Post-Game Talk: #40: Leafs at Rangers (3 stars of the game)

Wait his was the only screw up? Especially on THAT play? Really!?

Sorry I agree, he just plays the man on the only other option on that play - Lundqvist either has a routine save or no additional work at all.

Yes there were other mistakes, but he played that rush wrong.

you mean the same system that burnt out our entire defensive corps?

You mean the same system where the Rangers can't make 3 foot passes to penetrate the offensive zone? Nah, better to dump the puck and make a line change...

You mean the same system that grinds our players to nubs on the boards.

The same system that is going to require Hank to stand on his head yet again down the stretch? Where more than likely he is going to be burnt out(yet again) when the playoffs roll around.

Dan G has been struggling but for love of zombie Jesus look how much ******* workload our defensive corps has to deal with night in and night out. Our forwards can almost never take any burden off of them because of a complete lack to generate any offensive pressure from the completely asinine board stacked cycling from the "system."
Absolutely spot on BSB.

We have two players that use the middle of the ice consistently, Nash and Stepan.

The so called 'system' we have is very unsustainable and we end up hoping and praying for wins due to this horrendous slap puck on board and hope it gets by 3 opposing players.

I long for the days the Rangers become a puck possession team. Maybe one day.
Let's put it this way, after watching this team for so many years, I've stopped sacrificing sleep to watch them play on weekdays. It's more of a shore or out of duty I watch them, than to be entertained. I think you're both spot on in your analysis and yes, I'm sick of Torts and his non-working system. It feels like a system that gets the least out of every player.

But but but they are a plus 500 team with jAM that block occasional shots and they dump the puck nicely. Even on the PP. What is not to like? Duh.

You should've seen the game tonight, you would've liked it: crashed the net, lot of rebounds. Just couldn't put them away.

They didn't.

Not at all. They got practically no traffic in front of the net. They were never around for chances on rebounds.

They spent practically the entire game trying to lateral pass each other for shots or tap ins.

Even the occasional time they did set up a screen(like the McD goal) they were adverse from shooting through traffic.

Why doesn't the coaching staff see these systemic problems guys? Why can we see major holes and flaws but professional coaches can't see them? It's getting very frustrating! Same old crap every game. Not even a minor tweak except a line change here and there.

Let's face it. We haven't even hit peak frustration yet. In the coming years we're going to have a lot of offensively talented kids pushing for spots. This is going to to get ugly if Torts continues to insist on playing guys like Boyle, Pyatt, etc instead of giving guys like Kreider, Lindberg, Thomas, and Fast chances.

How is this hating? Boyle had a good game. He did what he does well, BUT he still has no offense to his game.

Why is this so hard for people to comprehend?

A few posters were not crediting him for playing a good game at all..that's hate.

Not disagreeing he has no offense in his game.

Travesty of epic proportions? I call their performance business as usual. In the first half we couldn't get possession or get the puck on the net, which has mostly been the story this year. It takes being down a goal for the team to wake up in most cases. They haven't managed to fix that mentality no matter what they do this season. Do you remember many games this season where the Rangers push hard in the first period and manage to score a goal?

I love hockey and I love the Rangers. I find watching their games very exciting. I just have realistic expectations for the team.

I like how you comment on the line that was exaggerated for effect but don't comment on the fact that you clearly have 2 standards for the Leafs and Rangers. Ok without any exaggerated lines for you to grab on to. Rangers play poorly in the first half and you complain. Leafs play poorly in the second half and you praise them. That's despite us getting 2 points and them getting 1. Sounds like you have an agenda.

They should be ashamed of themselves if they don't make the playoffs. The Islanders are the only team in a playoff spot right now. Only one back to back remaining. Home for Florida/At Buffalo.

The Rangers have a day off today.

I share your feelings to a extent.

Its just something Slats is very far from being on top of. Coaches get utdated, but you need a GM who got a ear to the ground.

What bugs me the most nowadays is that its not that we are like pointing fingers at 2-3 teams like I felt we were doing after the lockout. Look what works for Detroit. Now its like all teams have catched on. Teams are N-S. Teams are hardworking. Teams get people on the net. Teams puts puck on the net. Sure, all that is basic and we do it too. But basically all succesful teams in this league has obviously spent alot of energy of working on finding ways to keep the puck within the team. Like divede all 30 teams into six groups in terms of how we play. We aren't even remotely doing what the 4 other teams in our group are doing in this regard. That is painful. We are doing a ton of things right, but in this big sector we are stuck in 2003.

This year, I've not seen one team that wins a defensive battle after a long shift and then just have one thing on their mind and that is getting the puck over the redline and deep so that you can change lines. We do that 15 times per game. A Toronto or Boston or Buffalo or NJ or Ottawa or Montreal or Philly or any team I've seen will do it 2-3 times per game, and every other time reverse and take "chances" to keep the puck within the team.

For us its the opposite, 2-3 times per game someone like Richards maybe will make a individual decision that its not worth it to give the puck away and instead reverse and pass the puck back to a D and go for a linechange.

And that's just one play. Its so extremely obvious that we have put zero focus on managing the puck to win more momentum. A team like Ottawa with very little top end skill on it, just got a dimension to their game -- with how they pass the puck and keep it within the team -- that we only could dream of. It really shows on the PP when we all of a sudden have to start thinking in new lanes and keep the puck within the team, but also in other areas. We have a core group of players that hasn't been drilled in these areas for 3 years now.

You could definitely look at our roster and find flaws. But that could certainly be said about all -- and I mean all -- teams playing in the East. Pittsburg without Crosby, Letang, Marting and Neal or whatever combination of players are hardly perfect. Boston has their fair share of problems, while maybe being the most complete everything taken into consideration. After Bos and Pitt, are Tortonto complete? Montreal? Philly? Ottawa without Spezza and Karlsson? Tampa? lol. My point is just, we really should not be pwned on a regular basis by these teams, or only win when Hank comes up really big etc. Its just ridiculous.

We have a roster to contend but our coach has just not done as good job as the other coaches.

And no fan at this board is claiming to be a better "coach" than Tortorella. But a "fan" can look around the league and see what, more or less, 29 other coaches are doing and look on the ice when we are playing and ask themselves if our coach is on to something no other coach is or if its the opposite.

Wow.

This thread is awful.

So now the system stops our players from making passes. Sure. I'm sure it's all our systems fault guys are looking inept after looking great last year.

KREIDER IS NOT READY FOR THE NHL

HE WAS AWFUL HIS FIRST STINT AND NOT THAT GOOD HIS SECOND.

Jesus, this is insane. At this point I'd like to see a new coach just so half of you can see how ridiculous you sound.

When Kreider blows under a new coach, is it still the fault of Torts?

What are you talking about? Seriously where the **** is this coming from? How was he not that good in his second stint? He made things happen offensively multiple times a game. He was playing aggressively and getting shots on goal. He didn't make glaring defensive mistakes. I don't have any doubt that if he was playing on Brassard's line with Hagelin he'd be producing and we'd be a better team for it.

Brian ****ing Boyle is getting regular powerplay time for some inexplicable reason. There's room on this team for Kreider.

In a chaotic strike-shortened season, in a league that regularly has poor-playing low seeds advancing deep into the playoffs, with a team that added five players in the last two weeks, you know what's realistic to expect?

Now hold on there Charlie, you just contradicted yourself.

In no way will a low seed playing poor hockey "advance deep" in to the playoffs. What you meant to say was, "low seeds who WERE playing poorly." That is exactly the reason people continue to criticize this team, especially after last post-season. You don't get to the SCF by scraping by and playing mediocre hockey. Eventually a better team who is playing hot will bury you. Which was exactly the case last year in the ECF.

The only game where you should not critcize your team afterwards, no matter how good they play, is the one where your captain is handed the Cup. There is always room for improvement otherwise and just being "satisfied" and "enjoying" a win without talking about what could be better is a crappy attitude that breeds mediocrity. Do you think the Rangers sit around after an okay game and say, "good enough for me!" just because they got two points? **** no they don't. That's why they are professional athletes. They've spent their whole lives asking themselves how they can be better. Yet for some reason as a fan we are supposed to just be okay with everything and celebrate because they managed two points. Whoopty-****.

The point of the game is to win the Cup. To do that this team needs to be better and until they are, two points is just a stepping stone in to another deflating and disappointing post-season.

So by default then you must think Boyle > Kreider for a 3rd line role?

That's why I'm not even remotely excited for this season's playoffs. If we manage to get into the playoffs with our mediocre hockey, we'll be absolutely trashed by either Pittsburgh, Montreal, Boston or even Washington who're heating up. Our forwards will be unable to hold puck possession for more than 15 seconds and our defense will be grinded to bits and commit untimely mistakes. Hank will have to play world class goaltending and it still won't be enough. That we are so bad playing away won't exactly help either without any home ice advantage.

When either of these four teams tighten up another notch defensively, it'll be the same old story where we can't buy a goal to save our lives, because our puck possession is horrible, our idiotic coaches will put Girardi and Del Zotto on the PP point to make us lose all hope, we never drive to the net and we can't even take care of our own crease. Nash will be double teamed, Richards will continue to be invisible, Boyle will single handedly shut down the 3rd line offensively so our depth will be brutal, while Brassard will sulk on the 4th line or be scratched because he doesn't play like Brian "Gretzky" Boyle. No one else will step up and I see a 1st round exit, losing 4-1 or 4-2, because Hank managed to steal a couple.

We're 8 years in from the lockout and this team still stands or falls basically solely on Lundqvist. It's sickening.

Rangers - Maple Leafs would make for a great Playoff Series.

I want to comment on the game, but watching only the 3rd period and OT I only have negative things to say.

We needed 2 points, we got 2 points. I'll take it.

Also, for those that think we are just going to magically beat the Islanders on Saturday. The isles are 7-1-1 in their past 9 games.

Saturday could very well be one of the ugliest games of the season for the NYR.

He single-handedly gave up the second goal, just quit on the play. Points against I'd think.

Did u just say he singlehandedly gave up the second goal? Either you didn't see the play or....there's no response for such silliness. He didn't quit. He read a different pass than what happened. Remember, JVR is ahead of Asham so he can't see Kessel. Unbelievable.

You mean where he teared it up with like 1 point?

Yes, as a big cone in front of the goalie. It's not like he's as a playmaker....
