Not as familiar with import drafts....they only control his rights the moment he plays for them? Since he currently has the option to go back to Sweden...
It's basically the same as NHL draft. If the player wants to play in the CHL, he has to play for the team that owns his rights. It's the same with NHL rights. Even if you are drafted by an NHL team, you only have to play for that team if you choose to play in the NHL. For example, some players that are drafted, choose to play in the KHL instead.

He's a center. Any one who says differently hasn't watched him longer than a 2 minute highlight reel.

"But can he play it in the NHL?!!?!"

I can't think of a more tired retort. The reason that is raise so many times for junior players who are "C"s is because puck dominant scorers often play C because it gets the puck on their sticks more and lets them score more which flat out doesn't work in the NHL unless you're otherworldly. Kasper is literally the antithesis of this. He oozes all the high quality traits you want from a C - 200 ft, selfless, physical, can play in the corners and down low, doesn't hang on just the perimeter, can shoot, looks to pass and set up his teammates, doesn't shy from the body, thrives defensively and is tenacious.

THAT's why we have that stupid "CAN HE PLAYZ CENTER IN THE NHL?" - too many score-only forwards in juniors where they can get away with just doing that and find that the responsibilities of the C are much more serious at the professional level. Kasper does all of it.

I mean, just simplify it even more.

The best way to develop offense is to play the most minutes possible in offensive situations. OHL would provide that.

Playing in the OHL isn't going to make Kasper forget how to play defense or be a smart/responsible player in general, I think that stuff is in his DNA.

It makes plenty of sense to me as well. I'm not going to say that one landing spot is more appropriate than another, but my god do we have a lot of rigid minds and people who give far too much credit to the SHL and Rogle. All of the options have merit. Let's stop acting like the CHL is a terrible developmental league. It still is responsible for the most NHL players produced, with the largest proportion being from the OHL. You can scan the top scorers year to year and find plenty of CHL products. Hell, even JT Miller went from getting drafted out of the USNTDP to the OHL for his D+1 before turning pro. The Rangers seem to have been lost on how to work him in as a full timer, but since about 2016-17, he's produced at a really nice clip that only got ramped up once Vancouver.

Fabian Lysell and Oskar Olausson made the move from SHL last season to the CHL, but I wouldn't say that they were thriving in the SHL.

Probably fair to say that Kasper wasn't "thriving" in the SHL either. And he certainly wasn't thriving as a center. The end of the season was a very notable improvement; if he did that for a year, then yes he would be thriving.

It's quite weird and funny situation.

Kasper is already very well and matured defensively, so maybe they like to put him to ALL-OFFENCE junior league?

With many other players this would feel like a move backwards on his career. But what comes to Kasper, he really hasn't had a chance to be long runs at a team or at level, where he would be the main point-producer. It has always been some minority role and concentrating on development.

This could be very interesting, how Europe-developed product would work at OHL level.

I think... if he goes there, I will be most interested about OHL-season maybe ever.

Rogle should just let him play! I’d rather have him continue to develop against men and play a pro-style game but if the Wings thinks this would be good for his offensive development then ok. Weird sources for these rumors too.

I think we can see he had a very upwards pointing curve in his development, especially in the playoffs.

I'd say he was thriving by the end of the season.

For a 17 year old he did very well. Better than the two I mentioned as moving from SHL to CHL. And Kasper's SHL numbers were the 5th best for a 17 year old in the last 10 years.

I don't think the Redwings would prefer Kasper moving to the OHL versus staying in the SHL with Rogle. They know they have a good developmental staff in Kronwall and Lidstrom that will help guide his development there.

They are confident that Rogle will develop their prospects properly even allowing Wallinder and Niederbach to move there from other clubs.

I'm not buying the 67s rumor. Kasper has said that he wants to return to Rogle. Yzerman, Draper, and Cleary have all alluded to him returning to Rogle. If anybody wants Kasper in North America, he can play in the AHL. It just doesn't make any sense, so I don't buy it.

Wherever Kasper plays next year I sincerely doubt we have to wait long until he is in the Winged Wheel. I forget the exact quote at the draft (had a few ginger ales) but Yzerman talked about how he is close to ready. That’s exciting stuff, especially in the NHL where you’re drafting kids and outside of the top few picks it is normal to wait years until you see a prospect.

The other thing I really like about the Copp signing is it allows Kasper to slot into a role he can thrive in when he is ready whether that is in the fall or next year. I haven’t been this excited about the start of a season in a long time, good stuff.

I agree. I think Kasper spends one more year in SHL and then comes over to either make the team out of camp or spend some time in GR. Depending on how far Rogle gets in their playoffs, he may get some games in GR who "should" make the playoffs this year with a much better team.

I also can't wait for training camp. A lot of hype, for me, after this Free Agent period plus with potentially Edvinsson and Berggren.

With the current roster I don't think Detroit will need to rush Kasper. He could probably play 3rd line in the NHL this season but one more year in the SHL would be very beneficial. 2 wouldn't hurt but I think by his D+2 Kasper takes the Larkin and Raymond route to the NHL.

Stevie signed him fast, so he obviously believes in the kid. Put him in, coach.
