"Tip your hat to them". I miss Torts's press conferences.
I was 100% sure Kakko was a slam dunk pick. I would have taken him over Hughes 10 out of 10 times. Dude was skating circles around men before he even came here. Laf - same thing. A bit older, bigger, has some grit. I would have bet my sack that they would be immediate impact players.
Good thing I didn't...
This is true. But there is no reason to expect this to happen. This coach is treating them like everyone else holding them accountable. So, they are playing pretty conservatively. Both are 3rd man high alot and are not getting PP time. Other top picks, like Jack Hughes who gives the puck away all night are given a ton of rope to make mistakes and lead to losses and they get some points because of usage and because they are talented. This coach is not interested in how many point Laf and KK put up at 19 and 20. He is trying to make them 200 foot players and that and some bad luck have led to poor production. Just be patient.
You watch their highlights from Jr's and WJC and you think to yourself, what happened? Where is the progression and growth? Where are the sustain flashes of that skill?I was 100% sure Kakko was a slam dunk pick. I would have taken him over Hughes 10 out of 10 times. Did you consider that the reason the 2nd unit isn’t good is because they’re on it?Except, you know, literally any 1st unit Powerplay time....
I'm trying to think of how this season could've played out worse to this point...then I throw Kravtsov into the mix
whats the common denominator? You watch their highlights from Jr's and WJC and you think to yourself, what happened? Where is the progression and growth? Where are the sustain flashes of that skill?
That number of games played keeps growing uncomfortably larger. Something has to give eventually if he is indeed the player we hope he is.And Nathan Mckinnon has three 5 v 5 goals this year. Strange year for all. Watching Kakko you see alot of good. Let him marinate; Has he played even 100 games as a newly minted 20 year old?
Kakko has certain skills and abilities to be a very good player but after watching essentially all his NHL games I'm beginning to think he is the type of winger who is going to need a center who can hold and pass the puck. Kind of like Nylander with Jagr.
This I don't fully buy into. The 2nd unit rarely gets the offensive zone draw. It's almost always on the fly, not fully changed, and with 35 seconds left.Did you consider that the reason the 2nd unit isn’t good is because they’re on it?
Because 1 point is a meaningless consolation prize in a season where we aren’t going to be in the race, and watching the game we’re disgusted with what we see from our team and coaches. Panarin had a 3 point explosion in a 5 minute window in the second. Otherwise we bled breakaways and odd man rushes, Kreider was invisible, Mika is cursed, the kids are invisible, Miller was running around like a headless chicken with no accountability (because NCAA?) and we’re paying Trouba Pietrangelo money for Dumolin performance.
lol oops even Vally and Pidto are off
I legitimately mistook Rooney for Laf a couple of times tonight. Who’s that gangly lefty with a number in the teens taking a guy wide and sniping top cheese. Oh, wait, definitely not Laf.I'm just gonna pretend that Lafreniere is Blackwell and and Kakko is Rooney.
Imagine if both Lafy and Kakko bust here and get traded and then breakout in their mid 20s. It would not shock me for them to do that.
Not defending Quinn. Defending the kids. We have no shot to win anything this year. The organization should be all about letting these guys play in all situations to develop. But Quinn thinks every player has to be Patrice Bergeron. I have never, not once seen Kakko hang at the red line for a pass. He is always back, always high in the O Zone if he doesn't have the puck. That's a kid who is scared to get caught and catch the wrath of his coach. He has to find the balance; once he does his skills will take over. When he has the puck, he protects it, he moves it and his activity leads to shots. He is snake bitten. Laf will be just fine, but the leash needs to be loosened on both.Yes, and thats how they learn. Make mistakes, score points. You don't have them do a million dump-and-chase reps and preach 'board work' all day. Thats how you end up with elite grinders. not elite scorers.
They know that Trautwig's contract wasn't renewed so now they're getting too comfortableEven Steve's 3 Emmy's can't save this.
