I remember a lot of posters here fawning that Kreider was finally going to put it together and become the ppg tank we all want him to be last season, when he was 26.

But sure, let's be dissapointed that Lias Andersson is 20 and not McDavid.

Very good post.

And remember how Hayes looked at times his rookie and second season. Hayes was what 23 his rookie year?

I don’t know what it is — but the last year there have crept in a bit of a notion to this board that kids are what they are and can’t improve.

Zdeno Chara is like the best defender in the NHL post lock-out. I clearly remember his rookie season in like 97 or 98 or something, who has the Islanders brought in now? What a joke! He made Rich Pilon look like Bobby Orr. What is the relevance of this? It’s an extreme example but so many players does improve their game a lot.

To add to this, most prospects take 2-3 years after being drafted to start playing for an NHL org, and sometimes even longer to start contributing regularly. The league has changed and while there are a lot more 18 and 19 year olds, it's still a small number. Lias was only drafted a little over 17 months ago and he's already taking a regular shift at this level and playing special teams. That's ahead of the curve IMHO. Will he be a superstar/top 20 player in this league? Probably not. Will he continue to improve? Absolutely.

Was at the game last night...one thing I noticed besides the obvious that the Rangers were outplayed ALL game, that the Rangers, although being out shot all game were winning around 75-80% of their faceoffs for the first two periods. That pretty much negated anything the Jets could do after a whistle. Once the third period started, the game pretty much flipped on Smith's stupid cross check penalty. Jets were winning faceoffs, started hitting more (Rangers outhit them all game which is an odd stat if you were watching) and then their talent allowed them to comeback.

This is why hockey is such a great sport. One team can fully outplay their opponent and yet be down 3-0. The same team then comes back and wins the game. It was a weird game...

Hank was amazing, sad to see him waste his final years on the Rangers like this.

Totally agree but I’m gonna propose a solution. Seriously would be ok trading him to the Jets( who desperately need goal tending) in exchange for practically anyone( or a combination of many) of their young talented guys. This is more of a concept than reality, but it could make sense on a lot of levels!

Rangers are just bad and, despite looking great in Novemeber are so diminished in talent thanks to these injuries that they are probably putting on the ice the worst lineup in recent memory. This just shows us all how incredibly barren the minor leagues are for the team and how very far away the Rangers are from being, at all, good. At one point I actually turned to my dad who was watching the game with me and asked “I wonder what the NHL record is for lowest amount of shots on goal a team has had and still won and NHL game?” realistically expecting the Rangers to contend for that title last night!

To be fair, people would have said this about Blake Wheeler until he was about 29.

Connor and Ehlers are good players, nothing unattainable.

Laine is a nice piece, but I don't think he drives that team. It's not something you absolutely need to contend.

We need the Scheifele. That's what this organization is missing right now.

You just said Patrick Laine, the NHL leader in goals, who can out skate anyone on the Rangers roster, has the best shot in the game and absolutely dominates when he wants is a “nice piece”... if that’s the best he earns I can only imagine what you’d use to describe Lias and Chytil. If either develop into even half the hockey player Laine is the Rangers may have something.

When we get back buchnevich and namestnicov as well as zuccarello then we will look like an nhl team again. I thought the coach and hank did a great job of holding back what it a much much better team and getting a point

The Rangers would have lost 10-0 last night if it wasn’t for Lundqvist playing out his mind and it still wasn’t enough.

The media says the Rangers looked awful because they were concentrating on not giving up so many odd man chances. Really? If it wasn’t for their goaltender, they would have been blown out.

Winnipeg has so many players rolling out shift after shift. The Rangers looked like an AHL team compared to Winnipeg.

If they take the body instead of trying to stick check before the player gets to the blue line the puck never gets into the zone for the tying goal
When does that actually happen? not often anyway. Theyre taught stick on puck, stick on puck .....and i get it, i do......but doesnt that limit ability to actually hit someone, standing them up at blue line? Could be done, but its so much easier to take a swipe and not hurt your body. Im an oldtimer, whaddaya expect from me, what do I know?

Hank is playing great this year, but lets go easy on the hyperbole.
Nobody should feel sorry for a guy who getting paid a ton of money and had a long run of playoff appearances and opportunities.
This is a young team that isn't very good. A team which Hank chose to be part of through the rebuild.

Lol, Lias has been showing incremental improvements with each game but what a surprised to yet again see @Kovalev27 unable to comprehend prospects development or having a long(er)-term memory to put forth an analysis based on longer than 20 games. At least you stopped calling him a reach as we now know that it wasn't correct factually.

I just wish that @Kovalev27 would go out on a limb for a prospect and some idiot starts to come over to repeatedly shit on this prospect or the front office for picking him in every thread.

What am I missing here?

In 21 NHL games at age 19/20, Andersson has 2 goals and 5 points - 8 goals and 20 points over a full season. This while mostly playing on the fourth line.

In 37 games as a 18/19 year old, Chytil has 6 goals and 12 points - 13 goals and 26 points over a full season. This while playing a lot on the fourth line.

I'm not exactly sure what we're lamenting. Would we feel better if they were posting 40 goals and 115 point paces in juniors?

I was sold snake oil during those 2017 playoffs. Him and Skjei were the best d combo I had seen in quite along time for the Rangers. Physical, quick, terrific in all three zones in a hostile environment. Wtf
I bought a case of that stuff. How much did you buy? I truly thought Smith was the answer to what was ailing the Rangers defense, at the time. We needed physicality on the back end, and he provided just that. Furthermore, i thought he would be quite the leader, in showing our other dmen "how to play tuff defense". Boy, was I taken.
Still say he isnt a "bad defenseman", but he seems to have his head up his ass way too often. Mistakes happen in todays fast NHL, but "stupidity" isnt what he should be teaching the kids.

I still don`t understand why they use them on the 4th line @Edge - is that one of the coach thing? :)
I understand many coaches think that their players need to deserve their ice time, but it should be based on talent level as well in my opinion. And think what they could have in stats if both were given top 9 ice time playing with more skilled players in the beginning?

But I guess different coaches have different views on the topic. But maybe we overvalue our top prospects since we don`t watch them train each day.
