. Get a ukulele too. Maybe the most fun of all. George Harrison thought it was.

you can see some of my feeders in the background right.

one of the best things I have for them is the heated bird bath on the deck rail. This time of year they still need liquid water. It draws tons of birds every day. Usually go through 1/2 gallon a day of fresh water.

I also have 3 suet feeders out there.
