What does our cap space / retention spots look like for next season?
Colossal amount of cap space, like north of $25M iirc. Three retention slots starting this summer with Smith and Petry coming off the books. One retention slot pretty much locked in on EK whenever he's finally moved, which feels like a foregone conclusion this summer.

Why the f*** bother keeping Shea. Why does this team like to hang on to marginal garbage so f***ing much.

It's not like they're lacking in depth players, most of this roster is depth garbage most teams wouldn't dress regularly. I'd rather they cut bait with POJ and Shea at the end of the year, promote Pickering next year and let Kolyachonok ride it out as the 3rd pair. I'm sure Dubas is being told by Sullivan to extend Gryz to some dumb 3yr extension.

So the LD is what?

Gryz
Pickering
POJ
Graves
Kolyachonok
Shea

Lol...they'll scratch Timmins to play Shea on the right side.

Graham is a useless no one, not even worth an echl level contract. Chase Stillman is like a slower Gruden with NHL bloodlines. That third is the best part of that deal.

Dewar is better than Acciari but I'm sure he'll get Sullied. Timmins is going to hate his life trying to make sense of an illogical system and then get blamed for shit he can't control within that chaos.

I'm curious how Sullivan f***s up Novak and also what he does to f*** over Geno even more vs the VGK.

BUT HEY, at least we got picks, lots and lots of picks lol. But again, all for naught if Sullivan remains after the season. You can't go for a youth push with a coach that refuses to use youth or help them develop during a time where the team is in transition and needs a coach that will do that. A contender will maybe say no the players need to develop in the ahl etc. But a team in the Pens situation, that shit doesn't fly.

Sullivan has already given 8+ yrs of showing he can't do shit in that department.

I missed the Graham / Stillman / Gruden wrinkle to the Glass trade. Guessing it’s just a couple longshot-but-still-prospects for 2 guys that sort of aged out of prospect status.

The general theme being they’re not skilled but they’re big/grindy/trucculent, so 4th liners at best.

Eric Tulsky should be fired for this shit. At one point he was interviewed twice for the vacant Pens GM job, bullet dodged for sure because he absolutely destroyed the Canes from the 2024 Deadline to the 2025 Deadline.

OUT:
Martin Necas
Jack Drury
Michael Bunting (was dealt for Schenn and Novak, Schenn was then dealt for 2nd in 2026 and 4th in 2027)
Ponomarev
Koivunen
Lucius
Guentzel
2024 2nd round pick (Harrison Bruinicke)
2025 2nd Round Pick
2026 4th Round Pick

IN:
Logan Stankoven
Taylor Hall
Ty Smith
2025 3rd Round Pick
2026 1st Round Pick
2027 1st Round Pick
(plus smaller pieces)

Shea is fine it’s just his usage is bizarre. You can’t have 7 Makars so you need a few cheap depth guys. He’s like Ruhwedel though, he’s a #8 that they deploy like a #6.
Sure he's a depth D but you forget our coach is Sullivan and we saw how Ruhwedel stayed forever before they finally dumped him. Chad was played constantly over POJ and others and that's the issue. Shea is good for depth but not playing as much as he has been.

Seems like honestly a lot of decent work.

Would you consider using a buyout for Graves? Is it possible someone would take him in a trade? I believe a buyout would look like this...

Current cap hit of $4.500 for 4 more years

Buyout cap hit of $2.400, $3.400, $3.400, $3.650, $0.646, $0.646, $0.646, $0.646

No reason to buy him out. He's not hurting the team as a #7D and you can bury him in the AHL if you need to.

It is all about the transition and getting assets. Picks and prospects and younger coming in and older going out. Dubas will execute what he believes is the best course of action. The issue is not Sullivan as a coach. He is just the wrong coach for this transition. He has to go as part of the remake.

Downgrading from 63gp-21g-49a-70pts to 59gp-9g-20a-29pts when you have current Cup aspirations/expectations seems a bit boneheaded from my cheap seats. Even if a couple magic beans were thrown in.
Especially when Rantanen signed a completely reasonable extension in Dallas. Did Tulsky even consult with Rantanen or his reps before acquiring him to get a feel for what a deal would look like?

A lot of people on here seem to think there's a realistic chance that Marner will sign here. I have a difficult time believing that. If they're planning on making one two more runs while Crosby is around, obviously Marner is of the caliber of player they'd need to go after, but I don't see what's in it for him versus signing for similar money on a team with a better long term prognosis. Unless Dubas throws an absolutely insane amount of money at him, it seems farfetched to think this team is gonna make big improvements anywhere besides at the draft table.

So things are getting more focused as to the next phase. WB guys like McGroarty, Broz, Pickering, Ponomarev possibly Koivunen although I think the off season he has to add size and strength. St Ivany has the size and bang for a 3rd pair RD. Add in Novak, Tomasino, with potential see Brunicke in D as well. Even with 25 million of cap space, who is coming here with the cap going up and teams signing top players. Marner will be back in Leaf land. Pens draft next 2 years adds plus whatever they get back in the Karlsson and one of Rust or Rakell trades. Top 5 pick this year and next year is big to getting high end centers and RW's.

Yeah, no true difference makers there….there will be no contending next phase unless they draft McKenna etc…enjoy the next few seasons of sucking badly…which is what they need to do if they want to turn this around as quickly as Dubas claims he wants to

pens will have to out roster teams as will most teams. Yes the talent is there but expecting the next Sid or Mario or Geno is simply wishful thinking. Pens draft a very good center this year, Get a very good player in 2025 and add talent with the picks and see who does what is the only option now. Rising cap and teams keeping players is simply changing free agency. Pens move Karlsson and Rust in off season for ready made prospects.

nah. Maybe management screwed up but it started with him low balling Jake and letting him walk. Then he moved a ppg player signed 2 more years for what ended up being futures and a worse player. Canes moved backwards big time with all of this.

I just hope he panics this summer and gives up some of that draft capital for Rakell :)
