Who has the most consecutive years in the POs? Lidstrom or Bourque ? Sid has to be close.

Lidstrom played 20 seasons in the NHL, all with the Red Wings. He never missed the playoffs.

The Red Wings also made it the year prior to him joining the NHL. And the four years after his retirement. So 25 seasons in a row.

Bourque made it his first 17 years, but the Bruins did not make it in 1996-97.

I can't find anyone else over 16 years.

Larry Robinson was also 20/20.

Is this how it works ? I guess its ironman style.

I don't think you can credit him for making the playoffs in a season where he didn't play a single playoff game. I don't know if this is an official stat that the NHL tracks; maybe their criteria is different from mine.

He played season games though and I think he was eligible for his name on the cup too

I guess it depends on how you look at it. Thinking about the subject just makes me wish we got to see more of Crosby during his prime years. Hell, if he'd have stayed healthy in 2011 and the Pens made a run, he'd probably already be ahead of Anderson and chasing Kurri for #3 in playoff scoring.

What does common sense tell you though?

The Penguins made the playoffs in the 2010-2011 season and he did not play in them. He played in a playoff game on 5/12/10 and didn’t play his next playoff game until 4/11/12. If he played in the 2010 playoffs, did not play in the 2011 playoffs, and played in the 2012 playoffs, how many consecutive playoffs did he play?

It’s not necessary to find every nook and cranny to give Crosby credit for his partial seasons. He’s an all time great regardless and his missed time strangely aids him because his most feverish supporters will tell you that he was a lock to average 1.6+ ppg (hardly the guarantee it is made out to be) and sweep the awards if he didn’t miss 113 out of a possible 212 games.

I can see why you’re confused then if a postseason where he didn’t play counts towards his personal consecutive playoffs streak.
Missing playoffs means a team didn't make them, not that he got injured and couldn't play.

What if he played 82 games and got injured at the last minutes of regular season?
What if he played the first game for a shift and got injured and didn't play that year?

What kind of arbitrary criteria is that ?

  • To have one's name engraved on the Stanley Cup certain requirements must be met. A player must have at least 41 games played with the club or one game played in the Stanley Cup Finals. However, in 1994 a stipulation was added to allow a team to petition the Commissioner for permission to have players' names put on the Cup if extenuating circumstances prevented them from being available to play. (NHL, 2022)
Thanks for playing

The question isn’t if the league finds someone eligible for a Cup. The question pertained to how many consecutive playoffs has Crosby participated in. It’s pretty cut and dry and I won’t be responding after this.

Just curious, what would it take for Crosby to surpass Lemieux as the greatest Penguin player?

Obviously not comparing him to Mario’s role as an owner and franchise savior, that’s a different thing. And not suggesting he’s a “better player”. But in terms of achievements as a Penguin player, what’s the boundary?

- He’s 320 points behind Mario for the franchise record, which certainly seems doable.
- He will almost certainly take the record for assists, though goals might be a challenge (he would need 175 more).
- Already has a large lead for franchise GP.
- Already building on his lead as the team’s longest tenured captain.
- Crosby leads Mario in Cups (3-2) and is tied in Conn Smythes (2-2).
- Mario still has the advantage in Harts (3-2), Rosses (6-2), goalscoring/Richards (3-2). Mario has one more season as a 1st All Star center.

If Crosby wins another Cup with a Conn Smythe attached, does that push him over the top? Or is this more about having another Hart season? Or is it about compiling the career totals? All of the above? Or is it just impossible for him to compete with Mario’s aura?

quite simply, there is nothing Sid can do to ever surpass Mario. Mario is just on another dimension level than every other player in NHL history. The only comparables are Gretzky & Orr. That said, being #4/5 all time is rarified air & Sid has more than delivered on the promise when he came into the league.

Nothing to explain. Malkin's peak performance was better. You can ask Crosby
this is utterly laughable.

Oh, I agree that nobody's likely to rank Sid over Mario in the final analysis. I was thinking more in terms of "on paper" legacy. Kind of like Maurice Richard vs Guy Lafleur... nobody's ever going to unseat Richard as the most beloved Canadien, but in an alternate timeline where Lafleur stays healthy he could have really overshadowed Richard on paper. It's interesting to see Crosby approaching that point, and thinking about where the line would be drawn. Other than Art Rosses, he's within 1 of all Mario's trophies and leads him in Cups. If he were to pick up another couple of awards and then take a lead in career G-A-P (which he will do next season if we acknowledge differences in scoring rates between the two eras), presumably at some point we would start to say that Crosby had the better career.

Well, no.

Mario's peak is something Sid cannot touch. The disparity is so large that I do not think that cumulative accomplishments can make up for it.

On paper sure. Sid could out accomplish 66, but impact & meaning to the logo, not ever. That said, doesn’t detract from Sid what so ever…or Mario for that matter.

I'm the biggest crosby fan there is. But mario is simply just a better player where there is no room for discussion. Which is saying a lot cause crosby is easily the best player in franchise history on every team except for the big fours clubs. Now if crosby wins the cup this season with another smythe. I will give him the title of greatest penguin. But best no lemieux Is a better player period

And then, I know it is not ON THE ICE, but it is very difficult to forget that Mario saved the team as an owner and won 3 more Cups.

It should not count, but, let's be honest, it is a factor.

Mario saved the team as an owner.. sure but what happens if no crosby no malkin?

Oh, I agree with what you are implying. However, Mario saved the team at least 3 times.

- Being drafted there in 1984
- Being the team out of bankruptcy and coming back to the game
- Getting the arena built (this part, Sid and Geno have a lot to do with, without their success, might not be an arena)

It's crazy how underrated Sid has become. I've said it before, but there's still no player in the league I'd take over him in the playoffs
New toy Syndrome. Sure they can score nice goals and do fancy dangles but none of them have proven a thing. Crosby year in and year out has proven why he's the best in clutch moments. From winning the first winter classic to scoring the golden goal in the olympics to winning back to back conn smythe trophies
