Kids are playing well almost top-to-bottom. Igor being the lone exception but I'm not worried about him whatsoever.

I don't get the Trouba bashing. He's been good defensively with Miller and playing with an edge. Not great on the 2nd PP but he was also directly responsible for Strome's goal. Room for improvement? Sure, but hardly a glaring issue.
I think the issue with Trouba is that he was brought in to be the cornerstone D with the contract he is given, and instead we have an average middle-pairing player that has a big shot and some snarl and boat loads of flaws. It's not a good look when he is being outplayed severely by a sophomore player and a rookie 5 games into his career.

It's only been 5 games in with little training camp and no pre-season. Can't expect everyone to be tearing it up now, especially the kids. Igor had been shaky, but I thought they played a pretty solid game last night.

Eh, this is what Trouba has always been. The Rangers bet big on him but that's not really his fault. Blame the pro scouting if you want to.

To get the most out of Trouba you need to pair him with someone that covers his shortcomings and amplifies his strengths. That was Josh Morrisey in Winnipeg and with any luck it'll be K'Andre Miller here.

Outside of the 1st game, they've been good enough.

It's frustrating as shit to watch because the games are there for the taking, and we make a couple boneheaded plays and blow it.

But I think the signs are there.

- The bottom 6 has been great.
- The left side of the defense has been much, much better than I imagined (thanks to Miller)
- Chytil, Kakko, Howden, Fox have all been good to great.

The goaltending has been shit, but that happens.

If the biggest issue is the vets shaking off the rust, we'll be fine.
I think we can say they've been better than just good enough, honestly. Here's how they rank 5v5 if you remove that tire fire from game 1:

CF% and FF% - 6th
SF% - 3rd
GF% - 13th
xGF% - 8th
SCF% - 5th
HDCF% - 7th

14th in shooting%
23rd in 5v5 save%
28th in 5v5 high-danger save%

This is with the caveat that our best players have not been good and that we've gotten some shitty puck luck otherwise. I think the underlying process is there, and I'd expect this team to get back on track once the key players shake off the rust and round back into form.

I'd rather lose like this than get absolutely waxed like we did in AV's last years.

My take on this game:

Laf is trying - I see some hustle and some skill there. He looks like he is still trying to figure stuff out in the big leagues. Very understandable.

Kreider is doing his typical no-show thing. We should be used to it. Honestly, that is what he is at this point in his career. We all hoped for better when he was younger.

Miller- just plain amazing.

Fox - see Miller

Shesty- bad game. Not time to panic. He had trouble tracking the puck all night but still looks quick and technically proficient. Vodka in the water bottle?

Kakko- hope to see more.

Pan/Mika - need to see more. They both seem off. Pan has missed about 5 one-timers wide and soft.

Chytil was flying until the injury. That line and the fourth line looked good.

Fox is amazing. We are lucky.

I remember with the jackets panarin used to snipe some Pucks now he’s either hesitating or missing completely

If you look back to the Oilers dynasty, they kind of lived by the mantra of Fuhr making that ONE last important stop, while the boys would score a zillion goals.

Shesty and Gregoriev have been underwhelming, but when your "god-tier" line has literally done nothing (giving a pass to Laff for now), it makes our weaknesses a lot more apparent. Sure it's nice to have an unstoppable brick wall in net, however Miller has been our best defensive D-man by a country mile, which is a both SUPER positive (I am so hyped on this kid!), but also sad as hell.

It's early. Sure I screamed at my monitor a lot the last few games, but I'm not out of hope yet.

what does Ronney bring, he is the Johnson of the forwards, rather have Gauthier or Barron learning in his spot. and this guy was the top get as a UFA. what a joke. replaced Fast with this guy.

Dude was literally a hart finalist last year while dragging Strome's corpse around. Rangers Panarin>CBJ Panarin thus far. And by the way he had a bunch of snipes last season too if you paid attention.
Relax man I paid plenty attention last year. I've been defending him this year. I'm just saying this year so far he has passed up some great chances and the shots he's taken from his side he's missed the net or fanned on a few.

Ok but why are you comparing him to how he played in CBJ when he was making the same type of plays as a ranger just last season, if not more?

Watched the first 2 periods.
They should have won this one.
Kids played well, but man does Laf look like Kakko from last year.
Terrified about making a mistake or being in a wrong place. He won't go to the corners or play the body because he doesn't want to end up out of play or position. Or that's what I think is happening here.
When both player play their best game in their first career NHL game it just has to be the coaching, that causes the drop off.

Was just comparing his shot/shooting more but I understand he's also trying to get his teammates involved. I love his game and ability to see the ice and slow down play to get his teammates more involved no doubt.

I think it's funny how much less we talk about analytics (what happened to the analytics thread?) when our analytics are good.

I still notice Kakko tapping out literally all the time and it seems like it's way more than anyone else. Maybe because my eyes are specifically drawn to him, but he seems to come off the ice earlier than his teammates a lot. I have nothing to back this up other than my anecdotal observations so anyone with stats can feel free to set me straight, but I want to watch Kakko, so I focus on him... and it sure seems like a significant amount of the time, once he's been removed from the flow of play, he turns and skates to the bench with his stick or hand lifted, without hustle, like he's gassed.

I am left to still wonder about his conditioning.

I've noticed the same that his shifts tend to be extremely short sometimes. Like 15-20 seconds short. He's playing too safe sometimes, which could be a Quinn problem which most predict. Afraid to make a mistake for fear of being benched. He does fall down a lot, but again only 19 years old. Just comes with time that he will get stronger and better on his feet.

I hope the date went well because I stayed home and watched this game and got f***ed.
I don't think i could have been any happier. After work week, Friday and Sunday night Rangers games, knowing full well we are a better team than they are.
Come Monday morning, well u know. 2 losses to hated rival.
They let me/us down.

But, I'm not falling for the chicanery. They have a helluva lot more in their tank than this crap. We WILL get our shit together and the future is still very ROSEY and the best is yet to come. They need to be pissed at themselves, which will be a good start towards recovery, but wont be easy.

The thing is the team has been playing hard after game 1. They're hard to hate because while the forwards are playing like crap, overall the team is playing hard.

For the sake of debate, Laf and KK are both hesitating because they don't want to make mistakes and have their minutes taken away, but on the other hand look at K'Andre, who is going out there and just playing his game and he's getting lots of TOI. Second-most, behind Fox, last night.

Would it be possible that those two can reach their potential and Miller and Fox would still be better players? That blows my mind.
