Every team wants 12 top 6 forwards and 6 top 4 D-men.
The real choice is what skill set do you want in the mediocre players at the bottom of your roster.
Strawman argument.

Briere got rid of Hayes, Provorov, Atkinson and TDA.
The only "skilled" player moved was Walker, for a 1st rd pick.
Gleason, who they got for Attard, is more skilled and a better playmaker (good for young forwards).
Misleading, need to look at the real reason those trades were made.

Nothing burgers.

Laughton is the only one who'd have brought anything back, and his value is about the same (scoring more this year and a year off his contract).

The others, meh. I don't fret about picks after the top 100 anymore, especially as they load up with top 100 picks, you don't need more players like Murchison, Zanetti or MacPherson or Pautov. Are you worried they missed the chance to draft the next Mann?

You call every mistake the team makes nothing burgers. If it were true the team would be good.

DB literaly said last off season there would be no more signing old dog vets to one last contract then went out and got EJ..

this Org. is the offical retirement home of the league...DB didnt even make it 1 season before jumping at another old dog

He also openly admitted he wouldn't even be trying to get much top end talent. Said they wouldn't be built that way. They're quadrupling down on building from the bottom out. They want the bottom 6 or even bottom 9 to be the core of the team with the two or three serious talents being complimentary to them.

Hence rushing to draft a middle/bottom six ceiling player in Luchanko rather than the more talented options.

Who would you prefer they sit on the bench?

Before the season, they expected Andrae to start in LHV and weren't sure about Zamula or Drysdale.
If I had projected Andrae as a top 4 D-man I'd been laughed at.
Now Andrae/Zamula are both playing well next to Risto in that role.
And Drysdale had come on like gangbusters since he returned to the lineup.
So Johnson is now the #8 D-man. Which is good. He's a minimum wage veteran.

They would love to have a Bedard, so would 31 other teams.
However they have a Michkov, TK and Sanheim, who 31 other teams would also want to have.

They're not tanking, they'd have to completely tear this team apart to land in the top five.
So forget that fantasy, it ain't happening.
They have a very young team, a lot of talent in the pipeline and a lot of high draft picks this summer, and some tradeable assets.

Can Briere make it work? I have no idea and neither does anyone else.
There's enough to work with if they draft well and make a couple judicious trades.
Which they'd have to do if they tanked, so it's the same issue, either they're competent or it's hopeless, whatever strategy they choose. I mean what good is #2 if you take JVR, Patrick or Kakko?

We'll know in a couple years.

We know already he can't make it work. We've got a good handle on what he is as a GM now.

The only reason Briere even has a shot is that we got insanely lucky and a talent like Michkov fell in their laps. They really need to draft in the top 5, desperately.

Isn't the 2025 draft class expected to be weak? Would be typical if we win the lottery only to draft a Shane Wright level player.

What does the list of UFA players next summer look like? That's what I'd rather be looking at next year.

Top 4 is legit studs, after that weakish, could be a few star players though deep in the draft, you never know.

I don’t want to put words in his mouth, but I thought this was not the case based on what I’ve read from @Appleyard?

If they can trade up to get one of Schaefer, Hagens or Misa, it's worth.

I agree, was just a little joke on how last year they tried to rile up the fanbase more with the idea of trading up.

Doesn’t happen, nor do they have the balls to do so if presented a realistic offer imo.

You’d think with 3 first rounders, Bonk/Luchanko, this would be the year to make it happen - if I dare to allow myself to dream.
