Something seems off regarding the posted update. Either that or a lot changed in a day.

What I see in the NHL Western Wildcard standings is that the Calgary Flames currently hold the final Wildcard slot. Both Winnipeg and Calgary have played 42 games. And we are Nine (9) points behind them and the last spot. Waaayyy behind them. Not 3 point out.

We are currently holding 13th place in a 16 team conference.

As I understand it, this is the imaginary standings had all teams hit the 41 game mark at the same time. Yes, things have very much changed since then. A more meaningful stat is the Jets record in the last 10 games. 2-6-2. Only 3 teams in the entire league have had a worse stretch in their last 10. Montreal, New Jersey and Philly (who just beat us).

With apologies to The Temptations....

Optimism Huh
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothin'

calgary is only in the last wild card spot because kings/ducks have played 5 and 6 more games then them, calgary will move ahead of those teams once they make up the games unless they go on a losing streak

You need to look at the number of games played because there is such a difference right now. The Kings likely will sit in the last wildcard spot once everyone has played 47 games and they only got to that spot by going 5-0-1 in their last 6 games . That's why the loss to the Flyers was such a kick in the balls.

Before that we could have hypothetically won all 6 of the games in hand and been in a playoff spot so while optimistic, it could be considered to be a bit chicken little to toss in the towel on the season while we were potentially in the playoffs. Now, even if we win all 5 games in hand we're still on the outside looking in with 35 games to go.

Over the last 10 games only the New Jersey Devils have a worse record than us so maybe the allstar break gives everyone a chance to look in the mirror and start the second half of the season with a do over. After losing the first 2 games of the year the Jets had an 8 game point streak, then lost 1 game in a shutout on home ice (ouch) and then had another 5 game point streak so that they collected points in 13 of their previous 14 games (13 out of 16 games overall) and sat first in the central when we were 20% of the way through this season.

From that point to now, basically a total disaster. (8-17-3) A 56 point pace for the season if they did that over an entire 82 games.

We basically need the kind of run we had to start the season to happen again coming out of the allstar break. 5 of our first 7 are at home. We get the Stars (X2), the Flames and the Oilers in February. We still have a home game against the Kings in April if we can fight our way back into the hunt. This time 2 weeks from now will be very telling on if there's any hope left or it's tank city.

After last night all western conference teams have played 10 games since the mid season update. Jets playoff gap moves from 3 points back to 6 points back.

Pacific (pts in games 31-41 in brackets)
Calgary - 68 (18)

Los Angeles - 61 (16)

Central
Colorado - 78 (15)

As of last night all Western conference teams have played 41 games. On the plus side, as bad as things have felt over the past 11 the Jets didn't lose any ground. Realistically though with how LA and Anaheim have played since game 41, an eight or nine game winning streak might still not be enough to get to the playoff line.

Las Vegas - 50 (12)
Calgary - 50 (10)
Edmonton - 47 (11)

It's just tough because we do need Vegas AND Dallas to BOTH go off a cliff.

Vegas is actually looking like it might and we play them twice so there's a chance there.

Dallas has lost 2 in a row and has Heiskanen out with Mono. They play the leaf tomorrow (without Matthews) on the 1st game of a 4 game road trip. That no call on Roberson's cross check on DeMelo late on the game tieing goal still stings so bad. We should have one more point and they should have 2 less. We'd still be 7 points off the pace, which is the point of this thread but had it played out differently us and the Stars would both be sitting here today with 65 points (but the stars would have 3 games in hand so we would still need help)

Sports Club Stats has us up to over 10% chance of making it now, which sounds terrible but our odds have doubled over the last week. We still need that mythical 5+ game win streak to make it even remotely possible. Need a +4 to be in the next box for this next 5 game set so that we can go +1or2 in each of the final 3 5 game sets to make it.

This set is 2 at home against Vegas, 1 at home on friday night against Boston and another at home against Ottawa with a game on the road in Chicago in there. Need to beat Vegas twice anyhow. Should beat Ottawa and Chicago. If we beat Vegas tomorrow friday night tilt agaist the Bruins (without masks) could be rowdy.

We should still sell IMO but I think Perfetti can fill in for Stas and Gus can fill in for Copp so we won't actually lose that much.

Switching from games played to games remaining. Standings are with each team having 15 games remaining. Jets go 4-2 since last update and drop 2 points further back as Dallas goes 5-1. If other teams recent play holds for the final 15 games, both wildcard teams will be from the central having as many or more points than the 2nd place team in the Pacific. Jets would need to go 12-3 in those 15 games and since they are 1-2 already means that pretty much have to win out to have a chance.

I don't know how to make all those great charts @BoJet did ... but I think it's worthy of looking at/acknowledging how the Jets are doing WRT 6 in 5 now that we've reached the 15 game mark.

First 5 games: 2-3-0, 4 pts, -2 on 6 in 5 pace
Second 5 games: 4-0-1, 9 pts, +3 on 6 in 5 pace
Third 5 games: 4-1-0, 8 pts, +2 on 6 in 5 pace

Total = 21 points; 6 in 5 pace = 18

Putting us currently +3 points above the 6 in 5 pace overall to date.

With last night's blow-out of the Blackhawks, another 5 game set has been completed.

19 Nov 3-0 L vs. Pittsburgh
21 Nov 4-3 W vs. Carolina
23 Nov 6-1 L @ Minnesota
25 Nov 5-4 W @ Dallas
27 Nov 7-2 W @ Chicago

3-2, 6 points

So we remain +3 on the season so far for the 6 in 5 pace.

Seems that last year, it was our fourth block of 5 games where the wheels fell off, earning only a single point of the needed 6 that week, then breaking even, getting 5 points, 6, and then another block of five where we only got one point and we never recovered after that.

This season we've now completed five blocks of five games and have consistently gotten the needed six points or more such that we now have 5 points above the 6-in-5 line.

I agree but that kind of thing evolves and the Jets have had there share of stiff competition right here in the Central.
A Central team won the cup in 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, lost it in 2017, won it in 2019, lost it in 2020, in 2021 we had the Canadian division, and won it in 2022.
Arguably the best division for well over a decade.
