People who anticipated us making the playoffs probably got ahead of themselves. Without covid, we don't come close last year.
Kreider didn't commit to Quinn's playoffs this year comment to the media.

He's making sure it comes true.

That’s all fine and dandy in a 82 game season. But with a shorten season like this there are no “well they looked good even tho they took the L”. I think a lot of rangers fans anticipated them making the playoffs. If they don’t start winning immediately then it’s disappointing season. Especially with all of this talent.
It’s not “fine and dandy”, it’s great. Their Sh% and Sv% aren’t going to stay like this.

But it’s not the team as a whole at all. Kreider, Mika, Panarin, Strome and Trouba look rusty. Buch, Chytil, PDG, Kakko, Miller and Fox look excellent and better than ever. Everyone else looks about what you’d expect for them minus the goalies.

I really don’t think the coach is responsible for each players individual skills. Most coaches can’t shoot or pass or skate to the level even the worst players on their team can. They can and do run drills etc but a players skills, especially the level they’re at to start the season, are up to them.

I agree with all of this...

However, the coach CAN choose not to play struggling players on special teams, especially when some of those those players have killed your top PP unit.

For someone who came in talking about how he wants the team to be "relentless", there seems to be less and less of that as time goes on. Either his definition of relentless differs from mine, or his team is ignoring him. If its the latter, it's really up to him to fix that.

Theres a ton thats happened this year that isn't his fault (Goalies, posts hit, Strome, Kreider, Mika getting the Vid) but he hasn't helped either. Hes in his third season and I still don't really see a team identity.

The top 6 should be bag skated until they shit their pants.
That was the first thing I was thinking watching that effort last night....PATHETIC effort by a bunch of paid pros . Either they want him fired or they simply don't care about the playoffs .

well i don’t disagree that it’s clapping our playoff hopes but if this is a sign of what’s to come, we’re in for an insanely competitive team

Maybe, but I wouldn't count us out just yet. If the team continues to play the way they have the past 4 games (which is of course no guarantee) then there's no reason we shouldn't make a run at it. We have gotten nothing out of Kreider, Zibanejad, Lafreniere. Our goalies have been below expectations. I know it's a short season and we need to see improvement quickly but I wouldn't expect those players to continue to struggle. If Chytil is out long term that will be a tough loss though with the lack of center depth.

I understand just frustrating. I was hoping we would take that big step toward elite status. Guess I was more hope than most

also wtf is up with our top 6? Especially Kreider. I’ve never seen him play this bad

True. The other logic is that special teams is potentially a good way to get important players going by getting a few points before their struggles really weigh on them, which is prone to happening at the start of a season more than in the middle of one.

I feel like I’m watching different games than some people here. They look pretty relentless to me. They’re on pucks quick in their end, they get them out without being pinned, they hound players in their own zone, they transition quick and often get extended play in the other teams zone. Some guys aren’t in on all phases of that, and some really aren’t finishing or are forcing passes in the o-zone, but overall the team is a hell of a lot closer to “relentless” than they were last year.

We have no clue what they do or what they run. The team has been off. Less than a handful look good. It's obvious there is less emphasis on skills.

We are not even talking about individual skill. We're talking about rudimentary hockey, like passing the puck. Supporting the puck. Zone entry. Nearly nothing is tape2tape. The player rarely receives it cleanly...flubbing at beer leaguer levels etc These are as basic as it gets. If a good majority are struggling with basic hockey skills, they are not prepared. I don't know what else to say.

I joked about it but I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see Laf at Center.

Again, they aren’t outplaying and outpossessing teams with beer league level skills. This is a dramatic overstatement of what’s happening

not a fan of so many drop passes around center ice to the trailor. It’s too easy to defend.

We established that.....

but they're losing... because they can't pass, shoot or handle the puck at a quality level. So, they are half prepared.

We're going in circles.

What's Quinn joking about? Jack Johnson at center experiment?

I mean if the goalies just brought their B game, the team would be 4-1 right now. And that is with most of the vets having been out to lunch so far.

I don't know if the first Pens game was on the goalie, rather bad luck. I guess the third goal was questionable but it was more of a fluke.

We're definitely not as bad as our record indicates. Hopefully teams will start taking us lightly after looking at the standings and then we come in with a big, unanticipated right hand.

I'd say Panarin right now is about 60% of what he could be, Zib maybe 40%, Kreider 30%, and Strome 50%. If these guys can all get to 70% we'll have a chance to win every night if our goaltending comes back to the mean. We're also getting zero production from Laf and you can't expect that to continue forever.
