I read his draft profile right when he was drafted and it mentioned that he had kind of a slow first step and overall speed. Is that something that he improved on?

to @xigon 's point - sure, the hands and IQ are off the chart

but if he doesn't have footspeed, then we in theory) could have a ty smith situation. not saying we will, but it's a fair concern
From the games and highlights I’ve watched this year, we’re far from Smith skating with Casey. His first step looks fine to me.

His edgework, agility, and first step make Ty look like he’s skating in cement.
Ty’s edgework was good. Just wasn’t explosive or quick enough. Casey seems to have quicker footwork and agility but somewhat similar to Smith he isn’t the most explosive or fastest skater which is what @xigon is talking about.

Is certainly something that could hold him back but he has lots of time and that could improved in the gym and as he grows and gets faster and stronger.
But it’s important he does improve that especially as a very small defensmen. Needs to be able to out skate people.

did you just miss this?

Neither of the things he’s talking about are shown in that video. When people talk about first steps they generally mean explosiveness. So if the puck went the other way behind him how quickly can he takeoff and get there.

Has lots of time to work on it. The video shows he has great edgework and quick hands and feet.
