Post-Game Talk: #40: Leafs at Rangers (3 stars of the game)

You guys must have really lowered your expectations. He was fine, but not as good as Hank, Step, Zucc. McD, Hags and Brassard.

Not lowered expectations...recognition of his effort.

He doesn't do it very well, but he went to the net last night more than anyone else on the team...consistently in the dirty areas in front of the net.

Did I say he was better than any of the players you mentioned above?

You guys are pissed off at the wrong guy, blame the coach for playing him so much that's who controls TOI.

Dupuis was 7th in the NHL in ESP/60 last year in a shutdown role when Crosby only played 22 games. He had no consistent linemates that year, but usually played with Staal, Cooke, and Sullivan who weren't close to his level of production. He was also one of the leagues premier defensive forwards.

Dupuis > Callahan at even strength ANIEC.

Dupuis is a millionaire's Hagelin.

Absolutely agree 100%. He is still scoring without Crosby this season. And was last season.

Again, you said the same thing but now in a different way. "Heading in to the playoffs" is not the same as IN in the playoffs. They were not mediocre in the playoffs, at all. Big difference.

Of course it's not the same thing, because it wasn't what we were talking about, which was how teams are playing while entering the playoffs. Last year Boston was playing great at the end of the regular season, the Kings weren't. And yet somehow playoff predictions come so easy to some people.

I'm glad the Kings beat the Devils last year, but I hate it at the same time.

Now the 'Kings won it as the 8th seed' will be used to shade out the mediocrity within the organization.

They've had maybe 2-3 games where they look like a dominant team in a 40 game season so far.

They beat the 7th seed btw.

NHL playoffs are a bit of a crapshoot if you haven't noticed. Just get in.

Ah yes. Jordan Staal. The guy who scored the same amount of goals and put up 9 less points than Dupuis in 20 less games. Seems pretty close to me.

Between Staal, Crosby, Malkin and Letang, they were involved in 14 of his 25 goals that year. Callahan does not have such luxuries. He still managed to score more and in less games too.

On a team that has featured guys like Crosby, Malkin, Staal, Letang and Neal and Iginla in the past two seasons, I don't think opposing teams are sending out their best defensemen to keep the big, bad Pascal friggin' Dupuis away.

You guys in the general sense including MSG which gave him the 3rd star. I do blame the coach and let's give him credit where it is due. He was fine last night (which is a good night for him) but he did not provide a "star" performance last night

Not at ES. Dupuis didn't play on the powerplay. Dupuis: 2.76 ESP/60, Staal: 2.3 ESP/60, Sullivan: 1.79 ESP/60, Cooke: 1.66 ESP/60. Dupuis also plays some of the toughest minutes on the Pens. I.E. the offensive puck-possession guys, maybe slightly easier to score on than the shutdown guys, but not an easy task as these players spend most of their time outplaying their opponent. 2nd pairings and scoring lines.

You mean where he teared it up with like 1 point?

Yes, because point totals in a six game sample size are completely indicative of quality of play. He played well in his first four games back before getting relegated to the fourth line a shift into the Montreal game for no good reason.

Yes, as a big cone in front of the goalie. It's not like he's as a playmaker....

If we had someone in front with a pair of hands like Kreider, we'd score more goals. Having someone stand in front who isn't good at deflecting the puck or putting in rebounds really limits the value of having him there.

Really wish Clowe wouldn't fight above his weight class, other than that great game. Sucks we couldn't manage to win it in regulation but I'll take what we can get.

You say that as if one-timers are a common occurrence with this team.

 It sure would be nice to see some. We can start by:

a.) finding players open for one-timers
b.) Said players actually taking the ****ing one timer instead of waiting for the goalie to come over and try to shoot it far side.

Sounds risky. Is there any side effects?

Someone needs to photoshop the universe exploding as soon as Richie goes for the one timer against Philly 2 weeks ago

Or even the one against Pitt last week

Ya know what I wonder? I wonder if players are shouting out to each other. Do they have any kind of aural communication going on?
I have no idea, but I am sure people who attend the games might know.

I saw a few situations last night where there was an unguarded Rangers player trailing his puck-carrying teammate. Yet, no clever drop pass. Makes me wonder about communication.
I could be all wet, but when I watch it, I scratch my head as to why it almost never happens the puck is simply gently dropped and the guy behind steps into a shot at full flight. It's not like they should drop the puck willy-nilly like that amazingly bad one by Richards which made me think he is on magic mushrooms, but if the guy behind is open, it's a surprise play and there may also be a built-in screen ahead of him.

Yeah, you can usually hear them shouting to eachother.
