I'm not necessarily talking about elite forwards. I'm talking about forwards who are relatively good puck carriers/playmakers who can set up their linemates for a decent amount of chances.
Our only guy outside of Sid/Geno that's got pretty decent playmaking ability is Jake. Rust's not a playmaker, Zucker's not a playmaker, and while I like his game, Rakell's not a guy who'll carry the puck and make multiple sweet feeds per game.
You look at the Jets, who we just recently played, and you have Scheifele, Wheeler, Ehlers and Connor, who are all capable of creating offense. You have Dubois who is also pretty good at it.
You look at the Leafs with Matthews, Marner, Tavares and Nylander. Then even in their bottom six a guy like Kerfoot is good at carrying the puck and passing (he's got a muffin shot, however).
If Scheifele and Wheeler have bad games, they're still dangerous because of the other three. If Matthews and Tavares are quiet, you still have Marner and/or Nylander creating chances.
We don't really have that second layer of offense where if Sid/Geno are off their game, you can rely on someone else to still make the Pens' offense dangerous. No, if Sid/Geno are terrible in a game you know we're getting 1 goal or less and generating next to nothing.
