He didn't do it to Nylander. They signed Nylander to the exact contract he wanted (more than all of his comparables, including players that were better than him). The cap hit was low because the deal was signed 5 minutes before the deadline. In year 1 of the deal (the final year of Matthews and Marner's ELCs) his cap hit was 10.28 million. The Leafs folded, Dumbass even admitted it.

They followed it up by handing Matthews that garbage contract.

I meant the first Nylander contract. The one they forced him to sit to sign. They strong armed him enough to force him to sit and sign or be out for the year. It was a fair cap hit then I think. The same tactic should have been held on Mitch and Paul Marner. The entire team and their culture got decimated when Shanahan and Dubas rolled over.

He reportedly turned down more money from San Jose and turned down the same 11 milliom contract from Islander but with the extra 8th year. He not only lost money because of taxes but also lost the extra year. His next contract is rumoured to be 7 million which would be 4 million less than the Islander 8th year, and even more due to taxes.

Meanwhile Marner does everything in his power to be overpaid, like refusing to sign 8 year contracts..in order to maximize his % hit he gets due to cap rises. Very big difference between these two situations. They are polar opposites. One was selfless, the other very selfish.

People seem OK with Vegas being all business. Why it it a problem for Marner to be the same. Especially when the team said they wanted to wait last summer and didn't extend him.

I respect players who show loyalty to an organization. With MM being a Toronto native, I would have hoped there it wouldn't end like this, but with the lack of post season success, there is a ton of pressure.

Tavares turned down a 8x11 million dollar contract in New York. He also turned down even more money from San Jose...and didn't try to twist Torontos arm to give him the same amount San Jose offered.

Tavares is a player who didnt deliver even 70% of his expected contract value. He was grossly overpaid even at 11M and got absurd signing bonuses + sponsership money by coming to Toronto.

If marner has a wild 16M x 7 offer from some team but takes 13.5M x 8 with the leafs he isnt selfless but still chased big time AAV he isnt worth. The team giving 16M (JT 13M) is idiotic and their GM should be auto fired for paying such a grotesque deal to a player entering his 30s soon

SJS was a dumb team that got lucky in not signing Tavares. They burned that luck by going after EK65 and extending him to 11.6M as he got injured and started his decline in late 20s.

Leafs were a dumb team that got f***ed by signing Tavares and seeing him be one of the worst 2Cs in the playoffs for a player making so much money.

Hopefully this time with marner we can be the lucky team that avoids overpaying the guy and he can take his brand to a new team

The two bolded sentences contradict each other. If he’s top 5 why is he taking less then Nurse. Why is he taking less then Nurse anyway with the cap rising.

He has no options. Marner has full NMC. Even with full intentions of not signing in Toronto he can play it out until the end.
