Matthews' hockey sense is blowing McDavid's out of the water. If Connor didn't have these pretty, but fruitless rushes, he would honestly be considered the worst player on the ice.

So if he wasn't himself he would be the worst player on the ice? Huh? :help:

Speaking of "hockey sense," Gaudreau seems to have lost his.

All these people dismissing Russia and saying they got lucky:shakehead

Goaltenders are part of the team. Russia just has way more talent in goal than NA. Yes the NA forwards outplayed the Russians by quite a bit. But Bob outplayed Murray by even more. The Russians were the better team overall tonight.

I often hear people on HF say you don't need an elite goaltender to win the cup. Tonight's game shows why an elite goalie is important.

could not disagree more

mcdcvid Eichel and matthews are just... better..

noticeably better

mackinnon is a good #4 to those 3

How so? McDavid rushing up the ice super fast and not doing anything with it? Eichel holding onto the puck for too long and then falling on his ass when he loses it? During the NHL regular season, sure. During this game? Hell no.

Matthews was good, I'll give you that.

Maclellan should not have been the coach of this team, way too much bias in his decision making. Everyone and their mother knew it should of been the "2nd" unit out there for that 5-3 and yet Maclellan sends out his golden boy along with 3 other kids with 1 NHL season or less under their belts. Then you look at the score sheet and notice McDavid line with 5 more minutes played than any other line... Gaudreau, Mackinnon, and RNH should be leading the forwards in ice time and relied upon to tie the game in dying minutes, not a couple of 19 year old kids.

I dont think Maclellan is anything special as a coach but i dont think it was a mistake putting mcjesus etc out at the end. they created some huge chances and even hit the post. The coach can just do so much and the guys he put out created huge chances the last minute. Just unlucky they didnt score.

Mackinnon best player on the ice from start to finish.

Eichel put together a solid shift after getting pounded by Emelin and made a few nice steals as RUS was coming out of the zone late, but other than that he had a very poor game

Yeah I know Flames fans are up in arms over his PP usage, which I would agree with, but honestly that wasn't the greatest game by Johnny Hockey either, he wasn't very good 5-on-5 today. That whole line with he and Eichel looked out of sync.

Yeah. You could tell he really wanted it, but he needed to use other guys more. No need to go NHL 17 on every play trying to deke guys out. That's probably why his ice was cut here and there. He killed a lot of plays.

He's good on the PP though.

I'm furious that Vincent Trochek didn't see more ice time today (someone had to get his name in here)

Team North America was really good, great speed. It was a case of two teams that had to win to advance to the Semis. Team North America still has a chance, but it will be tough to penetrate the Swedish defense, even with all that speed.

Russia started off shaky, but I liked the way they fought back and played pretty tough. They are going to have to beat Finland to advance, which they haven't done much lately.

Who said Russia got lucky?

ye Eichel was pretty awful all game...
He scored 56 points last season and looked pretty awful at times then aswell. He is still young and needs time to be consistent at nhl level. Nothing wrong with that. Scoring 56 points and not beeing close to his potential yet is damn impressive.

Eichel was bad, Matthews was average, Mcdavid was decent, McKinnon was amazing

Better goalie? Sure. Better team tonight? Nah. Poor game by Oveckhin's standards. Malkin might as well have been in a coma, he wasn't even one of the fifteen best players on the ice.

Gaudreau was amazing at finding some open ice to stickhandle in but couldn't buy himself a shooting lane. Russia shut him down.

It boggles my mind how Matthews had five more mins of ice time than Gaudreau. Should be the other way around.
Actually he had more ice than Nuge, Mak and Scheifele. Poor player management.

Zero right hand shots down low? Probably not going to work well.

MacK on the point would be a bad idea anyways. I don't think I've ever seen him use a slapshot in his career and is more suited to using his strength down low or in front.

Did you even watch how Matthews scored and got a lot of his chances. McDavid could maybe improve goal scoring but the number of chances he creates for linemates is mind blowing.
