I don't question the fact that they took NHL refs, but there are more than a handful of solid American refs out there. I don't want my comment to sound like I'm antagonizing referees in general. All I'm saying is that to me, and dare I say to the vast majority of Europeans, this makes us ask questions about the legitimacy of the umpiring. And even though I feel quite confident that the referees are unbiased, I think it's unfortunate that those questions are even discussed widely in my home country when it is so easily avoided. It's one of those things where a matter of cultural differences is so often perceived to non-North Americans as an expression of Canadian hockey self-centricity.
I think of the soccer World Cup, where they have it as an official policy that no referee is allowed to ref his own team - period.
The question of what country it would be best for the NHL to win is interesting, but I don't think there is any doubt they want a Canada-US final. Which makes the game schedule another instance of something that raises annoying (and by god I hope, unwarranted) questions.
