I remember he knocked Sundin when he was traded here. Called out the French players and Europeans for wearing visors. The guy should have been riding to the arena in a horse and buggy, he was the most controversial, "love or hate him" man involved in hockey.
That said, he has some good tidbits about hockey no doubt, he coached one of the greatest players in history and he wasn't shy about his opinions, believing in free speech.
I always felt he was excessively overrated though but I allowed him latitude because of his support for the military. I had to grudgingly respect him for his support of soldiers. I also believe that Ron threw him under the bus when in the past Cherry stood up for Ron in a response to CBC or Molson (I forget now), that "if he goes (Ron), I go (Cherry)". With pressure from Molson, they capitulated and Ron stayed. He also loves Canada as witnessed by his defense of the Canadian Juniors after they were goaded into a fight against the Russians which cost them a shot at the gold medal.
I'm not my brothers keeper. He has his controversies and also moments of patriotism one can't ignore.
In a poll by CBC I believe, he was ranked 7th greatest Canadian of all time. Imagine that. A sports commentator the 7th greatest Canadian ever? I mean, wow. That wasn't exactly a vote of confidence on our inventors, visionaries and civil right fighters (where they exists at all)...
