Yeah, I’m officially on the Yzerman is a mid to bad GM train.

quiet! you'll alert the yzerman apologists.

Yeah, I’m officially on the Yzerman is a mid to bad GM train.
Funny thing is, I was standing alone on the Yzerman is a mid GM train ever since he was in TB... I just think most of y'all's complaints and expectations are silly.

Every year, people are in awe at the prices you have to pay at the trade deadline.
Every year, people are in awe at the lack of stars in UFA.

He's building the drafting and developing. Those players are coming. The ones that are here are our best players. Other moves can start to come to eventually to put us over the top. But its not time to make panic moves to simply make the playoffs

What a nonsense day!!!!!

Mrazek back again with another year on his deal to be an .890 goalie?
Current day Smith is the same as Veleno only older so meh. Don't care that Veleno is gone, but this isn't an upgrade, plus we add another bad contract for next year in Mrazek.

And the biggest issue of the day, no D added that boots Holl to being off the roster. There were other D had for 3rd round picks, not sure how we can't acquire at least someone else without giving up assets.

I don't get it. Yzerman needs to have heat for sure for not changing the blueline this whole season, when it sucked before the season began and never was improved. Trying to make trades isn't enough, an actual move was needed.

No panic move was needed. The price was low for 3rd pair D.

Basically Yzerman said the same thing I said. Why would we punt picks and prospects for rentals to squeak in. He said all this drafting would have been a waste of time.

Yeah after simmering a bit the prices were ridiculous.

Only thing I really wanted from SY is trading Holl for someone a little cheaper and more steady.

Yes. Fast guy who’s useless.

Smith is a slow guy who’s useless

Saying Smith is going to be someone who “helps us put the puck in the net” is purely idiotic

Craig Smith has scored 220 goals in the NHL. He might be completely washed.

To be quite clear I wouldn't have done this trade because minimally upgrading the 4th line and bringing in a veteran to make Cossa push for a spot weren't really big needs. I wanted to move Lyon and Chairot today.

I also think the overreaction is pretty amazing with the fanbase today. I mean for the folks that wanted to give up our mid-second for Zetterlund I don't think our problem is on the wing.

I also think the guys in the room are going to make the playoffs or not. He made quite clear he doesn't think the team is hard enough to play against. He wanted to have his first and second at the draft when that flexibility is more important. People can clearly feel whatever way they want about this, these are the cards we have right now.

Smith this season:
G/60: 1.01
P/60: 2.03

Veleno since McLellan took over:
G/60: .22
P/60: .44
Now do their overall numbers. Smith has what? 4 extra goals? So we can expect 1-2 extra goals out of Smith for the season than Veleno?

That’s sure gunna help!!

What someone has done in their career is utterly irrelevant when you are 35 years old and washed.

Unless you’d have liked us to acquire Suter from STL? He was a #1D after all!

I bet he provides more offense to the bottom 6 than Veleno even in this washed state.

I don't care about giving up Joe Veleno is the bigger point here. His offense has been non-existent under three coaches. Keep in mind of the points he scored this year a few came with Larkin and Raymond. We can look at other parts of the roster, but I don't disagree that Craig Smith is a better offensive depth player than Veleno.

By 1-2 extra goals over the remainder of the season. I’m sure that will be the difference maker
We are a point out of the playoffs, so um yeah actually good argument.

It is on the goalies to play well. I think we were in tough the second Copp's arm buckled as much as everyone around here thinks he sucks. Tarasenko has to get going for this group in my opinion. But flipping out Veleno for Smith is an upgrade not huge but an upgrade.

Very disappointed in this deadline. We needed Center depth and to upgrade Holl and we got Craig Smith and Petr Mrazek. Smith is whatever, probably an upgrade on Motte/Fischer and Veleno needed a change of scenary, but why did we need Mrazek? Who's only been slightly better than Husso who we moved for nothing.

Would have rather moved Veleno for some bottom pairing defenseman or a late round pick.

Our problem is 2nd line center (beyond playing Chiarot on 1st pairing but that is impossible to fix now) after Copp went out and the obvious solution is to put Kasper there, which creates a hole on the first line. Zetterlund seems to me like somebody who can play Kasper role there, but maybe i overrate him.

I’m not saying he’s not an upgrade. It’s Yzermans reasoning of “he’s going to help us put the puck in the net” statement which is hilarious.

I know @OgeeOgelthorpe has championed him which honestly does intrigue me because I like most of the players he likes. We differ on a few with pretty big clashes, but generally I trust when he is sold on someone.

I think Kane is re-signing. Raymond, DeBrincat probably Tarasenko. We got Mazur next year, have Soderblom in a bigger role and Berggren in a bigger role lately. The board has been melting for a year and half to do that and when Yzerman does it we go on suicide watch?

Zetterlund is a slightly more physical, but slightly less skilled Berggren playing 2nd line ice time on a team that is really only playing a pump n dump system for trade assets.

Yzerman's rationale was the prices goalies are getting paid in the last few weeks + the thin goalie market this summer.

So the solution was to get a one up on the UFA market and snag a goalie that's already overpaid and garbage.
