Post-Game Talk: #40: Leafs at Rangers (3 stars of the game)

No it's because this team plays like garbage for long spurts of the game.

Look at the thread when we lost in the back2back vs. Pittsburgh. That was a great effort.

The team's play will reflect the emotions on the board imo.

And tonight's game was a great back-and-forth game. Instead of savoring the win against a tough team, we ***** about everyone and everything.

Well. Not we. I don't include myself in that "we."

We were absolutely awful the first half of this game and had 1 good shift in the first 30 minutes of the game. This team has 8 or 9 bad starts for every 1 or 2 good starts. The Leafs started playing badly in the last half of this game but still managed to get a point. That's just reality. I don't have high hopes for the playoffs this year with the way this team has been playing. I'm just enjoying the games now because there won't be many more until October.

Exactly this.

The Road to Nowhere.

Let's see. Let's break this post up:

We play poorly for the first half of the game and it's a travesty of epic proportions, despite us getting 2 points.

Leafs poorly the second half of the game and what a great team that managed to get 1 point.

Sounds like you made up your mind on the team and instead of critically analyzing them are looking for excuses why they suck to back up your opinion.

i think brassard will be a solid guy for us. i think his line needs to be changed though. hagelin-brassard-cally could work. maybe demoting cally to the third line will light a fire under him (cally)

demoting? That's where he belongs

The only issue I have with Cally to the third and Zucc to the first is...Boyle to the 2nd. Idgaf if he got a star tonight, Boyle cannot continue on the second or third line for that matter. We need to Dorse to get healthy pronto

Huge win.

I don't care how they got the two points, they got em.

Heard there was terrible travel issues coming back from Canada. Gutty performance.

The only fault Sather has is that he has put too much faith in a blind prophet. As I said earlier, I respect that Sather backs up the coach. But Torts is not the man to put that faith in.

Sather has done his as much as he can to cater to Torts. He went out of his way to get players to conform to Tort's style. Torts still can't put it together.

Eventually, Sather will recognize this. I just hope we won't have to go through another full season for the brain wave to happen.

Torts has offically moved into Mike D'antoni territory for me.

Zero championships D'antoni, never won anything?

Yeah, that makes sense.

well hes not playing there right now so yes it would be a demotion :p:

i was doing an impression but yes, he needs to either be matched up against players that will falter more readily to his grind and "not a third line x factor" or he needs distractions on a line that's clicking. He was atrocious tonight and hasn't been great lately either so a third line game might help him especially since he's going to still be getting 23 a game.

Ya know what was different in that game?

Rangers were getting in front of the net, shooting through traffic, and fishing for rebounds.

After that?

The Rangers reverted right back to being a perimeter shooting team.

You should've seen the game tonight, you would've liked it: crashed the net, lot of rebounds. Just couldn't put them away.

Agreed.

I think Hags should go back to playing with Stepan and Nash. Or play on a line with Callahan and not Brian Boyle. That's what I would like to see at least. I think adding Staal and Dorsett to the team in time for the playoffs will give us the boost we need because despite what some of you think, we're not a horrible team and we're capable of doing damage in the playoffs. Staal especially, my god.

Team definitely looked lethargic but I'm confident we will win against the Isles, and we will take a playoff spot. We get Dorsie and Staal healthy for the playoffs and we come a deeper team with options.

I can see Torts the juggler putting
Boyle-Brassard-Dorsett together as a 3rd line. Should look good.

Hagelin-Stepan-Nash
Clowe-Richards-Zuccarello/Callahan
Kreider/Boyle-Brassard-Dorsett/Callahan
Pyatt-Powe-Asham/Dorsett

McDonagh-Girardi
MDZ-Staal
Moore-Stralman/Eminger
Bickel for playoff toughness

Pretty deep line-up. I want Kreider back for the playoffs.
Have a feeling Brassard with Kreider can flourish together, add a banger like Cally or Dorse and we should be set with a good line.

I really wish we had an upgrade for Powe and Pyatt, useless members of the squad.

Travesty of epic proportions? I call their performance business as usual. In the first half we couldn't get possession or get the puck on the net, which has mostly been the story this year. It takes being down a goal for the team to wake up in most cases. They haven't managed to fix that mentality no matter what they do this season. Do you remember many games this season where the Rangers push hard in the first period and manage to score a goal?

You don't sound like you're enjoying them.

I love hockey and I love the Rangers. I find watching their games very exciting. I just have realistic expectations for the team.

Reimer played very very well. I honestly don't understand what this board is complaining about. The offense isn't the reason why we lost to Pittsburgh or Toronto since the trade. Fleury played out of his mind in the 2-1 SO loss. And then the defense was abyssmal against Toronto on Monday. It's like half of you don't watch games or are simply unsatisfied with winning. In the playoffs, gritty, strong, defensive hockey wins. The Rangers played their game tonight and won. We have the personel to go deep in the playoffs. You can't win a cup without a good goaltender unless you have Gretzky and Messier on the same team (or a healthy Malkin and Crosby). Every cup team has a goalie that played out of their minds. Look at the Kings last year. They got hot when it mattered, snuck into the playoffs as an 8 seed, and won the cup.
