Maybe the problem is the PP is overthinking... 6v5 with a goalie pulled you can't afford to overthink because the clock is ticking
You also can’t just pass the puck around with an empty net hoping that the moment to pass the puck directly into the net will arrive. Fing pp that nobody wants to shoot

Which makes the ineptitude of the PP even more maddening.

I think because there's more chaos with two extra skaters on the ice is why the 6v5 succeeds. At 5v4, that is a common practice for many PK units to defend and our PP coach has us playing a static scheme. Listening to Colangelo, he said he has been trying to get to the front of the net on the PP (assuming with the Gulls and Ducks), but he didn't say the coaches emphasize it.

At 4v4 and 3v3, there's also more chaos because there is a lot more room and we usually have the better skaters, especially with Terry along with LaCombe or Zellweger on the ice. Their natural offenses are coming out.

Problem with PP is simple. No one moves. 5 statues are easy to defend. 10 mins watching PP goals in nightly league highlights and its pretty simple. Not just the puck carrier, but good PP have people moving in sync together. Just look at Edm game. Its not just that mcdavid attackes the 4 man box and draws 2 or more defenders to him. The key is not mcdavid. Watch how Draisatl is constantly moving on the back side so that as defenders collapse on mcdavid, he actually moves back and forth in sync to maintain the passing lane so mcdavid can find him.

I actually think the players are following the PP instruction correctly. Outside of 5v4 PP construction and scheme, the other types of play are the players allowed to do their own thing and flow with 6v5, 4v4, 4v3, and 3v3. The one time we scored on a 5v3 was LaCombe doing all the shake and bake to draw in the PK'ers to him while finding Mac in the slot with a no-look pass.

Trouba was also bad.

Hot take: Trouba is ass. I am trying my hardest not to go full Dirk because I do appreciate him blocking shots, but at some point, the dude needs to start living his rep and looking to hit in open ice because no one fears him at all. His gaps through the neutral zone are enormous more often than not

this. and also a lack of a solid net front presence to cause havoc in the crease

Re: the PP

We try and rely too much on the cross ice pass through the slot for a one timer (which is usually McT) over near the left faceoff dot. This rarely works.... because:

1. I think most teams know that's what we like to do.
2. often times the pass is through a crowded slot, and it never gets through.
3. The pass is usually too long and too slow to be effective
4. Most of our players don't do 1 timers well. Sure, McT has his moments, but they are rather few and far between.

The effort is there. Mid-game adjustments are not something this team has shown under this coaching staff.
Effort yes; execution, NO. Game was characterized by fumbling pucks, weak passed across ice that are intercepted, shovel passes to an opponent, passes to a player whose back is turned and not expecting a pass. This is what kills us. They did it ALL right against EDM; but these losses have been literally fumbled away.

The Ducks looked like a team with a lot of young guys who just made it through the TDL.

They played like they were not mentally engaged. It has been a while since the Ducks had such a poor passing night. The puck was being fumbled and constantly missing the mark.

I’m hoping now that the dust has settled and they get a good nights sleep, they’ll play better.

The good news is that his reputation is good enough that we might be able to get a 1st round pick for him at the next deadline (possibly the same with Gudas). The bad news is I’m not sold that we’re going to trade him (or Gudas).

And it makes it twice as bad, in that because we are so static, the penalty killers attack the puck carrier way more often than you would against a normal PP unit, because they know there are no legit passing options. Having the man advantage does you no good if it turns into a 1 v 1 situation for the guy with the puck all the time.
