It's only slightly off topic. There's a good chance that Nate will be playing on a line with any of those guys. And they're likely better than any of the other forwards on Brandon.

He's a year older than I thought, he turns 20 before the draft. So probably a later pick.

Portland is so stacked, I don't see how Danielson fits in. I still maintain that they traded for him as more of a shutdown role than to add more scoring, which they have plenty of already. We'll find out next week, I guess.

Danielson should be in a top 6 role, dude. I wouldn't be surprised if he scores at a 90+ point pace in Portland and several posters here do an about face on their Danielson takes.

For what they gave up he's going to be 2c but that line will play as many minutes as the first line.

I'm interested to see what he does on a more offensively minded team.

Let us recap the trade debate from earlier in this thread. LOL

Shutdown role doesn't necessarily mean a lower line. Larkin's been playing that role in close games almost his entire Wings career.

A shutdown role in the Dub with a top 10 draft profile on the best offensive team in the league? Darn, guess he will only be around 1.25-1.5 points per game for the rest of the year instead of 1.5+.

A shutdown role for a wagon of a team in major junior is a glorified way of saying "doesn't need to play defense" as opposed to "defensive stalwart".

Maybe Portland wants him to be a shutdown guy, but with the quality of talent around him, I would imagine that his line owns the puck more than they did in Brandon, which should only help his offensive chances.

With the talent in Portland, and it being major junior, "shut down guy" means "Coach nicely asks him to back check a few times a game".

I'm taking it more as a guy that can protect a lead at the end of a playoff game. Danielson always backchecks, that really isn't an issue.

It's like throwing Larkin out there at the end of the game with Copp and/or Raz. I don't know why people took that comment negatively, Bedard seems to think highly of Danielson's defensive skills, and that kid knows more about hockey than I do.

Because that's not a "shut down guy". Shut down guys in hockey are defense-first players. Their job is to kill the clock, preferably in the neutral zone by gumming it up and making it difficult for the opposition to cleanly move the puck through, or in the offensive zone by grinding it out along the boards. Their purpose is to make the opponent waste a shift.

Kris Draper was a shutdown guy.
Zetterberg was an all situations guy.

Guess which player Danielson's Portland deployment will be more like.

Just got off the phone with portland’s coach. Told me he’s having Nate watch a lot of Glendening film.

"All situation guy" doesn't adequately describe kids in juniors. Draper was an "all situation guy" in the OHL averaging over 1.5 PPG. So was Helm in the WHL, with stats actually really similar to Danielson in his D+1 season. He lead his team in points.

Semantics aside, I expect Danielson to be the primary penalty killer and be on the ice at the end of games protecting the lead. Not sure where he fits into the power play, I might have to go to the Everett game in February. Kent is too far away for me, but they're playing the T-Birds again on the 3rd.

If Danielson can play on a team where he doesn't have to worry about covering the entire sheet of ice, and has support from his linemates, he'll likely score at a 100+ point pace.

Portland likely has 29 games left after Danielson starts playing. Danielson is currently at 12g 14a. I wouldn't be surprised to see him end up at 70 points by the end of the season.

Hopefully playing in Portland, with something to play for, wakes him up and we can see what he's capable of.

I would hope for a D+1 top10 pick on a decent team to score at a 2 ppg pace in the WHL.

Danielson is playing 2C tonight, and looks like his line is starting.

The usual 2C, O’Brien, is scratched. Presumably injured, so it’ll be interesting to see where Danielson plays when he gets back.
